Well, you can't add this to U-Boot. U-Boot can't drive a MIPI display (unless you back-port a lot of thing from kernel to u-boot).
Yes, and that's exactly what we did with the Pandora, for example. Initialize the display - otherwise, you can't show a boot menu where you can choose to boot from multiple sources.
So this should all go to the inird where you can load the panel driver kernel module.
That's too late for a boot menu, as then the kernel has already been loaded.
Unless it's possible to choose a kernel and boot partition AFTER initrd.
