No, it is the VSYS input voltage for efficiency reasons. If we would provide some Palmas voltage to the display inverter, we would loose 5-10% energy.

No, in kernel. U-Boot does no detection at all, except checking for battery presence. So as long as you run in U-Boot console mode there is only the automatic charging detection/handling of the bq24297.
Which kernel version? Already in 4.18 or only in 4.19?
