That doesn't help for being able to specify root=/dev/mmcblk$n on the kernel commandline. Of course then PARTUUIDs get dragged into the conversation even though they're horrible.
(and no I'm not going to be forced into using initramfs for this, it is unnecessary and slows down boot)
Anyway, we're on the same page here why upstream has rejected it, despite users asking for it again and again and again.
