What is the recomended/planned 3g/umts software for pyra, so I can add it to the list of dependencies (or package it up if it isn't in debian) ?

It presents itself as a simple AT modem.
Debian isn’t very good in providing higher level software.
But you can add FSO and ofono stacks. I do not know all the details but they should already come with several modem plug-ins driving the AT commands.
Otherwise it might be an area where someone has to write a better (Pyra specific) user interfaces on top of these middleware packages.
Replicant is quite different. There we will have the gta04-RIL (we could buy one from the manufacturer…) but it is still work in progress.
Finally, it would be interesting to revitalize QtMoko (which already has debian packages): http://qtmoko.sourceforge.net

If it registers as simple modem, can't NetworkManager with the mobile plugin used here?
Works fine with UMTS Sticks on my Pandora and laptops.
That's only for mobile net, not for making phonecalls though.

Yes, I it should work this way. Mainly it needs some AT commands to configure and then a PPP connection is set up.
At least for the data access.
That's only for mobile net, not for making phonecalls though.
And some modem specific higher-level functions.
But we can tap a lot of experience from the OpenMoko, QtMoko, Replicant project.
It is just not upstreamed to the standard distributions.
