We currently have 'libpnd' in one git subdir, but its really an umbrella containing 3 separate projects - a library for pnd-file stuff, a library for pandora specific convenience functions (io, cpu setting, etc), and minimenu.
They're all mashed together since it was convenient during the rush, and more, to avoid creating recipies and risking the firmware build during that crucial time.
Still, we should ultimately split them up, and do so now while we can still get away with it without inconvenience any/many dependany applications. (And who knows, theres the remote possibility some non-Pandora distro will want to leverage pnd-files and not want the pandora baggage, right?)
Strikes me a nice clean break (for HF6, or Yamato-firmware (I coined that right back at Zaxxon naming, but I think ED had another idea for Y as well ;)) and orphaning the existing git subdir and creating 3 new git subdirs is the way to go. Git can certainly handle the removal of many files, or even creating 3 subdirs at its top level and pushing everything down, or working with extreme branches, but it does make for a mess imho. Further, could make it hard if we want to do something such as the new 3-split for Yamato and the origina libpnd for HF6/7/etc while Yamato is in the works. More, conceptually these three really are not related projects, they should be in separate git subdirs.
Hence, my proposal is:
Current: - git.openpandora.org / pandora-libraries.git - leave alone
Proposed: - git.openpandora.org / pandora-libpndfile.git - for pnd-file support, including pndnotifyd - still LGPL - git.openpandora.org / pandora-libpandora.git - for evdev IO and convenience wrappers, and pndevmapperd - still LGPL - git.openpandora.org / pandora-minimenu.git - just minimenu (depends on other two) - still GPL
Alternative: - do it all in place, with proper naming of 'final pre-split'
Then again, I'm more a CVS guy, and theres a billion ways to operate in git, so feel free to mention alternatives and if they'd be pleasant after such a split :)

I'd leave everything in pandora-libraries.git, except minimenu as the libs are closely related and there is not much point building them separately. You could git clone pandora-libraries.git to pandora-minimenu.git and rm what's unneeded from both gits to preserve history.
That's just my take on things, the final decision if of course yours.

I agree with notaz here. While we need to unclutter a bit here and there, things that belong together should be together. Does libpnd make sense without pndevmapperd or other way round? If not, they should stay together.
MiniMenu is different, it could be used for other systems without libpnd. It could also be forked by someone who makes his own version, etc. No need to have libpnd in there.
One thing that should happen though is uncluttering the directories in the GIT themselves. I remember I had a hard time finding the pnd_run.sh-Script in the pandora-libraries-GIT for the first time. test? testdata? What are scripts doing in there?
Okay, the scripts are now moved to the Overlay GIT, but there might be other stuff that needs to be sorted :)

The pnd-file part is conceivably separate to the pandora-specific stuff; you could drop pndnotifyd onto a Touchbook or Meego device and it'd work perfectly fine; however, the pandora device wrappers and pndevmapperd make no sense to those other platforms.
pnd-files are not mature enough to be used anywhere else yet I imagine, but I have heard rumblings here or there, and I actually did port it to work on Atari and a few linuxy gadgets randomly over the last year or two :)
So there really are 3 components, though two of them are more tightly bound.
The reason I bring it up now is.. if there eventually should be a split of the two libpnd parts, better to do it now.
Could keep them in the same git, and just alter the Makefile to spit out two lib's perhaps, so that its half-way there, and future proof.

Its pretty well organized; the scripts (and the minimenu skin) are the two parts that are/were in odd places.
I'll look into it .. when I get a free moment :) Just wanted to post a heads up!
