Here is some information on two games that you might have not heard about.

TrackMania

TrackMania is a racing game, but it is not like the ones where you just race around and do a million laps. It is a game where you have a start and a finish and in order to get there, you have to go through loops, do a wall ride, take and land jumps, get around tough corners, avoid hazards like a barrier or wall, etc... If you have heard of "Stunts" or "Racing Destruction Set", this along with other similar games from that era inspired the developers behind this game to make this one. This game has been around for a few years already and has won six awards in the "Guinness World Records" of 2008. The game includes a track editor that is well developed since you can do things other than just making a custom track like make a screen shake or have some text show when you are at a certain part in the track. It also has multiplayer over the internet where you can play thousands upon thousands of custom made tracks against other people.

There are two versions of the game. One of them is freeware, the other is a paid one.

The freeware version is called: TrackMania: Nations Forever
The paid one is called: TrackMania: United Forever

Both games have a few differences. I'll explain the main ones:

* One is freeware, the other you have to pay for
* Freeware has one environment (Stadium) TMUF has seven in total
* In TMUF, you can TA on the leader boards
* Nations players have no Coppers (In-game currency that can be used to buy player-made skins and tracks among other things)

P.S This game used to have StarForce protection. Ever since TM:NF and TM:UF though, it has been fully removed.

Sonic Robo Blast 2

This is a Sonic fangame that has been around for over 10 years now. It began way back in 1998 using the "Doom Legacy" engine and to this day, it still uses it. This game tries to replicate the classic Sonic game play from the Sega Genesis days as best as it can. This means you have rings, shields, three characters, simple plot, and classic gameplay physics. The game is still in development and recently has made progress towards completion. It has multiplayer modes such as match, race, circuit, and CTF. It also has a community who makes maps, textures, characters, and scripts called "Sonic Object Config" that can do certain things.

Edit: I also forgot to mention that this is an open source game so a developer out there could maintain a PSP port, GP2X port, and possible a Pandora port.

The game has two renders: Software which is the one that is most developed and OpenGL.

I myself am an administrator on the forum, an IRC channel operator of the chatroom and a few months ago, a private beta tester for the team.

More information on SRB2 can be found at these places:

If you guys want to contact me to maybe play TM or something, I am pretty active in the IRC chatroom at: irc.esper.net #srb2fun
My username is what you see here.

So, discuss!

P.S It is possible I forgot some information or I have made an error somewhere.

In case you guys still look at this topic, I updated the SRB2 section about the Open Source part of it since we don't have any official port maintainers other than Windows, Linux, and Mac. I'm sorry if this topic looks like an advertisement. I'm just wondering if people have heard or played these games before. A member from the SRB2 community showed me TM and after trying it out, I love it to death now.

I've heard of TrackMania, but it looks a little bit too unrealistic for my interests.

Getting pretty 'PoisonedV' Lulz, do you like anything? Trackmania isn't meant to be realistic in the slightest, it's mostly a puzzle/platformer (wth cars)

lol, I said a little too unrealistic. I like the idea of driving at ridiculously high speeds through impossible environments, but the tracks aren't ... I dunno.
Also, it looks like it costs money or requires Windows, so I can't be bothered to try it.

Now I have to play TrackMania instead of studying.
:-||

Just played the free version... not bad (5-6 maps, can't remember). There is one where you do this left to right areal jump vertically, car on it's side, flying into all hell. On luck I got the 4 medals on the second attempt (I don't claim skill on nailing that one, map 3 or 4). Either way, kinda cool. No need to worry about shifting, it's a 3d map/race track to explore. Very fun Physics, and an "oh shit" look where I'm flying to and hit what, factor.

Just remember the multiplayer is where the real fun of TrackMania shines when you play against other players. Since having collisions with other cars would happen literally right at the start and everywhere, they are ghost riders instead and because of that, lag online isn't as big of an issue as you would think. I have been in Nations servers where there are about like 120 racers or so and it is hectic and fun. :)

Also, even though there are seven environments in TM:UF, each environment has its own vehicle that performs differently from one another. If you really want speed, the environment called "Island" (Which is in the paid version) really shows how fast you can go.

Sonict, the sonic game looks interesting. you said its open source, but i didnt see any links to it.
What method is being used for the sw rendering?(i.e. SDL) Are there resolution requirements, can it support 320x240 as is?

From an SRB2 dev said:
[14:18:29] <Alam_Lenny> we use DirectDraw 5 for Windows, SDL is used for everything else, but it can also be used for Windows

It is designed for widescreen resolutions so 320x200 should work.

The source code comes with the download and there is an SVN here: svn://code.srb2.org/SRB21094/trunk

I hope that is what you wanted. I don't know many details about programming other than really simple basics.

I wish you best of luck if you decide to do it, Pickle. I have bought a pre-order of the Pandora back in October. I just gotta wait until the damn thing comes out. :D

Got TrackMania Nations... love the game!
I started loving it since I knew it was free! LOL :p

Anyway, just gave it a try and it's very nice, the controls are very simple and still it can be challenging enough to be fun, definitely worth the download. ^_^

I am glad you like it. If my online buddy never showed me TM, I doubt I would have ever played it. I like the "Arcade" style physics, the simple controls, and the large multiplayer community that is filled with maps and skins. If only it was an open source game :p

Unfortunately, AFAIK, WINE only has single player working and multiplayer is what I believe the main attraction of the game. It is still a blast though.

Well did get it working with codeweavers... so Wine should be possible also :)
Online gaming that is ;)

I've got Trackmania Forever (Or was it nations, the one you pay for)

Amazing game. I could spend all day in the map editor.

Depends on how you play the game.

You can play it as a puzzle /platformer or you can play it as a high speed racing game with lots of stunt and a hard difficulty
