Goal: trying to create music out of various sound samples.

Windows sounds
exist in their raw formats, as do Apple sounds (weirdly enough all OSX system sounds exist in the Windows sounds archives).

What I'm looking for are old/new console BIOS/startup/menu sounds (from pretty much any and every console), which seem to be eluding all searches, save for some bad-quality YouTube videos. Other than downloading an emulator and having to grab console ROMS to record oneself, does anyone know of a source that has RAW WAV forms of recorded console sounds, in order to make things much easier?

I've never come across a BIOS that makes a noise, but perhaps I've been lucky. What exactly are you looking for? Linux sounds should be available in the sources somewhere, although I don't seem to have installed them on this system, so I can't tell you where exactly.

i think lnimuk means stuff like the "SEGA" startup noise. are you going to do a mix/song with all of them?

Yes, this is correct. The plan is to remix them into something a little different; there's a certain flow in the noises that would fair well in a mix.

You don't have to do much work to enter "XXX startup sound" to get results.

Here's an example of Megadrive sfx - http://little-scale.blogspot.co.uk/2008/08/sega-mega-drive-sample-pack.html - the download is quite old and I can't test, as I'm at work, but I'm sure Google will yield the sounds you want.

Thanks! Those samples are very short noise but can definitely be used or modified. Google didn't seem to want to point in the correct search orientation, however, it did eventually point to more startup sounds.

There are some sounds on Soundcloud that are available -- and I've personally only come by them by random keyword searches (never what you'd think they'd actually be labelled under).

The guys of pornophonique [1] might be able to help you out. They make/made(?) music using a Game Boy and a C64.
They also released their album "8-bit lagerfeuer" (camp fire) under a CC by-nc-sa license, so you could even sample their music without legal hassle as long as you respect that license.
