Qemu with Win 95 and Win 98

Hi everyone

Just been checking out Qemu. There's something pretty spectacular about seeing old Windows firing up on the Pandora! I followed the configuration and installation instructions in the Wiki as best I could but I just can't find a way to sort these few niggles. I ran the actual installations on Windows under Qemu Manager then transferred the image to the Pandora, hoping that it might solve the few hardware auto-detection issues I noticed.

Anyway I have some quick questions about hardware detection and drivers.

In Windows 98 (SE) I have the following warnings in Device Manager:

- Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo)

- PCI Ethernet

- PCI Bus I have 2 entries, one with a warning the other not

Also the CD/ISO image isn't recognised, I think probably down to the secondary IDE controller above.

In Windows 95 I have the following warnings in Device Manager:

- Cirrus Logic display

- Standard floppy disk controller

- Plug & play BIOS

And also I've noticed that touchscreen is offset from the corresponding mouse pointer in emulation.

Anyone else noticed these and found a fix for any of them?

It's been a long time since I've had to deal with all the old Windows driver problems.

Cheers, B

Don't set the CD in the qemu gui. Instead, after windows has booted, press Alt+F2 to get to the qemu console. Then type change ide1-cd0 /the/path/to/your/iso. Finally press Alt+F1 to get back to windows.

Or second Solution: install a MSDOS CDROM Driver who loads before Windows starts ^_^

You can use the Touchscreen right when you type in additional Options

-usb -usbdevice tablet

With Windows 98 have you now Touchscreen support but the USB Emulation slows Qemu a bit down.

Windows95 have no USB HID Support,i experimented with Win95 and USB but no working Results.

Maybe you find a Dos Solution for USB HID ,but my experiments there had no good Results too.

Seems that you need for Windows95 a other Grafic Card Driver, see in the Pandora Qemu Wiki, this one work fine.

Under Windows95 change please the Plug&Play manualy to PCI Bus,mioment i search a Link how explained:

The Same Plug&Play Bios Problem must be done with Windows98 Normaly.

The IDE Controller Issues are relative often and i see them as "normal" :D

Hope i helped you

Here Are Threads with many helpfull Informations:

The DOS cd driver doesn't support files in the iso with more than 8 characters in the name.

Wow i did not know thatcher,i must try it this evening with my images.is that cd dos driver realy so bad?i never rekognized that under windows on qemu.

Well since dos before Win9x long file names doesnt support more than 8.3 filenames and the DOS CDROM driver is propably older than win9x and ISO9660 provides 8.3 names by default - without any extensions - the long file names are an extension called Joliet (for windows, linux has also rock ridge with unix features)... So I'm not surprised it doesnt support more than 8.3 filenames.

Can I actually install Win 98 on the Pandora, or do I have to do it on another computer and copy the .qcow2 file over to the Pandora? Because I can't seem to get it to install. The first time it hung at 87% of the first part of the GUI part of the setup, and the second time it gave two General Protection Faults at about the same spot.

EDIT: Tried it again. It got to 100% this time before it froze.

Hi,here can you download a Qemu Manager for Windows who use Qemu 0.1.41 and

with this can you easily make Images for Qemu under Windows.

I use that nearly ever when i build Qcow2 Images for the Pandora.

http://mcobit.openpandora.org/Win95Tools&Drivers/QemuManager.rar

When you download the normal Qemu Manager is the Qemu Version too old,

but my Version should work very easy for you.

Just install the Freeware Qemu Manager and overwrite the Directory with my Files ;)

I'm having issues with the Qemu Manager. The latest downloadable version is 7.0. For some reason, version management doesn't work so I was unable to install 0.141 version. Then, I have used the archived copy of Qemu 0.141 provided from the link above and everything seemed OK at first. Manager works, I was able to create and configure new image, however every time I tried to start an image, error message pops up "Unable to launch Qemu!". Could you please specify which freeware Qemu Manger version you are using? Thanks.
