Problem with the USB

Hi Patrick. The OpenPandora`s normal sized USB port is USB 2.0 only, whereas your USB keyboard, like most keyboards and mice, are USB 1 only. To use your external USB keyboard and any other USB 1 devices you will have to use a USB 2.0 Hub for them. Plug the Keyboard, etc into the hub, then plug the hub into the Pandora`s USB 2.0 port. You may want to search a bit more, or wait for one of the more experienced members who could better verify/correct on what I said. There is a reason for it being this way but I cannot remember why at this time. I think this info may be also on the OpenPandora wiki.

Most recently manufactured USB 2.0 devices like thumb/flash drives, WiFi adapters usually are detected easily ( though there may be exceptions, but they are rare.)

...Patnik.

Ressults are the same on the big 2.0 usb and small 1.0 usb of the pandora. No keyboards and no mouses can work on the usb1 nor usb2.0

I have tried with a :

- usb harddisk , brand new, : wd my passport

I get this error, and on the board they say that it is an hardware problem likely

http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=266084

- I have plugged a Hama Port x 7  in between

www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKPtUy5vreY

and on it the devices:   harddisk, keyboards, and nothing works

lsusb does not see the 2.0 hub even :)

- Lenovo keyboard model ku-0906a not working

- The only thing that works is my flash pendrive 2gb

Is the Pandora to be returned to be repaired or to get a working one? I have no idea what to do with this machine if USB is not working. It does not make much senses to have a portable PC if the usb hardware is damaged or not compatible with Linux. Though my USB 2.0 hama hub x7 is really working on any PC that I have (Debian based) except the Pandora.

I have lost all hopes to have this working, since I have tried what is recommended (usb 2.0,,...)

Do USB thingies work using standard firmware and activating USB host functionality?

If you have used a USB device directly on the Pandora and it's not working I think you have to pull the battery for a few minutes before trying with the USB hub.

Ah your using the smaller otg port.. have you looked at the other thread on this? Have you tried the using the command that Notaz suggest before using on devices?

It's usually enough to "sudo modprobe g_cdc" in the terminal, then plugging the OTG adapted with mouse connected to it, unplugigng adapter, then plugging again. This procedure is needed due to driver bugs mostly..
Also, when using your USB2.0 hub try plugging in the devices into the hub before plugging the hub into the Pandora, some hubs if empty will crash the USB 2.0 driver for some reason and only a full restart will fix it(Or the command I can't seem to remember).

If you have used a USB device directly on the Pandora and it's not working I think you have to pull the battery for a few minutes before trying with the USB hub.
^You don't need to pull the battery a full restart is all that is in order.. in fact if you can memorize a command you enter into a terminal there is something to restart it.. I just need to find the command.

That is the first thing, isn't it? Have you enabled "USB Host" in the settings?

Patrick, did you have the HAMA hub powered with its own power adapter when you connected it to your Pandora? Try this: power adapter to HAMA hub, keyboard etc into hub, then attach HAMA hub to your Pandora with USB Host "Enabled."

Do you have a friend/acquaintance with a different USB 2.0 Multi-hub that you could borrow to see if there is a better result?

Also, see this link: http://pandorawiki.org/USB_compatibility_list ( Section 8 has a list of tested USB hubs by other members. If you could get yours to work on your OpenPandora, then you could add that info too).

I hope this helps you. I don`t think your Pandora`s USB ports are defective. Since your flash/thumb drive was detected properly.

  • Ignore the miniUSB port for the moment - it can be fiddly
  • Does your device require fast data transmition (e.g. pen drives, wifi adaptors)? If so, skip to step 4
  • Find a USB hub (preferably one with its own power adaptor)
  • Does your device require lots of electrical power? (main culprits are things with motors and moving parts,  including harddisks) If not, skip to step 6
  • Ensure you are connecting your device through a powered hub (with power adaptor in place) (the pandoras main port, like most devices can supply up to 500mA)
  • Plug your device into your hub, THEN your hub into your pandora
  • With your device plugged in, select 'enable USB host' - this is normally in a menu accessible from an icon in the pandora's panel.
  • Does it work? If so skip to step 11
  • Check pandora-specific and general-linux compatibility lists for your USB device - google is your friend (also have a look at the pandora wiki)
  • Report back here with details of what your did, what happened and what didn't.
  • Have a mug/glass of your favourite beverage :)
Note: It may be advisable to restart your pandora before starting to follow these steps, as it is possible to temporarily break the software controlling the USB by plugging in an empty hub, or by attempting to use a USB1.0/1.1 device in the main socket.

OK. I have bought a very expensive new hub which has a power supply.

So I jump to here since I would like to read a western digital my passport

  • Plug your device into your hub, THEN your hub into your pandora
  • With your device plugged in, select 'enable USB host' - this is normally in a menu accessible from an icon in the pandora's panel.

I do not so much the interests if you travel and you cannot count on your USB port.

I went to travel with my Zaurus, and I can use keyboards, and so on .

let s try

Support not working unfortunately. Here please find the results from the TESTS of the Open Pandora.

Well, this is one of the reason why it is better not to buy an Open source hardware.

So the results, in image, shows that the kernel does not like the USB 1.x or USB 2.0 ports of the OpenPandora. It is not working with the 3.2.x kernel (the default one that has been delivered with, I bought it 2 weeks ago).

Even with my PIM zaurus, it works ;) Sharp really made a great machine at that time. My PIM has even a very old kernel.

Zaurus Kernel :

   Linux Zaurus 2.4.20 #1 Mon 22 aug 2005 armv5tel unknown

Status => all USB devices working flawlessly.

Open Pandora

    Linux pandora 3.2.30 #699 Tue Oct 16 armv71

   Status => no comments.

Honestly never had ANY issues getting any variety of Keyboard or Mice to work on either of my Pandora(s). This issue seems to stem from a software or hardware issue with your unit..

I'd try a reflash (after backing up your files) and then sending it back for repairs.

I've never had this sort of problem, and it is extremely rare - You seem to be very unlucky :(

Is that a Classic, Rebirth or 1GHz Pandora?

The Rebirth and 1GHz one have all been fully tested (which includes both USB Ports) whereas older Classic one haven't.

I have this same issue as well with a classic pandora.

The hub and mouse etc. all worked before.  I have boot into old kernal to get a working mouse.

I have Super zaxxon1.52

So I know it's not hardware.

Correction Edit:  I finally got it but toggle usb wouldn't work for me.  I had to go into startup and set it to enable on startup it seems.  Will try a couple other things.

Correection 2:  Please power (shutdown).  Then boot it back up.  If you don't have usb enabled on startup, ensure you toggle usb host first before plugging anything into usb port.  If you startup usb first then plugin it shoud work.

Final Edit: Never mind all the above.  I got and have no clue why I couldn't get it to work before but now seems fine.

The answer to this needs to be a permanent page. This question will come up continuously.

Also, please don't use "USB 2.0" when you mean "USB high speed", or "USB 1.0" when you mean "USB Full Speed", there is not a direct correlation! A USB 2.0 device can be USB High Speed, USB Full Speed, or USB Low Speed.

On the big USB connector, (USB A), it provides 500 mA and only supports USB High Speed. (This port is connected to a port on the processor that was designed to be hard wired to a hub).

On the Small USB connector (USB On The Go mini-AB a depreciated connector type), it provides 100 mA, and can support USB Low Speed, USB Full Speed, and USB High Speed. This port can be used to charge the Pandora, it can also be used to connect the Pandora to another computer.

An unpowered USB hub can support 2 ports at 100 mA each.

A powered USB hub can support up to 7 ports at 500 mA each.

I won't go into USB 3.0 since the Pandora does not support USB Ultra Speed.

Still on testing

I have done more testing.

1) I remove battery

2) I waited long enough eg one day

3) I removed all sd

4) booted angstrom

) plug a keyboard apple ´on the mini usb

) nothing work

) pluged even detection via lsusb

) pluged all usb devices: nothing work on mini usb

-) took another little hub of brand ISY (blue led)

-) I put that keyboard on the USB 2.0 regular via the hub mini IPY

) finally LSUSB gave me the new usb device apple

) I plug another thing : RJ45 internet not working

) it seems that usb 2.0 does like only a single usb device

) if more than 1 usb device, then, lsusb does NOT EVEN list it

(maybe power protection, actually it is strange)

It menas hte the mini USB DOES NOT WORK AT ALL  ( I dont know what for you put that since you could have saved some space

to make a decent usb one)

then, thats not all abou tthis testing.

because on debian the lsusb did not work at all

so I thought I did not installed well debian. so I took this http://www.stuckiegamez.co.uk/apps/pandora/Debian/pandora-squeeze-1.0.5-grip.tar.bz2

so then I boot

nothing, black

so, ok. I use the uImage-3 (3.2.20 kernel of angstrom)

I copy the libs into /libs/modules

I remove gdm since I konw allready that gdm witll crash the box

Here we got the virtual console of hte debian co.uk !!

Is this install better than mine? -does the USB work this time?

Since it is on the wiki, the guy might have it

- no, lsusb does the same thing as my installatino of debian

to enable usb, I used the usb gadget of course

(with does sothg like modprobe g_cdc)

btw keyboards keymap of hte virutal keyboard still sucks  under debian :(   | is missing e.g.

so question:

I need another kernel for the Pandora with better support of USB  + that is compatible with the pandora usb

+ I need a Keyboard

+ I need good support for Mices and Keyboards

The angstrom regular with its kernel does not like any of my usb external Keyboards (lenovo regular keyboard, apple keyboard, microsoft keyboard multimedia). The guy that did do  compiling of hte kernel forgot:

- keyboards  (my apple keyboard would a great thing to have becuase to type on the openpandora is pain. The key press is much much too hard comparison with my Zaurus)

- he might have forgotten more

- good usb support

...

Can I install the Linux image of the ARM from DEBIAN Squeeze ?? I know that it is for arm5 if I recall well.

I will be sure that at least that with a debian kernel that I have all modules, all necessary to go on travel !!

I would like to have this box to work like my Zaurus, and even better. With my Zaurus, I can travel and rely on bluetooh, wifi, and Debian. - And USBs of course. And this with a 2.4.x kernel..

Small correction, it maybe does not work at all on your device. To further investigate that matter:

- do you have another cable to connect it to the OTG Port ? There are several reports on the boards that not all cables work.

- did you try connecting the Pandora to a host via the OTG Port ? If so does the Pandora start charging after you plugged it in ? Does mass storage mode work ?

Please do these test using the stock firmware to eliminate possible problems with your Pandebian installation.

Regarding the ARM build of Debian squeeze: There is a high possiblity that I mix things up here, but afaik Yes, but the sgx driver won't work as Debian ARm is built with Hardfloat support while there is only a SGX driver with softloat support available right now => see here.
