MAME + Nubs = Good?

How well do the nubs work by default in the Pandora's versions of MAME? Are they too sensitive, do they respond well, etc. Same for N64, too.

Well, I'm not sure about the first version of mame released, but the Mame4all that SteveM ported does not support the nubs yet. He was working on it, and then he vanished. But the work he did in 1 month is some of the best, and Mame4all is reason enough to own a Pandora.

I actually broke my nub playing Banjo & Kazoie on the N64 emu. It works well(a little sensitive though), but I never played with the settings, as it seemed to complex for me to follow, but once that emu get further along, and they make a decent front end with menu options, it should be improved and make it easier to calibrate within the menu.

No nub support? D: Well, can someone else add it in? Is the source code available?

Well in the first Mame version for Pandora mame.106 or mame2x.106 the controls default to the d-pad for movement (possibly left nub aswell but mine is bust now so cant confirm) and the right nub as left and right mouse buttons, to L and R of the sticks movement. The firing like that is not very convenient or wise, with the older nubs. Remapping via TAB was always required and sadly it did not save these settings, so things had to be remapped every time per game. It did work well however.

Mame4all is as described above but for many titles I wanted, it seemed to have very bad sound, so I stuck to the former. For other games great but no nub support.

This will no doubt change when many Pandoras are out there and demand and praise is worth the time to the people involved.

Most likely I'll only use the left nub for games with analog controls (like racing games). The right one I'm not terribly concerned about; dual joystick games like Robotron or Smash TV can have the face buttons. And if I understand you correctly, control remaps save, but you have to remap them once per game? Or do you have to do it every time you want to play?

Not too interested in the racing games - not sure they'll work too well on the nub/pandora (anyone want to comment on the performance of outrun and later classics?!)

But what about trackball emulation using the nub? :p

Centipede / Marble Madness / Missile Command / Crystal Castles / etc.. - these might be stunning if the nub was calibrated right

Please shoot me, for how could I possibly forget such classics!

Sorry for my dumb English (its my first language)but sadly they dont save after exiting the game, so yes you have to remap every time with Mame.106 (unless I've missed updates). I think Mame4all saves though. Will check, plus see if I have the games your mentioning and how they run.

edit : I can get everything except crystal castles running on one or other of the emus but Chase HQ needed 1ghz to get to proper speed and get rid of audio stutter and slowdown in Mame.106. Probably an issue with my romset though (v77) as the games I wanted ran, so I haven't bothered to update or downgrade to .106 yet.

So, although you have to (ahem) overclock a little, Chase HQ works with the nubs? You can't see, but I'm doing my so so happy dance :D

Mame106 has nub support (R at least, my left is bust) but Mame4All doesnt yet. So I cant confirm if the driving itself is L nub possible and yes I was surprised by how much OC was needed to get it to proper speed and sounding right. Was fun catching the first criminal though and I loved this game on the Amstrad, which also plays well but looks like loveable nostalgic crap in comparison!

The dance? Oh I can picture it perfectly now theres a couple more Pandas out there...

edit: ROMz WAREz etc arent topics for discussion by linkage I believe but I got an old set from a MameBurner, rather than other means. You then need ClrMame to audit and recompile the set to a version you want for a given emu. Of course its still not legit unless have a warehouse the size of Manchester with every arcade PCB stored to match the set. I've applied for planning permission to level Blackpool for this purpose and use the tower as a spotting station for that game I'd forgotten amidst them all but no luck as yet!

You missed an update. ;) There's a second, later, version of the MAME 0.106 PND which does save your control mappings and other settings upon exit. (That's the one I use.)
