The game of "Mastermind" using four-letter words instead of colors. :)

Click here to download from the GP2x.de archives

The game was programmed using the excellent GLBasic (see GLBasic's website). It includes most common four-letter words in the English language...although a few choice words were removed to keep a PG rating.

Compatible with both F100 & F200 versions of the GP2X.

It includes instructions on how to use your own word list instead of the built-in one. So it's quite easy to use nothing but dirty four-letter words, if one were so inclined!

lol...

Anyways, nice work! Looks like a cross between hangman and mastermind - two of my all time favorite time wasters! I'll check this out.

Indeed! Downloading now. Thanks 32Me. :)
[update]

Great game! I'll be getting some mileage out of this one. Excellent interpretation of the Mastermind concept, and very nice graphics/animations. A few suggestions though:

- The button configuration is a little uncomfortable. It would be more intuitive if it worked like Reword, ie "B" to select a letter and "X" to submit your guess (in other words, X permanently mapped to the Enter key).

- Ideally "B" would be the default selection button in the menu as well, just for consistency.

- Item selection in the menu should trigger a sound, to confirm that your selection has registered. Perhaps just the same "sshp" sound you hear when you first hit Select. I found that the slight delay when exiting, while not a problem in itself, was offputting because I wasn't sure I'd hit the key.

Hope some of that is of use. :)

Ha! That actually occurred to me too, after I had uploaded the image! I guess that says more about me than I intended. :p

Good suggestions! I intended to go back at some point and add touchscreen support too, so I'll probably make these fixes when I do.

In the meantime, here's a quick half-fix for the controls: look in the main directory for a "settings.txt" file. Open it, and change the "select button" number from 28 to 45. This is the code for the B button.

It would be more useful to include other Languages for users from non-english speaking Countries. :) I find this kind of game pretty hard and with words in a foreign Language it's not more easy. ^_^

A foreign language list of words can be used by the game, instructions are included on how to do that. But only speaking English, I wouldn't be the best person to gather the list.

However, the virtual keyboard is currently fixed with the English language. So if, say, you wanted to use a list of German words, you wouldn't be able to use umlauts or the esset.

I love the look of the game, but I have two problems.

The use of the start/home key for letter selection is very awkward. Using select as it is is on the OK side of tolerable, but I've gotten the impression that start/select should only be used for menu selection and quitting the application

On my first round playing, I found an error. The answer word BARF gave me an incorrect answer on a guess (three dots instead of two) on a guess of HEAR (or some similar word, unfortunately I was just about to fall asleep). I'd be happy to playtest and attempt to replicate. I know my two previous guesses were both one blue one yellow. I'd previously guessed HEAR which correctly gave three yellow.

It looks very well polished. I look forward to having it as part of my collection!

Hmm...I checked the game, recreating the answer word BARF. A guess of HEAR gave me two yellow pegs, which is correct. If you encounter the issue again, please let me know exactly what word you entered, what pegs you received, and what the actual word was.

I should point out that the game analyzes each letter you enter individually, not as a whole as I believe Mastermind does. For instance, if the word was BARF and you entered RRRR, then you would receive one blue peg and three yellow pegs! This is because the first, second, and fourth R are technically correct letters but in incorrect places.

BTW...if you want to change the letter selection key to "B" instead of "START," look in the main game directory for a "settings.txt" file. Open it, and change the "select button" number from 28 to 45. This is the code for the B button.

It's very possible that this was it. I'd argue that this was incorrect behaviour (Mastermind doesn't work this way). I'll watch closely and record any future issues. (I apologize for not running to the computer and recording all the data... I was drop dead tired and had to collapse after playing it.)

Ha! No worries! :)

I may change the rules to those of Mastermind in the future. For now, this was kind of a quick-programming deal, so I guess I was a bit lazy about the rules I chose. ;)

I think I've found my review quote:
"Lexeme... I was drop dead tired and had to collapse after playing it." - Trevor Bradley

Great game... very fun and polished. :)

As mentioned already, the button mappings do need some work. I think adding button mappings for "Enter" & "Backspace" would be great, and maybe mapping them to A & X respectively.

Adding touchscreen support would also be nice. ;)

The volume buttons doesn't do anything (aside from quitting the game when pressed simultaneously)... not really a big a deal.

Thank you for this fun game. :D
