Lexar UHS-I 400X 128GB SDXC and a 256GB Pandora

I just got the UHS-I card and am opening this thread to place benchmark results in as I generate them. As with the (Lexar 133x 128GB SDXC) card, I'll be doing some tests beyond what will eventually show up in the SD card compatibility list.

At the moment I have both cards in my Pandora - 256GB. OK, so it's kind of silly.

More to come on this one.

To do this I needed write and read benchmarks. So I used the ones that MrRob developed in another thread.

Cards used in testing:

133X is http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/756124-REG/Lexar_LSD128CRBNA133_128GB_Professional_SDXC_Card.html

400x is http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/841484-REG/Lexar_LSD128CTBNA400_128GB_SDXC_Memory_Card.html

Price difference is $12. I needed another 128GB card for a camera and thought I'd benchmark it. The UHS-I card isn't staying in my Pandora.

Each card is formatted with a single 120GB ext2 partition. My Pandora is clocked at 800Mhz.

Write benchmark: dd if=/dev/zero of=/media/sdcardname/file.img bs=1024k count=500

Card, slot, iteration, result.

Lexar 133X 128GB SDXC card, left slot, i1, 524288000 bytes (524 MB) copied, 57.9436 s, 9.0 MB/s

Lexar 133X 128GB SDXC card, left slot, i2, 524288000 bytes (524 MB) copied, 56.0055 s, 9.4 MB/s

Lexar 133X 128GB SDXC card, left slot, i3, 524288000 bytes (524 MB) copied, 55.5187 s, 9.4 MB/s

Lexar 400X 128GB UHS-I card, right slot, i1, 524288000 bytes (524 MB) copied, 57.7025 s, 9.1 MB/s

Lexar 400X 128GB UHS-I card, right slot, i2, 524288000 bytes (524 MB) copied, 56.4106 s, 9.3 MB/s

Lexar 400X 128GB UHS-I card, right slot, i3, 524288000 bytes (524 MB) copied, 60.5005 s, 8.7 MB/s

Lexar 400X 128GB UHS-I card, right slot, i4, 524288000 bytes (524 MB) copied, 61.3672 s, 8.5 MB/s

Lexar 400X 128GB UHS-I card, right slot, i3, 524288000 bytes (524 MB) copied, 60.4797 s, 8.7 MB/s

An odd thing happened during the write benchmarks - the UHS-I card appeared to be steadily getting slower. So I kept benching it to see where it would bottom out. It does have more variability in write speed than the regular SDXC card.

Read benchmark: dd if=/media/sdcardname/file.img of=/dev/null

Card, slot, iteration, result.

Lexar 133X 128GB SDXC card, left slot, i1, 524288000 bytes (524 MB) copied, 30.501 s, 17.2 MB/s

Lexar 133X 128GB SDXC card, left slot, i2, 524288000 bytes (524 MB) copied, 30.4598 s, 17.2 MB/s

Lexar 133X 128GB SDXC card, left slot, i3, 524288000 bytes (524 MB) copied, 30.5322 s, 17.2 MB/s

Lexar 400X 128GB UHS-I card, right slot, i1, 524288000 bytes (524 MB) copied, 30.2341 s, 17.3 MB/s

Lexar 400X 128GB UHS-I card, right slot, i2, 524288000 bytes (524 MB) copied, 30.2754 s, 17.3 MB/s

Lexar 400X 128GB UHS-I card, right slot, i3, 524288000 bytes (524 MB) copied, 30.2666 s, 17.3 MB/s

Findings:

Both of these cards are fast and have 128GB capacities, but from the perspective of the Pandora - there isn't any real difference in performance. If you're planning to use a card exclusively in your Pandora, there isn't anything to gain by spending the extra $12.

It's the way of the future.

I agree.

This does bring out an important point for future device development though. The SDXC card slots need to be ready for very very fast reading cards. With the direction things are going, SD card read speeds should crack the 100MB/sec space soon.

According to the manufacturer, that 400X UHS-I card is capable of reading at 60MB/sec. There are also 600X cards on the market as well - so 90MB/sec.

Of course the Pandora isn't going to hit those types of read speeds. The main thing to take a way from my testing is that both cards work in the Pandora and that from a Pandora owner's perspective, either is just as functional as the other.

Somewhat freaky... When I input "Lexar UHS-I" into google, this article pops at the top. Higher than the manufacturer's website.

Not really - you're being bubbled <_< :p

Can't even find this page when searching using DDG ("openpan" does not occur in the first several pages groups/batches of results)

I get it when searching "Lexar UHS-I" but not as the first result.

256GB in your hands. Can't ask for anymore than that. :)

Put two SD or SDHC or SDXC cards in the palm of your hand.

Now tell yourself that is a quarter terabyte.

Feels kind of unreal.

The 133X read version of the Lexar card is now $89.

As above testing shows - as far as I can tell, on the Pandora the rated speed difference doesn't translate to differences on our device.

I just ordered a 2nd one of these - and will keep my Pandora at 256GB now. The other card gets dedicated camera work as my Pentax Optio W-2 only seems to like ExFAT on these larger cards.

The way these are dropping in price though - I have to wonder if 256GB cards are nearer on the horizon.

Wow, that's a great price, thanks for sharing, just picked one up.

I've started noticing the bottom falling out of 64GB cards on NewEgg, but mainly for Class X generics.

Yeah - it shocked me a bit to see these down there. Upper end name branded 128GB card for $89 seems cheap - especially considering I have spent over $400 combined for my other two 128GB Lexar cards.

It makes me wonder what is in the pipeline.

I've been working with PreTec for better pricing, but its just unrealistic what they want on an order placed today vs. two months ago. They aren't being competitive at all considering the sky is falling around them.

Perhaps I should send them the link and see what kind of reaction that garners.

1 terabyte cards, not immediately though, they will sell them in levels. There's been recent advances in 'density' technology so they can fit more cells in the same space.

Go America! In this regard atleast. Your president's pretty cool too.

do you really want to receive rebranded lexar cards for ten dollars more?

Just wanted to post that these sold out at the $89 price point. Looks like the price on those was because it was a closeout. Good deal while it lasted, although the current price on the 400X (still Class 10?) is fairly priced compared to other 128GB cards.
