Back in the late 80s, early 90s I used to be obsessed with piling 10p pieces in to Double Dragon in the arcades.

I remember it being absolutely amazing to play. I even had the crappy Master system conversion and used to play it in two player for hours.

Replaying these games now - they are absolutely horrible. I cannot get over how SLOW the arcade version is. It's just boring repetitive hell.

My childhood memories are forever tainted. Young me, you were an idiot, give me back all my 10p's.

Which games don't stand up to the test of time for you?

Super Mario Bros 3 : had so much difficulty beating the world 8 levels when I was young, used to find some super leafs or ''Pot'' as I used to name them.

Now, they look easy as hell.

Sad but true, so much hours passed with that damn nes !

Streetfighter 2 on the amiga.I played loads of it.I even convinced myself it was a good port. It's quite poor and lacks the gameplay of the arcade version.Oh and back to the future 2 on the amiga.I played it alot. The graphics are poor. The gameplay is piecemeal and frustrating.Only the bttf theme tune saves it.

I remember completing Double Dragon 3 on the Amiga, I pumped hours into it and I must have enjoyed it but I tried to play it recently and it is disgusting, it is a smelly bag of badly drawn turds, if a gun was placed to my head and I was told to spend as long as it takes to complete the game again I would have to take a few minutes to mull it over.

Luckily my favourite game of all time, Chaos by Julian Gallop, is still as good as it ever was and I always enjoy a few rounds, you can get it on the Android market too.

Generally I find that watching youtube playthroughs are the best way to enjoy the unplayable games, somebody else gets to experience the pain and I can just watch like the Marquis De Sade.

Likewise Double Dragon took way too much of my pocket money. Space Harrier should be added to the list, ridiculously popular at the time yet utterly crap to play now.

On the other hand, the original Star Wars arcade game - despite the graphics - is still quite enjoyable to fire up in MAME for a quick session every now and then :)

Shenmue 1 & 2. Twas awesome back in the day, but now it seems overly dated and hasn't aged well, particularly when you compare it to the likes of Fallout 3, etc.
LOL? Why would you even start to compare it to that? Or is my sarcasm detector broken? ShenMue is a friggin' milestone. 'Nuff said.

The majority of the Atari 2600 games I played when I was young.. man they were awesome back in the day.. but just being able to move something on a TV screen and have it make sounds was pretty spectacular back then. It doesn't hold up too well today though...

You gotta love that music though! The final showdown music with Willy is still EPIC!

Well this was probably the main cause of my emaciated state at school:

after playing again recently, I just couldn't muster any enthusiasm/joy whatsoever (admittedly, it isn't quite the same without the periscope/viewfinder contraption) ..don't know if it's simply down to me being a cantankerous old git these days or the game really is pretty dreadful.. the jury's out!

I had much the same feelings on a real machine a couple of years back - it's really poor now. This was one of my faves as a teen :(

Another arcade that I loved at the time - Dragon's Lair. It really is awful now. It still looks and sounds great, but there's more gameplay in licking a stamp.

On the other side of the coin... Back in the day I used to think Tempest was just so-so but now I love it!

Hm... all the earliest non-educational-type games I played (Lode Runner: The Legend Returns, King's Quest VI, The Even More Incredible Machine, Super Mario All-Stars, F-Zero, Tetris Attack) were fun then and are still fun now, and I don't notice any blemishes in hindsight. The educational games I played (JumpStart games and Reading Journey come to mind) were usually just "OK" to begin with.

For the GBA and Gamecube (the oldest dedicated game consoles I have ever owned while the games were current), all of them were either great from the beginning or shit from the beginning, or somewhere in between. No change in perception at this point. I suppose Super Mario Sunshine isn't fun to play any more, but that's because it has no replay value; everything about it holds up well, I think.

So... well, I suppose the closest fit for me is this piece of crap I made a few years ago. But that's kind of cheating because it was my personal bias telling me it was teh most awesomest game evar.

Of course, I do look back at old games from before my time and say that they suck today, but I don't know personally if they were the best when they were released. In particular, Space Invaders, and just about any Atari 2600 game (including the revered Yar's Revenge). They're just too simple, repetitive, and boring. And the Atari 2600 has awful sound. Spacewar! (the original) is also something that definitely doesn't hold up well, mostly because of the incredibly slow and difficult physics and the bizarre design choice of causing the sun to teleport a ship to the bottom-right corner of the screen.

Double dragon stinks :) . I barely got it back in the day, just didnt' seem all that fun even then.. but once I got the arcade board for my basement... rubbish! AD&D Tower of Doom and King of Dragons are great beatemups :)
