... yeah, so I was testing out the latest MAME for a few minutes and here he comes, "Hey ... is that a new kind of PSP?" I groaned on the inside, bit my lip and politely explained, "No, it's a home-brew console made in S. Korea .. only available on the 'net. You can't find them in the stores" I was trying to make him go away, because I knew he has little PC knowledge, but he kept attacking me;
"Is it better than the PSP?"
"Well, for me it is ... it plays all my favorite old-school consoles and several hundred arcade games; here, lemme show you:" I then exited out to Gmenu's main screen and showed him all the icons for the consoles we have emulated. Big mistake.
"ohh, that looks cool ... it has Atari! I haven't played Atari since I was a kid! How much does it cost?"
"Well, ~$200, more or less"
"Is it hard to set up? If I got one, could you hook me up with all the games and shit? I'm not too good with computers and stuff..."
Now here folks, I faced a terrible moral crossroads. On the one hand, I wanted to initiate a newbie into the wonderful world of classic emulation and fantastic homebrew ... but the bastard inside me thought of every time this same n00b wouldn't be able to get some game to run, or how to install roms or even worse, where to get some ... I had to think fast, so as not to appear like a totally selfish jerk, then it came to me;
"Well, how well versed are you with Linux?"
"WHa?"
"Linux, you know, the operating system. You DO know this thing uses Linux as its core OS, don't you?"
At this point I could see the light starting to dim in his eyes; "Yeah, you need to use bash scripts to run the applications. You can find some guides on the 'net about it, or get one of those 'dummies' books ..."
"Nah, that looks too complicated for me ... maybe I'll get that new Nintendo Light I saw at the mall the other day. thanks anyway"
Disaster averted.
</bastard>
*note to anyone actually considering getting one ... you don't need to learn scripts to use most of the stuff for the '2X ... it was a ruse to make this guy go away *
