... yeah, so I was testing out the latest MAME for a few minutes and here he comes, "Hey ... is that a new kind of PSP?" I groaned on the inside, bit my lip and politely explained, "No, it's a home-brew console made in S. Korea .. only available on the 'net. You can't find them in the stores" I was trying to make him go away, because I knew he has little PC knowledge, but he kept attacking me;

"Is it better than the PSP?"

"Well, for me it is ... it plays all my favorite old-school consoles and several hundred arcade games; here, lemme show you:" I then exited out to Gmenu's main screen and showed him all the icons for the consoles we have emulated. Big mistake.

"ohh, that looks cool ... it has Atari! I haven't played Atari since I was a kid! How much does it cost?"

"Well, ~$200, more or less"

"Is it hard to set up? If I got one, could you hook me up with all the games and shit? I'm not too good with computers and stuff..."

Now here folks, I faced a terrible moral crossroads. On the one hand, I wanted to initiate a newbie into the wonderful world of classic emulation and fantastic homebrew ... but the bastard inside me thought of every time this same n00b wouldn't be able to get some game to run, or how to install roms or even worse, where to get some ... I had to think fast, so as not to appear like a totally selfish jerk, then it came to me;

"Well, how well versed are you with Linux?"

"WHa?"

"Linux, you know, the operating system. You DO know this thing uses Linux as its core OS, don't you?"

At this point I could see the light starting to dim in his eyes; "Yeah, you need to use bash scripts to run the applications. You can find some guides on the 'net about it, or get one of those 'dummies' books ..."

"Nah, that looks too complicated for me ... maybe I'll get that new Nintendo Light I saw at the mall the other day. thanks anyway"

Disaster averted. :p

</bastard>

*note to anyone actually considering getting one ... you don't need to learn scripts to use most of the stuff for the '2X ... it was a ruse to make this guy go away *

You...you traitor. How could you? For all the things that the gp2x did for you, is this what you give back in return!?

:D Just kidding! I hope he has fun with his new ds lite!

It's ok, I talk people out of buying it too - if they sound like they would just end up sending it back saying it does not work i'll tell them not to bother buying it.

Once the firmware matures a bit more and things become more complete thing should get easier for people. It's been a year now, but I think we are getting there.

Well hey, look on the bright side:
At least the guy was genuinly interested instead of dismissing it off-hand as a stupid gimmick, or worse a "subpar nintendo wanna-be" as most of my friends have. No matter how hard i try...

Well the GP2X is still alot easier to get HB running on than a "Nintendo lite" or a "Sony handheld playstation".

I don't know how you could dummy it up more than it is unless you make all emu and HB game makers follow strict standards that would mostly annoy the rest of us. Most of us here like to place things where we want and structure it the way we like. If some "mature FW" means doing things it's own way and taking away the customizability, then no thanks.

My friends are exactly the same. Except they know I love it, and they hate it even more just to piss me off. They look like idiots calling it the "Shit2X"......

1. Is that a friend of yours? How did you assume he had no computer knowledge right from the start? Just because he doesn't know what a GP2X is?

2. Waste of time asking if he knew that the GP2X has linux. No sense in that.

3. Instead of averting potential newbie customers and keeping the GP2X all to yourself, why not mention that there are online guides to help newbies start out with the GP2X. Oh wait, there is none. Why not?

4. GP2X must be too complicated in general. With the GP32, there are no scripts or hacks to %$*& around with.

I think you are the one pissing them off. Lay off with the GP2X love, how about. Try to treat it as something casual instead of your prized possession. Maybe they wouldn't piss you off like that if you stop boasting about the GP2X's various features to them, or calling them every time you complete a level in [insert MAME game here] since you, like many other people in this forum that loves the GP2X, are emulator addicts that buy 16 separate 1 GB sd cards to store every single rom (bad dumps included) of 16 systems on them. Then they seclude themselves from the world by plugging in noise-cancelling earphones into the headphone jack, WHICH IS ON THE FRICKIN TOP OF THE UNIT!

No sense in knocking sense into you, either.

Wrong again, asshole :)

Not to mention that it has the headphone jack ON THE TOP, you know, so people on the street laugh at you and everything.

He works about 3 feet from me, so I spend several hours of the day with him and I know from casual conversation that he is PC illiterate. Besides as I posted:

"Is it hard to set up? If I got one, could you hook me up with all the games and shit? I'm not too good with computers and stuff..."

Did you not read? It was a ploy to scare him off.

Well, there's this: http://gpnewbie.com/gp2x/index.htm ... but again, he'd still have trouble, since he's 'not too good with computers and stuff' (see above).

4. GP2X must be too complicated in general. With the GP32, there are no scripts or hacks to %$*& around with.

Do you own one? It's not needed to use scripts for most of the stuff we have. And again, you chose to ignore pertinent parts of my original post just to bolster your troll-like reply.

Fail/10

You may now leave.

I barley even talk about it. The only time i've only really spoken about it is when someone asks about it, and even then I'm just like, "It's a GP2x, it plays old school games.".

Fine, Gpnewbie is fine and all, but I seriously doubt any newbies would find a post by a person named shinneri and click on his signature, taking them to a guide that is immediately visible upon opening the website.

I love my gp2x and i do talk about it too much however that doesn't make me someone who does all the crap you just mentioned. gp2x has actually made me more casual about gaming. I dont get super caught up in gta style 3d games as much anymore... I still play those but in moderation... With the 2x i just switch it on inbetween doing this or that and play some quake or streets of rage or minigameproject for 5 or 10 minutes then use it on flights, car trips etc. Also I never even noticed that the 2x's headphone jack was in a weird place until you brought it up. It simply wraps around or under the unit and never gets in the way. It is also a very good position if I want to play music through an audio out cable through my speakers and it is a huge part of the design of the docking bob that the bottom be clear. It is not that unusual... the ipod mini for example had its headphone jack on top.

Wow you know I just noticed, the headphone jack IS on the top isn't it?

PAH! all of this time I have been so damn naive. I have been wasting all of this time with full speed emulators at 1:1 and these homebrew games, and PC ports like Duke Nukem. But the damn jack is on the TOP!! OH no, say it isn't so Joe. I must now get a hammer and bust it to pieces. I will now just wait for the XGP kids with it's tiny 1" screen and Gameboy Color resolution. I don't know what got into me the Headphone jack is on ... on... THE TOP!!! N000000000000000000000OOOOOOOOOooooooooooo.

Actually more traffic arrives from the links on wikipedia than through gp32x.de.
