Great But Lessor Known Fighting Games For Snes?

Perhaps Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Tournament Fighters.

What are some of the games you had in mind that you know of?

Also, I ran into this while searching.

Captain Commando, but the guns and effects are better in the arcade version.

Wait, is this beat'em ups or just 2P fighting games?

If we're talking streets-of-rage style side scrolling pound em ups, then you can't go far wrong with "Battletoads & Double Dragon"

I was actually talking about 2D fighters like Street Fighter, Fatal Fury etc...

That I had in mind? I have one in mind, but that's why I made this thread hoping one of you retro experts would mention it so I could remember. I played this fighting game years ago when I was like in 3rd grade. It was really fun and I remember liking it more than Street Fighter. I only had it for a couple days since my friend let me borrow it...

Sadly since I only had it for such a short time I don't remember too many details. Actually I don't remember too much aside from it being a fighting game and very fun.

It could be Fighter's History(something like that). It's basically a carbon copy of Street Fighter. Not a bad game at all.

Dead Dance was pretty good.

Edit: it was also known as Tuff E Nuff

I play the snes more than anyone I know give us a clue and if no one else can I know I'll be able to help you.
almost every fighting game has a weirdo or some chick in it can you remember what they or anyone else in the game looked like or a special move maybe.
give me a hint and I'll be able to help failing that post that you can't and I'll give you a list and some descriptions.

This might not qualify for "lesser known", but since no one else mentioned it, Mortal Kombat!

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 was the bees fucking knees for fighting games! Hell I still remember the tons of cheat codes, and how amazingly addicted I was to the mini game you could unlock in the cheat menu.

GET OVER HERE!

Also, Fatal Fury, Killer Instinct, Virtua Fighter, Tekken. Killer Instinct being the second best fighting game on SNES, below only MK3. Street Fighter, while great, ranks 3rd on my list.

killer instinct would have been the one that I would have suggested, because it is definitely a lesser known game... and IMHO, the ONLY game that should have gone vs Mortal Kombat... SERIOUSLY... the general game styles are nearly identical...

Dragon Ball Z Super Butouden 3 and Dragon Ball Z Hyper Dimension are worth a look, I think. The former features the ability to fight in the air, which is quite fun.

you let me know where you can find a copy of Hyper Dimension, Prometheus, and I'll pay you for it... they only made 55 copies of that game for release!

I strongly doubt that only 55 copies were divided between both Japan and France (the two locations the game was released in). ;) It wouldn't have been economical to release such a low number.

it was a limited release on purpose... I researched this heavily when I first heard about the game about 7 years or so ago and madly wanted to find a way to play it. It was really only "mass produced" in the arcades, and that was still very limited. I distinctly remember all research I found pointing out that they only made 55 copies of Hyper Dimension... this is also reflected in gaming stores that offer buy-back options... that game, along with Dragonball GT Final Bout for PSX have 2 of the highest buy-back values in the industry... not sure if they are THE highest, but I know they're up there... both being worth over $100 USD with a resale price tag of over $200 USD... contact any GameStop (not sure if they are global yet) or your local 2nd hand video game store... if they have records of buy-back values in their computer systems (...if they have computer systems :p ...that's not necessarily guaranteed even in this day and age).

I'm calling shenanigans. If there are only 55 of them and they're selling to Gamestop for $100, I suggest you hit ebay where you can buy 17 of them for between $35 and $50. Make yourself $1000 easy. :p
It may be rare, but I don't think it's as rare as you are suggesting. Perhaps they only made 55 for the US?

I remember the coverage when it was first released. Dragon Ball Z was (as usual) very popular in Japan, so again I strongly doubt that they would have limited the numbers of a game that would likely have been a surefire seller.

There's no arcade version of this game, though. Please pardon me if I'm misunderstanding you.

There's an unrelated arcade game from three years prior, though, and another from two years prior, but these are a bit off-topic.

So, how many were released in Japan, and how many in France? :p

Dragon Ball Z Hyper Dimension wasn't released in my country, and unfortunately 1: most stores I know of that did take trade-ins would never accept imports, and 2: we have no true specialist games chain store in the UK anymore, so I have no way of obtaining any such information. (A buyout of Gamestation, the only competitor to the dominant chain known as GAME, was allowed in 2008. When this was approved, GAME had Gamestation destroy all of the retro stock in order to get tax breaks for destroying "electronic waste".)

For what it's worth, I paid about £7 for my copy, so again, I doubt it's all that rare and expensive. :p

To my knowledge, it wasn't released in the US at all, Stan. :p

you "could" be right, stan... it may have been limited to that for the american version (especially since gamestop only lists american versions of games in their buy-back system)... so I can't necessarily negage what you say...

I also admit that my research was from roughly 7 years ago last I checked into it... on that same note, it is pretty easy nowadays to make fake versions of SNES games complete with all the cartridge technology involved. I've seen a few in pserson that were bought by some not-too-bright associates at an old gaming store I worked at before they got bought out... forget the title of the game though, but I do remember it was pretty rare and had a fairly high buy-back value... something like $40 or $50 USD at that time... I kind of stopped caring after a while and (conveniently for this conversation, but unfortunately because I sincerely believe what I am saying) allowed my research to fade away to the point where I'm sure I have nothing left of it from back then... Moving from one state to another (geographically) and back again helped with that, I'm sure. So for now, you can call my FUD and I will somewhat back down until I feel the need to go research it again and better back up my statements here. AFAIK, it's the only dragonball game I have yet to play at least once (aside from some of the newer DS and PS3 titles...

Neither was Mother, but there's a fully functional and translated cartridge out there somewhere. :p
Assuming CPU isn't totally off his rocker, it's possible they did the translation and produced 55 cartridges as some sort of special promotion or contest. It's not like there's a huge amount of dialog to translate, and cartridge fabrication isn't all that costly. Maybe they were gearing up for a full run but lost funding or licensing and had to pull out after the "beta" cartridges were created.
Or maybe CPU is thinking of a different game altogether.

no, I'm definitely thinking of Hyper Dimension... like I said, aside from the newest stuff in the last yaer or two, it's the only game based on Dragonball (Z/GT/etc) that I have not played. WizardStan is probably right about the translated version thing. It wouldn't surprise me. Especially since the research I had was very spotty to begin with. I think it was a funding thing, but I can't remember if it was the team that made the game, the manufacturing process of the game, or the parent company of the whole thing that lost funding for it to be discontinued. But it would be cool as hell if it was re-released (legally or otherwise, tbh) translated with newer actor voice overs...
