Right - So I've downloaded Firefox, and I'm posting with it now.

Take me through some of its more interesting features those who have used it already....

Make me not want to go back to IE.

:p

I use it sometimes, the best feature is pop-up blocking I'd say. And tabbed browsing. ( right click, open in tab... )

Just try not to use its downloader too often, its buggy. <_<

First off, use the middle mouse button to click a link, or (ctrl+left mouse), Tabbed Browsing :) (the most usefull feature in the world, one that just about every browser EXCEPT IE has)

Second, goto any website with popups, THERE ARE NONE! (you can manually put sites on your allow list if you need to, like ICQ anywhere, etc...).

Third, find an ad or images from any server (like big ugly sig images) right click on the image and "block images from this server!" (i've done this to 100+ servers so far)

Fourth I would check all of the addons and plugins available.

The main features of firefox are under the hood, so its not really visual things, just great security (you will never have your browser hijacked, or your homepage forcefully changed, porn links forcefully installed on your PC and favorites, viri installed on your PC by your browser, (or any other internet crap like that that goes on)) (and all of this is Out Of The Box, no 3rd party anything) All of it is easily configureable as well.

Just try not to use its downloader too often, its buggy.

Odd, I have downloaded thousands of files with the downloader (file sizes ranging from 5K to 600 MB), and I love it, perfect files everytime, pause/resume functions, all of the downloads on one dialog, etc.. its great. There are even really great plugins for the downloader.

Hold ctrl and roll the mouse wheel (if you have one), the fonts change sizes depending on how YOU like it, not how the webdesigner thinks the font should be (really nice for some sites, or really high res monitors) (its ctrl + and ctrl - if you dont have a wheel)

Check out the themes in the tools/options, Firefox has a native theme system (hell check out all of the options on the options dialog, they are designed to be easy to use and not have alot of useless extras)
I highly suggest you look into the extensions, download some, there are some really nice extensions.

Also check out the "View Page Source" its much better than IE (which just uses notepad).

Besides that, as I said, most of the goodies are under the hood, its MUCH smaller than any other browser, very fast, and, it uses an open UI system where you can script the UI how you like it.

Hmm, well, I guess with a regular download it works fine, but if you try to download a special item ( like a theme ) and the file isnt there, it will mess up.

i mean are there ones from tv shows or music or games etc that other people have made?
I dont know, there is bound to be, if not you can easily cut up some images and slap together your own theme, its not to difficult, just like making a winamp theme really.

Personally I like this one
http://www.cs.txstate.edu/~as1130/themes/icandyjr/index.html

Its pretty simple, still the same standard colors (nothing to odd) but has nice buttons and whatnot. (and it can EVEN be used in IE if you have...again, like everything in IE...some 3rd party software haha)

(however it does have some stupid little hearts on the tabs...ugg, oh well)

How can you make themes like that?!

I looked all through their site and found nothing, and the themes to download are in a special type of archive...

Actually yes, simply goto View / Sidebar / Downloads (which will show the downloads as a sidebar) then click on the downloaded file from the list and choose SHOW, it will open the folder it was downloaded in.

To do this you need to download the extension: "Download Manager Tweak "

Now if you dont want to have to select "view/sidebar/downloads" everytime, simply check the option "[X] Open download manager after delay of 0 ms" and make sure the option "Open in SideBar" is selected (or open in new window, or tab, whatever floats your boat) If you do it as a Tab, make sure to check the "[X] Load download manager tab in the background" option.

Download it here:

Well... after a few hours of playing, I think I like it, and I'm gonna gove it a bit longer before I make up my mind. I do like the tabbing thing - saves muchos taskbar space.

i have another question. is ther any way to make it so that it brings up the dial up connection thing when you open it, like ie does?
Get broadband.

Or, just put the "Connect to the Internet" link in your quicklaunch.

I run generic Mozilla. But I've got something to suggest:

Adblock

It kicks 'Block all images from this server's ass. Basically, you right click image and click 'Adblock' then the URL appears. You can block that one image or insert * wildcards. For instance

http://www.somesite.com/ads/*
http://*doubleclick*

This means you get full control over what you block. Furthermore, any Flash animations have tabs underneath them, just click to adblock.

With pop-ups gone by default and DHTML-based advertising failing due to reliance on crappy IE-biased JScript, this has virtually replaced my use of Proximitron, another fine adblocking proxy.
