I have a media player that I want to use a 4gb USB stick with.

The recommended file format is ext2 or ext3

2 questions

Which file format would everyone recommend and why?

How can I format the USB stick on a PC with windows 7 x64?  Preferably software that doesn't require an install or burning a disc.

ext3 is a journalised ext2. I would recommand the newer version (faster check)

Not sure if you can format using window but your pandora can do it for you.

to copy files on it later, there is a windows ext2 driver floating somewhere on the net

Just use fat32.. It's not like you're going to hit the 4GB file size limit..

Just format the drive in Linux, it's easier than telling you how to do it in Windows. ;)

I've only ever hit 4gb on a single file 5 times in my life.
Never made an backup of a harddisk partition or DVD?Furthermore the first episode of my Firefly HD Rip is 4,7 GB big (double episode...).

I have 1tb drive on the media player that's NTFS as it has DVD & Blu-Ray rips on it.

The USB stick is for temporary files that I want to upload (via Ethernet), watch then delete.

The media player only allows uploads in the kb/s unless the drive is ext2/ext3 I am going to use a spare USB stick for temporary files.

To be honest, no, I've never.

I borrowed a movie from the internet and it was 11GB.
