I've asked this before but never got a response from anyone developing the emulators. Is there any chance at all that this could be done. For example, when opening the Master System emulator, could we get the Master System boot-up sound as the emulator opens up??? I. WOULD. LOVE. THIS. !!!!

...you would't need emulation, it would just have to play a sound. Why not just write a tiny script that plays the sound then runs the emulator?

I've seen ST emus that make the 'disk grind' noise as the floppy emulation reads; I've seen versions of UAE (Amiga) that do the 'click' as the Miggy absentmindedly checks if a floppy is in disk. Arcade emulation that says in that weird voice, "Namco!" as Tekken powers up, etc.

I agree, it does help the authenticity (if getting on the nerves as much as it did back in the day ;)

Admittedly, I also really think fring up the original adds a lot to it too, but of course is less possible; I was playing Empire (Battle of the Century) in black and white on my STacy ST laptop awhile back, which is awesome.. and playing text adventures on a dual-sided Atari 800 floppy on an XEGS. MAn, gtta love retro;)

So yeah, maybe I should add some of this to my emus.. hmm :)

I'm glad you agree! Hopefully the others will follow.........surely this should be a given on an emulator! Any yes, the title is a bit mis-leading, I meant that the sound should be added to the emulator, not actually emulate the boot-up, my mistake dude...how about having to type load "" on the speccy emu too???

jajaja, it would be nice to have the psx4P4nd4
to get it the optical drive laser screeching and the bios wake up. sounds.

i just love that,

on my first university project i actually did sort of that on a presentation.
just a nintendo blip spoof.

then if we really want to go nuts with the cartridges consoles we could also add the blowing the cart sound.

ok thats nuts here you go

Can you then turn the 'emulated' click off with the noclick commodity? :D

Seems to me that what would be a function of the emulators front end. Of course I would think that since Ive been working on PEF for quite a while now.

my STacy ST laptop
Lucky bugger! :)

<offtopic>

I've done my time my friend ;) Back when I was a dumb kid I worked as an Atari ST salesman at the local computer store, even ;)

But you know my ST fetish, and as an arcade machien collector I've done my driving around and shipping .. I've spent a lot of years seeking out stuff, so I've got an STacy 2 laptop, a TT030 machine (one of these days gotta get an ethernet card for it and run NetBSD on it ;), and about 2 years ago I found a wrecked ST Book (one of the worlds first notebook laptops.) The ST Book took me awhile to repair (no info, no parts, etc), but I've got it mostly working .. and I don't even know how to use the damned thign since no manuals or info are around, since so few made :)

So you want some ST geek pics, I got 'em ;) I mean, I've spent like, well my whole life hording the few its of Atari junk I can get ;)

(Actually, I've got a wiki up for my rare ST stuff, but I turned it private so we could use it for PAndora development discussions and such, but I'm trying to move over the good bits to the public Pandora wiki so I can return my Atari Rar eMachines (mostly empty) wiki public again ;)

I see logic gates!!! Hehe, that's one thing I like about older devices. Seeing the humble logic gates around makes it seem more like a digital circuit and less like black magic.

Nice repairs also, btw. I wonder how did you find which paths were broken. I'm guess testing each input to see if any signal reaches it.

To date I haven't seen a single Gameboy emulator with this:

Probably because the legality of including the boot image with the emulator is questionable...

I'm curious about this, too. Particularly, the early Master Systems had a hidden maze game accessible via the boot screen which I'd love to still be able to play from time to time.

I have seen boot screens/sounds from other emulators, like the Sega CD, Neo Geo (were those on the carts rather than the BIOS?), PSX, and Saturn, but those were all in the BIOS files which are illegal to have in many cases.

I'm sure lots of SMS emulators have the option to boot from the boot ROM, but you have to have the boot ROM.

Anything that'll show boot code would be running off of a BIOS image that you have to provide. The legalities around BIOS images are no different than those of ROMs, or likely even CD images. If you dumped the BIOS image yourself from your own console then it may or may not be legal. Of course few people think there's an issue with obtaining a BIOS for a console you already own, or ROMs for games you already own, and you're never going to get caught or prosecuted for it so it's all technicality.

Could be. I never really looked into it, since most of the time I've just gone straight to the game I wanted to play. That maze was super difficult... I want to beat it some day. :D Some of the later models came with Alex Kidd built in--Miracle World, I think.

All true, hence the "illegal in many cases." Maybe it would have been more accurate to say "illegal in some cases." I do actually own the systems I emulate so I don't worry about it, but afaik those BIOS files are illegal to distribute with the emulators themselves (like ROMs). Still a pain in the arse to find sometimes though.

Extracting the Gameboy Color Boot Rom

One reason that this is not a common feature that getting these boot images off of the hardware can be difficult. Also most people wouldn't bother to retrieve a bios image (that the person distributing the emulator cannot include for legal reasons) from the usual places just to hear a boot sound.
