DIYS replacing nubs help

 Well our Pandora's are getting older and parts are wearing out, some of us don't mind trying to fix things our selves. Anyway I was wondering if anyone (maybe you too Askarus) could give  us a complete description on how to replace a nub as safely as possible. I know there are others out there who would be interested in this info as well.
 
There is 5 or 6 solder points, and the nub is very plate, so you'll have to use a thin cutter.

Heat the solder point, then put the blade right between the nub and the board, to separate them.

DO NOT LIFT, or you'll damage traces.

Do this for each solder point.

Be patient, take your time, and it will be fine.

hmmm it looks like a situation where heating 2 joints at the same time would be safer...
 
Nice, thanks for the photos.

Now would it be easier to use desolder ribbon or a solder sucker on the joints first maybe?
 
Another thing when doing this, be careful with the micro resistors. Can be easily removed in a bad move with the cutter or the iron.
 
Will a 15-30w $15 solder iron be ok for the job or should I get something better?

Also why are all soldering irons so dang long? Makes them so hard to keep still, they should make ones that are like 4 inches or something. I'll have to take a lorazapam first :)
 
Eeesh! At that price I'd be worried about current leakage on such a hi-tech board. Worth looking up what the leakage is from that iron.


That said, a few mA leaked into the power rails won't do much, and is probably within range on the data lines (no idea if these nubs are analogue out, or it's digitised internally). I'd worry about the tip on such a cheap iron - though you can always buy a new, finer tip.


Meh, but you should just buy a better iron anyway. Your cheap Canadian iron may not even be powerful enough to melt our stronger European RoHS-compliant lead-free solder ;)
 
Have any of you heard of Chip Quik?  It is an SMD removal alloy that works pretty well.  I messed up my  EXT port a while ago and removed it with the Chip Quik.  It was extremely easy.  I bought one of the broken PCBs so I could get a working EXT port and swapped them.  I just tried removing one of the nubs and it worked pretty good as well.

This might sound like a weird hint, but here goes: I... ahem... acquired... some packs of plasticky dental sticks from a hotel years ago :rolleyes: . I played with them during dinner while there and realized they might be good for this purpose... so, I kept some "samples".

Indeed, when filed with a nail file I can make beautiful wedges from them.

They do not scratch any surfaces at all. And they are very light, no handles etc. so I can freely move any PCB I stick them in without worry. Can take a break from work, for example, without any "extra care".

Check your local supermarket. They can be a bit difficult to find, though.

Because I'm not sure what they are actually made of, the stuff is kind of papery in the sense that it breaks when bent enough, but it feels like plastic, not paper or wood.

Whatever you use, when you have a submillimeter separation between the nub pcb and the actual pcb, separate the connection(s) via vacuum or solderwick. Or if there is no excess solder, by simply by heating only the nub side of the joint --> solder will "hop up" from the PCB side of the joint. (Same process for chips, by the way unless you got a rework station).

As already said, but should be stressed: Absolutely no pulling.

I've never had much luck with desolder ribbon personally.
Well I use solderwick more than the vacuum. It is quite useless without flux, though, you really need to coax some flux into the wick. Some wicks apparently have flux in them, but these days I just buy the plain stuff and add fresh flux, cheaper that way and still works better. Wick has more uses than just removing excess solder while replacing parts, especially when you try to work with SMC armed with only an iron ( :( , but I've made a firm decision a SMC station will be my next "big" purchase :) ).

There are SMC chips that are (when the PCB is mostly unpopulated) quickest to solder by using solder generously and then just wicking the excess out.

I would get a cheap temperature controlled one. They are still cheap, but in my experience things like digital displays and higher wattage (quick warmup) are more "optional" and "just neat'. Temperature control is really good to have especially if you are clearing excess solder someone else has put in place or are just not very sure of what it is you're doing, you need to be that extra bit more watchful and quick with an iron that is not temperature controlled.

Could be just my lack of skill from back then, though... Haven't used those $15 irons for a looooong while and when I did I was only starting. Anyway it is also a question of work ergonomics - the actual iron in a soldering station is much lighter and nicer to operate.

Oh and one last thing: Don't forget that in theory the Pandora is ROHS, so using ROHS (i.e. leadless) solder is recommended, I'd guess...

But of course in your case you remove the old solder fully anyways?

I'm not going to say mixing the two is really bad, not knowing anything at all about chemistry stuff... but for myself, I simply use whichever is appropriate kind of "out of habit and neatness".
 
Yeah, I'd second using lead-free solder to work on the Pandora board. That also ties in with the idea of getting a new tip - the old tip's presumably been tainted with leaded solder, so you can just keep that to work on locally made (and sold) stuff or stuff older that the mid-90s when the EU regulations came in. Mixing solders results in you making new alloys which will still conduct, but will probably be more fragile because the crystalline structure gets disrupted. You don't really want weak solder on load-bearing points like the nubs.


Those toothpicks may be made out of cellulose, I guess. You might also try the nylon tabs out of shirt collars - although they might be a little wide for the purpose.

I got a cheap "No Clean" liquid flux, it works like a charm to solder/desolder!

I used lots of it to solder an Arduino "ScrewShield", the solder even got on the opposite side of the board and made a nice soldering joint xD

But it stinks and emit fumes… so get a little fan to extract them!
