As there are a lot of posts hidden in the ask craig section, I will make a new post here.

I heard, there are some apps that are not available from repo. Which ones do you need from a.o.o?

Maybe we can do something about it.

Edit: Craig just said, that there will be a huge html5 update for the appspage.

Craig, could you explain a bit why this site is still needed or what features it will have?

This is not bashing or something, just curiosity.

Nothing has been locked or deleted, read the rules about the ask questions and you will see why your posts were hidden.

Also, a HTML5 version of Apps has been in the works for ages, it can host files from anywhere, you don't even have to upload them, just link to them.

Once again, if you had read my reply in the ask questions section, you would see that apps has a place holder page as the main page now.

we cannot even check :

Moving to HTML5 very soon.
But if craigx is working on an html5 version, I bet he wont allow it to be taken down. maybe is he planning to reuse the apps on the repo usng the repo API...

I have read that, don't worry. But I am not THAT quick in replying or editing.

Edit: ok, if it will be a place to gather all kind of stuff together, that makes a lot more sense.

I just don't want some site again, where stuff gets uploaded, outdated and is not maintainable for the authors.

Edit: Edited the first post according to info from craig.

Edit: Why can I not reply to my own thread in the ask craig section, if it isn't locked?

Is there really any difference......hidden == deleted == can not read. At least the thread as it was could have been moved instead of a thread like this one being created.

Well as I said to another mod here, I strongly disagree with the hiding of posts and/or topics. This is supposed to be OpenPandora, not sneaky Pandora, and I think we should all be able to see what posts/topics are being made as long as they're not offensive/abusive.

If a few people get their posts in before yours, it's not the end of the world. If it really bugs you that much I challenge you to think of another way of dealing with it, there must be a better way.

I'm inclined to agree, which is why I didn't see any sense in hiding the posts I saw, earlier (and I don't think I ever have at any other time, either, come to think of it... Excluding that time when there was that one fellow posting vulgarity, of course - I hold my hands up to that one, as it was surely not what one would want coming up in Google searches and the like in relation to the devices this place covers).

Isn't that why the Ask Craig Questions and Ask EvilDragon Questions sections exist, though? To address the previous issue where stuff would be asked of them in General Talk, and potentially/occasionally missed, or was answered with speculation?

Sure thing Prom, I haven't said otherwise. I just wonder if there's a better solution available, working within the limitations of IPB.

I guess that that's one for the admins to mull over. I haven't the faintest clue of what's out there, I must admit.

Well, it would be possible that all replies in those areas need to be approved by mods...

Still this was pretty lame, other threads in Ask Craig Questions have responses and nobody had problems with them, but mcobit's and mine have all of them deleted (or hidden, no difference) and the threads locked. Suddenly the rules became oh so important. I can't help but think Craig doesn't want to see supportive responses that were there and is engaging in censorship. This feels no different to "rewriting history" we have had here during Soviet occupation times.

(in response to "please remove my releases from apps.openpandora.org")

I would, but Ed broke apps.openpadora.org some time ago when something on the server changed and I'm unable to access it since.
That was pretty lame response too, ED upgraded the server sometime last year (I know this because my personal git repos broke), so it's obvious apps.op.org were abandoned for at least that time.

It is confusing to have several different software repositories. Could someone tell me why we need both repo.openpandora.org and apps.openpandora.org? I can see the need for something to store non-PND stuff (e.g. wallpapers, documentation, example config files, stuff you want to install to the NAND), but can't the repo be extended to allow uploads of non-PNDs in some standardized format? (e.g. a tarball which includes an XML file with metadata)

Since my other post was "hidden", I just try again here.

Yes, it really is confusing to have so much different places with different Pandora apps, not only Craigs (abandoned) App Store but also EDs old Archive and also some Apps that are listed in the Pandora Wiki. This makes it not easy for new users to get access to the entire Pandora Software library.

I recommend to move all the PNDs to the Repo, I know this will not be easy since only the maintainers of each app can do this but I hope it will work out somehow. Since accessing the repo is pretty easy over the Pandoras PND Manager & Co. tools, it is the best way for (unexperienced) users to deal with the PND system. :)

Apps was Craig's baby, but it was feature incomplete. He kept saying that he was working on something that would blow us away, and we waited and waited. Milkshake had an assignment for school (or something, details fuzzy) and wrote the repo as a result. Once his project was done, he then released it and we saw that it was pretty good so it stayed. We are still waiting on Craig's update years later.

I think we need both because competition drives improvement. Craig had apps, Milkshake saw ways to improve it so he did and repo was born. Now we await Craig's improvements, eager to see what he has in mind to close the gaps he has with the repo.

Moving all PNDs from my old File Archive to the Repo would make sense though.

And than only allow non-PND files and make a big message which links to the repo for downloading apps and games, whereas you can download other stuff (fonts, PDFs, etc.) in the archive.

I still have a good number of pnds on the archive that I have not brought over to the repo. Most of the work would be updating the pxml, I also try to refresh the build if newer code is available.

It just takes time and motivation, which I lack either of lately.

Well, if I could help you with the PXMLs, I'd do it.

Newer code builds would be great. Vice could really make use of notaz SDL as well, as it currently has vsync issues :)

Let me know what I can do.

I can fully understand the demotivation (had this more than once with the whole Pandora project...), especially now where it's too warm to even think properly :)

I fixed a lot of the pxmls in sebt3s pnds for upload to repo. If you want, just send me a list and I'll update them for you :)
