    Wolf3d On Gp2x

There may be a little confusion because the GP2X port of Wolf3D used to be under the GP32Wolf3D sourceforge page. Now it has its own page. It also has this boring GP2X Wolf3D page.

    Sd Card Speed

That's why I had a link in my previous post. It was there to illustrate a case where you might care about write speed. It has yet to be confirmed that speed is the issue, though.

    Sd Card Speed

Write speed may matter. Weird Pausing Problem Though, I suspect that the firmware will be fixed at some point and this problem will go away.

Hmmm, I have v1.2.0, and both the Kingston and Viking cards that I have work.

That's almost exactlly what I've noticed with the game I'm working on.

    Strange Problem Gp2x

I notice it on the unreleased game that I'm currently working on, so that's not an option for you to test. Though, I have been told that it is dependant on your SD card. Some SD cards are faster and thus don't notice a pause when they're written to. Torpor said it didn't do it with his...

    Strange Problem Gp2x

I logged in over my USB Serial Gadget. Indeed mount reports that the card (even when locked) is in read/write state. I was even able to write a new file to the card when it was supposedly locked. :(

    Strange Problem Gp2x

This kinda sucks. I tried the lock thing again, and this time I got a pause. I think it wasn't as long, but there was still pausing. Also, it's worth noting that this test was on another SD card. I'll try to determine if GP2X is actually mounting it read-only or not. I even noticed a change...

    Strange Problem Gp2x

There's a chance that you're right. Though, if you are, I just got really lucky when I tested it. That's part of why I am hoping that more people can try it and post their results. EDIT: Read below to see that the lock switch is ignored by the GP2X.

    Strange Problem Gp2x

Yes, it seems that there are two things that access the SD periodically. 1) Automounter. When you pop in an SD card, the automounter is what figures that out. It also checks periodically and does reads/writes. 2) VFS. I think that this is what does the atimes and updating cached writes...

    Strange Problem Gp2x

Here's another easy test that you guys can try. Flip the write-protect "lock" switch on your SD card to make it Read Only. Then try your games again. I think that you will notice little or no pausing. Please post here if you try this. EDIT: I have since confirmed that the GP2X ignores the...

    Strange Problem Gp2x

I was on IRC for a bit this morning, and I brought this issue up. It was suggested that the pauses are actually related to the SD card. Squidge mentioned that the GP2X does not mount the SD with "noatime" so at some point, the OS will start marking the file access times on the SD card...

I tried it. Unfortunately, I saw no difference. :(

Cool. I already have a script, so I'll try that. Thanks.

    Strange Problem Gp2x

I do not think that this is the type of pause that we're talking about. I'm talking about a pause in the middle of game play. Pick up any type of action game and play it for a bit. Do you ever notice a point where nothing happens (even the sound stops) for about a second? In the game I'm...

    Strange Problem Gp2x

Actually, I've been wondering about this, myself. The games that I've worked on porting seem to have this odd pause. Then, I tried some other people's games and they did the same thing. Can anyone actually diagnose what's causing this? Is it the OS stealing the CPU for a while or what?
