WiFi mysteries resolved once and for all — Power saving is clearly the culprit!

Question 1: Is there a reliable way to run the Pandora, while having the LCD completely inactive*, and the WiFi active? * Not merely the backlight off, but really completely off! Both the signal cable transmitting nothing to the LCD, and the LCD's circuits completely off. Does lid-closing do...

WiFi mysteries resolved once and for all — Power saving is clearly the culprit!

The USB WiFi adapter works seamlessly, but in idle mode, it consumes considerably more power (example: Compo4all, while 3min game WiFi is idle, then only busy for 1-3 secs while uploading score, then idle again for a long time — during all that idle time lot more energy is wasted than with...

ExFAT - cutting through the BS [SOLVED]

@_wb_: In case you consider modifying the GParted PND so that it contains the ability to format ExFAT, please ensure, that the nasty bug "multi step operations fail, as device gets auto-mounted inbetween, kernel thus forbidding the next step" (fixed by sebt3) does not re-occur. Thanks!

WiFi mysteries resolved once and for all — Power saving is clearly the culprit!

    1) a ) I tested again, ensured that the Pandora is the only device on my wireless network. The results were bad as usual. 30-60 KB/s, either staying that disappointing, or getting to a stall somewhen. b ) Btw, the WiFi channel distribution in my urban neighborhood: ch1 (3 networks, -90 - -65)...

WiFi mysteries resolved once and for all — Power saving is clearly the culprit!

As mentioned, changing channels had no effect. What I'll try is a test in a rural area with the Pandora being the only WiFi device connecting to a router with a wireled webserver.

WiFi mysteries resolved once and for all — Power saving is clearly the culprit!

    1) In my tests, I had no other clients connected to my networks (my family's laptops switched off), nevertheless ran into problems. Maybe the smartphones were tuned in. Will try this! Maybe a source for troubles. 2) But what I cannot change is, that I am in a very urban place, with loads of...

WiFi mysteries resolved once and for all — Power saving is clearly the culprit!

@ED & @Askarus: Today I tested my Pandora with the router FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7113 Annex A, as you said you had tested my 3rd shipped Pandora with a Fritzbox router and it worked fine. Test result: It worked as bad as usual :(  . I tried both with the normal driver and the special driver mode...

WiFi mysteries resolved once and for all — Power saving is clearly the culprit!

    2) a ) Thanks for clarifying that USB-WiFi is fully automatic plug'n'play. Even more promising now. Already ordered the dongle. b ) Does unplugging cause any freezes/crashes or is it simply a loss of the network connection. On re-entering the USB WiFi adapter, do apps automatically resume their...

WiFi mysteries resolved once and for all — Power saving is clearly the culprit!

But this is only "USB host" in general (which you also enable prior connecting a USB flash drive, or USB printer, etc). It then needs another toggle for "activate WiFi over USB" (where and however this works!?) And this is what I want to spare myself. Toggle, wait, toggle, wait. I  That's why I...

But this is a service, which starts at boot/login time. Is there also the possibility to toggle it on/off while runtime with a single interaction? (Like the toggle for the internal WiFi)

WiFi mysteries resolved once and for all — Power saving is clearly the culprit!

    1) I tested again, and the MAC addresses always changed, so the profiles were read in this test session, and very likely also in my recent test session, with the disappointing results. This time I had speedy connections with all profiles (my own (porg), neelix, galaxis), meaning that I either...

    Release Pandora System Info

Point well made. I agree. So for now "the explorers on the frontier to the WiFi lands" have to have there own rudimentary toolchain to make their explorations.

WiFi mysteries resolved once and for all — Power saving is clearly the culprit!

I tried loading various calibration profiles. After loading the driver with the profile from file, my Pandora connects to my WPA-PSK encrypted network of my D-Link DI-524 router, and then I wget a large file (753MB) from a very fast and reliable server (Ubuntu mirror). Profiles from Neelix...

@Forum admin: Btw, could you please remove that annoying file type limitation (everything besides the usual (jpg/gif/png/txt) is forbidden). Have to rename .bin files each time prior attaching. Hope .pnd and .zip are allowed!

WiFi mysteries resolved once and for all — Power saving is clearly the culprit!

@Notaz: Please remove my MAC address from the publicly available profile. Thanks! (I removed it from my public post as well, had not known that the MAC was included) I am willing to test other profiles now (i.e. from Neelix). Before this I need some info from you, please. AFAIK all Pandoras...

    Release Pandora System Info

    1) Never experienced that freeze bug before. 2) Glad that the 2 pandora projects I put my most efforts in (co-operation with _wb_ for sysinfo (this very thread), my detailed investigation of the WiFi problems), now receive such attention, and as @torpor suggests: a ) to add the WiFi chip...

WiFi mysteries resolved once and for all — Power saving is clearly the culprit!

@notaz: Does the dump vary from location to location (different WiFi environment), or is the calibration static, and does not change (partially) according to the environment (chosen network , encryption, etc)? If it would vary from place to place, then I'd dump the profile at different...
