Oracle to open source Arm jdk 9

It's true, that Java is pretty unusable for writing classical desktop applications, but for large-scale business applications Java is perfect (only the server-side-code, no applets)! There are many Web Applications still written in Java. The code is extremely readable and maintainable due to...

Might have a good reason to have one now.

You should try OsmAnd+ on an Android phone. You can use it completely offline with OpenStreetmaps-Vector maps. The routing also works fine offline. You can get the free version OsmAnd~ from other "App-Stores" like F-Droid. Actually I'm looking for a piece of software wiht the functionality of...

    Screw in joystick

Ahhh... sorry guys... my bad! yes of course... I confused the D-Pad with the nubs. :-)

    Screw in joystick

Ok, maybe a drawing will help you guys! Imagine you put a stick on the Nubs-Housing: You won't be able to turn it. You could only slide the stick to the left/right/up/down on a plane. The housing would break

    Screw in joystick

I think the problem is more, that the nubs move on a flat surface and are not "turned". acoustic only makes sense, when there is a sphere on the bottom of it. Since the nubs ar moved on a plane surface, a stick above it would break them pretty quick.

    It's loud.

Am I right, that most of the sound optimization could be done via software settings (after the pyra has been delivered)? Of course not the sealing stuff or placement of the speakers in the case etc...

    It's loud.

Sounds great for me and even if the sound quality can't be improved I would be perfectly happy with it as it is. For me the best news here is, that the speakers can be changed by the enduser without soldering when they are broken. This should also be stated somewhere in the official presskit...

GPS Navigation Software on Linux (OsmAnd replacement)

Thanks for the hint! I gonna check it out on my ubuntu box.

    General questions thread

I'm working 13 years with linux and 8 years without windows anymore. I don't know linux to "it's full". Only the things I need. But now I mostly use it for work and I'm hardly fiddling around with the OS itself. I must say: It's a nice OS for getting things done...

    General questions thread

It's not complicated. As already said using a package manager makes it really easy to install a program! It's just a click. I think the difficulty is more, that you need to look for an alternative of the program you were used to use on your previous operating system. Don't try to port all...

GPS Navigation Software on Linux (OsmAnd replacement)

Thanks for your replies. Offline routing is crucial for me. This is one thing I need almost every day, when I'm travelling. I'm sure I'll find something, which fits my purpose. I already use marble on my linux box. I also stumbled upon Navit a few weeks ago. I'll have to take a closer look at...

GPS Navigation Software on Linux (OsmAnd replacement)

Hello, one piece of software I will miss most probably, when getting my Pyra and dumping my Android phone is OsmAnd. This application is the most used, when I am travelling. As the Pyra might arrive pretty soon (fingers crossed, glass half full) I'm looking for an alternative on Linux, which...

    General questions thread

Installers also exist in the linux world. you simply could write one for your own. If there is no installer for your desired application, then maybe nobody has written one yet or doesn't want to give it away, or the application is simply not designed to run on linux (e.g. depends on Windows...

    General questions thread

@Yasu You get it right! But you're still not dependent to a app store in Linux. You could always download Linux packages manually and install it with your package manager. As you said, the main difference is, that you can just run a pnd file without installing it before. The system "installs"...

In my opinion a docking station is not really needed. You only need to plug a USB Hub (With keyboard and mouse plugged in it), a Hdmi cable for the monitor, and micro USB for charging. Not as comfortable as a real docking station, but for me this setup works for many years now with my laptop...

    Tweaking and Finalizing

The colours look good in my opinion! Nothing to complain about. If this were the final ones I would flip a choose between the blue one or the grey on. Although I would most probably take the grey one simply because it's more neutral. Even in some years. I would love to see a Pyra in a light...

    News from all fronts

You might be better off checking the forum only once every three months. If you develop something new (no matter if it's software, or hardware) and you don't encounter problems, or you are never forced to rethink/restructure something, then there are three options: * The thing you are producing...

    Gamescom 2016

For me personally the Gpd WIN is not interesting at all! I would never buy it if the Pyra wouldn't exist. Maybe 15 years ago when I still was into playing games. I think, that there are some other people out there who want a small LINUX driven device for the sake of mobility+privacy+openness I...

Preorders Have Started. (Previously named starts in two hours)

For me running a Linux distribution, network (wifi, gps), display a desktop on the small screen, and keyboard/nubs working as well as working gps are sufficient features. Everything else are nice goodies. :) It's also fine for me if not every piece of software or driver is working at the time...
