    News from the embedded world

All this paranoia makes me rather sad (and it's a very poor base for design decisions).

A physical Dummy, Power Usage and MIPI

Peak power usage seems to be a general problem of the ARM Cortex-A15 design, and has been named as the main reason why it's not been very successful in the mobile market. Don't think a whole lot can be done about it when staying with the OMAP5 (besides maybe throttling the CPU while on battery...

    Charging connectors

I assumed the primary use for an USB3 port would be to connect some external storage. And then it would kinda suck to not be able to charge the Pyra when an external hard disk is connected via USB3... Or is the plan to use the USB3 port just as docking connector (with the docking station...

    (e)-SATA Port

Don't really get what an eSATA port should be good for on a device like the Pyra. An USB3 port ist going to be much more versatile. And two USB ports are useful too (at least if at least one of them also supports standard USB, like the OTG port on the Pandora): Most of the time that would mean I...

    SoC: Back and forth!

Allwinner seems to be mostly an Android shop, from a first look - the Cubietruck board that uses one of those (http://cubieboard.org/) comes with Android preinstalled, for example. And all the Linux distributions for that board seem to use the same 3.4.75 kernel...

    SoC: Back and forth!

Except the Pandora system uses the softfp ABI, which is not softfloat - the floating point hardware is very well used. Not that it makes a difference when switching the ABI for a new system (because neither softfp nor plain softfloat binaries won't work then, unless a compatibility layer is...

    The software side

I don't quite get what the package manager fuzz is about: That the Pandora has a way to "install" applications independently from the base system is one of the things that makes it so easy to use. It's a non-optional feature. I don't currently have an overview of the possible alternatives, but...

    Release Next version of Firefox

Great - thanks! FF is actually my most-used application on the Pandora (besides Terminal), probably would have lost interest in the device if that port didn't exist.. Small question (maybe already answered in another thread) after I sumbled over about:buildconfig when playing around with...

    P2 Slackware as default?

But it is. Don't confuse the base os with local userland - just have a look at which applications we have on the Pandora, and how old the underlying distribution is. Having a solid base like Debian only makes porting programs easier.

    P2 Slackware as default?

The default image, Raspbian, is based on *gasp* Debian/wheezy, with some minor modifications to fit constraints on the Pi. For example, they don't use pdiffs, and remove most old packages from the cache automatically. Personally, I would be very happy with Debian as the default OS on a Pandora...

Response time of Pandora successor screen

Can't decipher model info from the touchscreen assembly image - but it's something starting with AMS. This company carries a couple of displays with an AMS designation, might be a start: http://www.videoline.hk/ [edit] Seems like that's an ID for a Samsung display...

Finding a proper name and logo :)

How about PanTau then ;) (Ah the childhood memories - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pan_Tau...)

Finding a proper name and logo :)

...and Myriad is a great name, but others have noticed that too. There's at least one IT consultancy company by that name, a couple historic computer projects, and several clustering / parallel processing systems. I don't think anything taken plainly from classic mythology will work - those need...

Finding a proper name and logo :)

Pyrrha sounds like a troll idea - first thing I thought of was the term pyrrhic victory (although Pyrrha is not to blame for that particular connotation).

Dragonfly is in use by DragonFly BSD and multiple other computer projects.

    Pandora.. the BBS simulator/environment?

*sigh* Reminds me I still have my full QuickBBS ST installation on a couple of scsi disks (which I shut down in 2000 because one of the Y2K problems was that the QuickBBS ST key got invalidated). Didn't test the disks for ages, guess they are dead by now. [edit] Eh, should have read further...

    Shipping Estimate?

Looks like it hasn't reached USPS for distribution yet. Try dropping your number into the DHL tracking system at http://nolp.dhl.de/nextt-online-public/report_popup.jsp?lang=en&extendedSearch=true

Trying to find a fair solution

It doesn't matter what you think you did, or what is linked on the web site - what matters is who you formed your contract with when creating the order. And the orders went to different legal entities, each of which is (or should be, in Craig's case) dealing with their respective customers.

    Craigs Preorder List Update

Does that stuff even exist anymore? Back when it was still possible, I downloaded a binary package of GarnetVM from the ACCESS web site (which kind of works on the Pandora), but I haven't seen anything about POSE for a decade or so. Don't see the Pandora as obsolete either. There still is...

    possible soc updates.

Yep, the ARM-based Freescale i.MX 6 series SoCs are popping up in various projects recently. Doesn't look totally off as an option for a Pandora successor.
