Kid Dracula: A fun side scroller, the hero is a vampire that can turn into a bat.

Also (to stay on topic), I can't believe no one has yet mentioned Secret of Mana (Secret of Mana 2 if we are going by Japanese numbering). This is an excellent action rpg featuring a party of three characters and a wide variety of weapons/magic. More combat oriented in my opinion...
I agree with most of the choices already mentioned, particularly Chrono Trigger and Earthbound. Here are some other RPGs that I own and recommend:

For those looking for an alternative carrying case, I remember hearing that NDS (fat) cases work well and you can probably find them on the cheap.
This is the first time I have spent more than ~50 hours on a non MMORPG. The main story can be finished fairly quickly, but this DQ has a lot more post game content than previous entries.
I haven't touched any other game since I picked this up, almost 170 hours played now. I was just wondering if anyone else here plays this game.
