JXD Singularity 192 new console Android

Bay trail tablets are insanely cheap - as cheap as their android counterparts.  It's only a matter of time before companies start sticking the new cherry trail chips in cheap tablets, and only a matter of time after that before JXD or GPD or Yinlips or whoever realizes it's just as easy to stick...

JXD Singularity 192 new console Android

Yes, it's so boring when the linux kernel is already optimized for your SoC, you get fully-functional and well-documented drivers right out of the box, and all your software "just works".  No fun in that at all. Much better to reinvent the wheel with every new hardware iteration. :P

JXD Singularity 192 new console Android

The MS surface 3 uses an atom X7.  Here's NSMB Wii under dolphin on the chip.  And here's some games under PCSX2.  Pretty impressive what intel can do these days with a 2W passively-cooled chip.

Chromecast Audio - Sonos for 1/10th the price?

iFixit did a teardown of both new chromecasts.  Nothing too surprising.  DAC is an AKM AK4430 - 192KHz, 24bit stereo.  I have no idea whether this is "world class" or not (probably depends on your personal standards), but it's more than good enough for the sort of streaming audio sources that...

JXD Singularity 192 new console Android

That's not completely out of the question.  The new cherry trail atoms are some of intel's "latest" chips, are 64bit, and fit within the same power envelope as high-end mobile SoCs.  You could conceivably build a pyra-like device with an atom X7 that would play older windows games fine, and even...

JXD Singularity 192 new console Android

These numbers don't make sense.  How can music playback drain the battery faster than video playback?  Considering the poor english and spelling mistakes, I suspect this is just a typo. I would have sold my soul for something like this when I was a kid, but as an adult, I have no use for it.  I...

    So, what you backing? [crowdfunders]

Yeah, the shipping costs for international orders were absurd.  Why they couldn't just drop-ship them from China where they're being manufactured (for practically free) was never adequately explained.  I hope (and expect) that post-kickstarter, they will be available locally for reasonable...

Chromecast Audio - Sonos for 1/10th the price?

That and wireless capability, a decent DAC, an enclosure, and ease of use.  You absolutely can use a RPi to kludge together a whole-house audio setup - I even mentioned this in the top post.  The difference is that with the RPi, it's going to cost a lot more than $35 per room before you're done...

    So, what you backing? [crowdfunders]

Exploding kittens shipped on time.  Granted, with the $8.7 million they got, they certainly wouldn't have had an excuse if they were late.   Teensy 3.0 was only a late by a couple of weeks.  I'm calling that "on time" by KS standards. I'm sure there are others, but those are the only two that...

    So, what you backing? [crowdfunders]

My pending backer queue: CHIP - $9 ARM SBC w/ wifi, battery management & video out.  Has a lot of interesting addons, like a blackberry-style "pocketCHIP' enclosure.  Currently on schedule - my alpha board should already be in the mail. Remix Mini - cheap ARM miniPC with desktopified android...

Chromecast Audio - Sonos for 1/10th the price?

And people who understand cost-benefit ratios don't care.  It's only a $35 widget.  If google drops support for it in five years (which is highly unlikely), so what?  You've gotten your money's worth many times over by that point.  It's not like this is a general-purpose computer - it's a device...

Chromecast Audio - Sonos for 1/10th the price?

"Openness" whinging aside, I won't be buying any until multiroom is enabled, as that is primarily what I want it for.  I have no issue with installing a browser plugin (gasp!), but I'm not going to shell out for hardware that doesn't yet do specifically what I need it to do.

Chromecast Audio - Sonos for 1/10th the price?

It's "universally accessible" in that it's available on every platform.  It's not like it only works on certain phones or under certain operating systems.  It's not limited to a particular "ecosystem".  Any person in a position to cast audio or video in their home already owns several devices...

Chromecast Audio - Sonos for 1/10th the price?

It is controllable from a chrome browser, which you can install on basically anything.  Any modern smartphone, any tablet, and any computer running windows, OSX, or linux.  Who cares if it's "open" as long as it's universally accessible?

Chromecast Audio - Sonos for 1/10th the price?

Everybody I know who has sonos speakers in their house loves them.  But with even the tiny play1 costing $200, and the larger units that can actually fill a room costing $500+, I couldn't justify the price to outfit my whole house with them.  Instead, I've been investigating DIY alternatives for...

Laser Razor on Kickstarter - Yes Really

I hate shaving, and can only be bothered to do it about once per week.  Luckily my profession does not discriminate against the scruffy-looking.  I would gladly pay $150 for this if it was faster/easier than the expensive fusion disposable blades I currently use.   Unfortunately, the demo video...

Retro VGS indiegogo campaign. (changed title)

FYI - here's a link to the atari age thread he mentioned at the end of the article.  It looks like he's significantly farther along than the retroVGS folks as far as prototyping, and he's not even sure he's going to make an actual product yet.

what is the cost of HDMI?

Again, these fees would have had to have been paid by the chip manufacturer.  The chip outputs HDMI signals directly, so it is a complete HDMI-producing entity.  I don't see how they could dodge the licensing, and once it's been paid, it's been paid.  You have to be able to use a fully licensed...

Retro VGS indiegogo campaign. (changed title)

Gotta love that internet drama :) If the retro VGS isn't actually using a FPGA, I honestly can't see the point.  If it's only going to give you purely software emulation, you can get that for a hell of a lot less from any of a number of existing platforms. However, if this kevtris guy really...

    Sega Dreamcast 2 - Theoretically!

I don't think it's likely that sega will produce any more consoles, and even less likely that they'd make another dreamcast.  Which is kind of a shame, because as Kahn has pointed out, the system is still quite beloved and developed for by a small but devoted group of fans. If they were to...
