PlayStation Phone

Thanks Tickles and johnsongrantr.

Perhaps this subject won't be ripe until batch three or four starts production...

I interjected my opinion because I've been looking for a way to help beyond not cancelling. For my purposes, I would prefer to stick with Ångström-only, but it seems likely that using the Google Phone OS would help the general public feel comfortable with the Pandora. If the right foundation is begun, the Pandora 2 or 3 might take off as a consumer product. No longer a nano-niche, but a micro-niche.

If the OPT could identify developers to port Android to the Pandora for a fixed price at a fixed date, a separate Android Dev Fund could be established on the "Charity Thermometer" model to collect money to be held in escrow until enough money is collected to pay the developers or some time established in advance runs out, at which point the Android Dev Fund money would be returned to the donors. I think something like this would be necessary because Android doesn't bring anything to those of us who are interested enough to subscribe to Pandora production now.

I wish I had something more interesting to contribute, but I don't, so I offer this suggestion.

more pictures... soopa sweet!

In my opinion, the dev fund should go to PANDORA ONLY developments, until the stock Pandora software is everything it can be. Not just because I despise the idea that something not as open would get any sort of consideration, but because that's what most dev funders would have thought the money would go to. By all means, make a seperate fund.

if there is an actual official official fund for android on the pandora I got $100 USD right now for it

If it isn't real yet it will be one day which is why I subscribe to the Pandora should run Android camp.
I thought this was an impossibility with the current Pandora because it doesn't have all the required hardware for Android. I still say hold off on Android, or at least make everything available for running a full Linux distro on the Pandora for those of us not wanting to jump on the Android bandwagon. I'll probably change my mind if a really really cool game comes out but I haven't seen any on Android yet.

Anyway, I think it would be stupid for Sony not to do a gaming phone and if Google will help make it killer then they should go with Android. They aren't doing too well in the handheld department, they might be catching up in the console department but are still really really lacking in the handheld side of things.

$9.99? they're $15 here. Damn all those big companies ripping Australia off
and the dollar is almost the same atm as well.
I'm not a PSP person but when I was at Toys R Us the other day the games for 9.99 were not that exciting.

Also, some annoying little kid does not make me want to go out and buy PSP games. I swear, Nintendo is on top most of the time because they have an actual advertising department, everyone else just 'wings it' with Bob from accounting.

I'm honestly not sure what Sony plans to do with their PSPhone. Sure it's a nice idea, but what about all those suckers with PSP games on UMD? Or games they downloaded for their PSP? I honestly don't think Sony cares enough to make emulating those possible. I'm afraid I have little hope for this thing.

How many expected Sony to make a perfect ps1 emulator for the psp? I think it's extremely likely they will make a psp/ps1 emulator for android. What disadvantage would it be to bring their store to all the android devices? I think the exact opposite, it doesn't make sense not to do it like that. I would be extremely surprised if they didn't tie the psp store games etc into this.

[…]

Well, the emulator is working well for PSN's games.

But for the old games that you ripped yourself, you frequently have to play around with the popsloader to choose the right version.

That's not what I call perfect…

Anyway, I won't get any PSPhone if they forget the UMD drive.

I don't want to buy my games twice because Sony has decreed that physical medias are outdated!

I'm pretty sure that's the direction they are trying to take the psp unfortunately ala pspgo. I think adopters of the pspgo feel the same way.

What would be a good move is if they make an app similar to the .cso homebrew app that let's you rip psp games on the psp it's self. Wrap it with their drm and you're good to go.

If this never comes out officially it's always an option for you if you hacked your psp. For the rest of the world I think they might be sol. Can you think of a better solution on how to upgrade an entire catalog from physical media to digital? Putting a umd drive on a phone is sorta laughable considering the sizes of microsd cards 32gb compared to 2gb umd, not getting into physical size, power consumption, moving parts, noise, finite lifespan of discs, scratch ability, cost to move, waste, middlemen involved in selling, etc etc

[rant]This is Sony we're talking about, amigo. If they think they can profit, they will attempt. Thus, if they can make everybody buy everything twice, they will... That's why HD Remakes irritate me when they should have taken the time to ensure backwards compatibility.[/rant]

In short, I'm going to lay low and watch.
