Shipping date?

I have been looking around on the forums to see when the second batch is going to start shipping, but I can not find anything. Is there a set shipping date yet or even an approximation? Also, how do I find out where I am on the list for getting my pandora?

The second batch will follow on directly from the last unit of the first batch... but unfortunately they aren't shipping out any more units until the issue with the nubs gets resolved. Once that's sorted (hopefully relatively soon) production should kick up a few gears - they've already got all the cases, loads of screens and at least 1000 boards just waiting for nubs.

You might be able to find out where you are in the list by emailing openpandora, but I don't know if they're giving out numbers for the second batch yet - as far as I'm concerned it doesn't really matter. Second batch units could start coming out next month or next year - no-one knows yet. Knowing how many setbacks this project has suffered it is never a good idea to set your expectations too high.

Or, in short: in Two MonthsTM. It's always Two MonthsTM ;)

I'm in the second batch as well. I also don't think it really matters where you are in the queue - quantifying that doesn't tell you much.

I am almost positive that when I was ordering it said something along the lines of "pre ordering now is the only way to guarantee that you get your pandora before christmas" so is that not true?

I'm just curious if this will ever get caught up with the pre orders and become readily available where I can order and expect in 3 to 5 business days. Not that I don't have faith but I can't afford to front that kinda cash and wait. I'm defiantly going to get one though I promise as the pandora teams promised ;) my wallets with you soon I hope. also I'm seriously considering a caanoo while I'm waiting for the pandora to become more available. is it worth it? or should I just wait and twiddle my fingers and contemplate a preorder some more.

I'm sorry but if you can't afford to buy it and wait but instead buy a Caanoo and THEN buy a Pandora something is definately wrong with your finances and you shouldn't be ordering EITHER of them.

Technically, I suppose so. I'm still hopeful, but I remember seeing that line in the email I got and doubting it then. Since then the nubs issue has appeared, but even when I ordered mine I assumed that something would go wrong - the Chrimbo estimate was always pretty optimistic in my opinion.

No I can afford both right now I just can't justify 400 dollars disappearing from my bank account for extended amount time with no specific time it will arrive i have the money Now and I'll have the money later hell let's just say I'll always have the money but could use it on Christmas gifts for my family instead of having it invested. Mind you I want to just do it but I'm trying to think ahead alil bit

That may have been true at the time you ordered, but with an operation such as this, things are bound to happen - things that really can't be helped. I too am hoping to get my Pandora before Christmas, but if I don't, I won't be upset nor will I be particularly surprised. If this were a big-name company with vast resources making this promise, then yes, I'd expect them to deliver as they promised. But the Pandora team is just doing the best they can and giving estimates based on their current situation. That's why they're giving us updates.

just curious...

if everything goes smoothly now (meaning no floods, volcanoes, exploding vans, alien invasions, armageddon, or anything), is there a possibility that some batch2ers will get their pandoras as a xmas gift??? hahaha! ^_^

It's possible, but there are some major hurdles.

There are still ~3k of the first batch to ship. They can assemble ~200 per edit: day, assuming the team has all the parts - don't know where I heard this quote. They don't have all the parts yet. ED, Craig, if you believe more can be assembled and shipped a week, definitely correct me. That puts us at about 15 weeks from the point of "We have all the parts, manufacturing GO!" 15 weeks for batch 1. If it's 500 a week, then things look much better...once they have all the parts!

The nubs are still being tested last I heard. Assuming they pass testing, then they need to be produced and shipped to the board manufacturers. It sounds like when the nub company is ready they can produce tons, like 10k+ quickly - maybe even within day, but I don't know what they'll have to do, if anything, to get ready once the new nubs are tested good, and how long it'll take to package them up and ship them. I don't know where the nubs are being produced, so I've no idea how long it will take to get to the boards company.

The board manufacturer has to solder the nubs to the boards, I'm assuming they still need to continue producing boards, then ship the nub soldered boards to the team. I don't know how many boards a day they can solder and ship, and if they're shipping every day or in batches once a week, or what. The shipping is from the U.S. to the U.K. Also, once they have all the nubs, they'll probably need to produce more boards than they have while they're soldering the already produced boards, and this is for batch 1. Even if they have all of batch 1 produced, I'm pretty confident they still have to work on batch 2.

As the board manufacturer ships the boards the team needs to assemble them, then box and ship them to the customers... last estimate I saw was ~200 a week. 3k of batch 1 still needs to go out first. That's also assuming that there are no further snafus. It sounds like the cases are pretty much done, at least for batch one. They'll need to get the cases for batch 2 yet, I think. I have no idea how many boards are produced. I believe they ordered 10k cases, they just need to get the manufacturer to produce the rest of them.

The biggest potential delays, at this point and for batch one, are the nubs - how long it takes to test, produce, and ship them - and the boards. I think once the nubs are done, it's the boards, shipping, and assembly that are the big hurdles. I think ED can keep up with a pace of 200 LCD cables a week - or quite a bit more for that matter. (The team may get to the point where they can produce and ship more, but that was the last estimate I heard.) I think they need everything, yet, for batch 2. Boards, cables, cases, etc.

The boards are coming from the U.S. ED's in Germany producing and shipping LCD cables, and Craig and the assembly crew are in the U.K. Don't know where the Nubs are being produced. The cases are being produced in China, and I don't think that will change until at least batch 3, if it ever does.

So that's the status as I understand it. If things go smooth, and all the companies actually produce the parts quickly, and my 200 a week is low, then there's a good chance that batch 1 and some of batch 2 gets out before Christmas, but I'm smelling a lot of IF coming off of these statements.

That's the best summary of where we're at that I can come up with based on what I've seen on the boards. Craig, Ed, feel free to correct anything I may have wrong, especially about the assembly times.

Cheers!

Edit: When I say batch 1 I'm referring to the first 4k group of pre-orders that started ~2 years ago. Batch 2 is the second batch of pre-orders. NOT to be confused with the first batch of ~1k Pre-order 1 orders. :-b

Edit 2: One thing that should help the assembly rate for this batch is I believe they're doing as much case assembly as they can prior to receiving the boards. Don't know how much they can do or how much it'll help, but any little bit, right? They may be able to get the top half fully assembled, top and bottom halves "hinged", with the LCD cable hanging loose waiting for a board to attach to.

Edit 3: Tickles pointed out an error of mine. 200 per day makes things MUCH better. Call it a month instead of 15 weeks for assembly. Or even EDs 300-500 per week if the team ends up being starved for boards.

I'm, like, the third to last in the first batch. I can't wait for mine to come!

I thought the estimate was 100 per day (and between 4 people, 15 minutes each seems possible).Even without the boards, they do need to do some pre-assembly of the lid. That can start as of last week, so there should be some progress with that before the first of the PCBs arrive. Assuming it is November before any finished units ship, they should by then be able to get through more than 500 per week, so Xmas is still not unreachable for most of the people waiting.

The boards are being held up because of the analog nubs.

Probably here, but it was 200 per DAY, not per week. Of course this is with everything prepared, but it should mean a large chunk of batch one is built pretty rapidly.

Regarding board production, ED's guess was 300-500 per week.

That doesn't prevent the casework/lid assembly, and I thought Craig had explained once that that was non-trivial, accounting for maybe 50% of the build time. I agree that the boards are a minimum of 2 weeks out, but there is probably 2 weeks of work that could be done without them. Of course, if boards are still limited to 500 per week, that is a bottleneck (but there are 1000 boards now waiting for nubs)

so if everything goes well and OPT makes 200 units per day, then there will be a chance that the first 1000+ of the 2nd batch units will make it before Christmas, right? ^_^

I suppose it depends how many boards are at the factory just waiting for nubs. If it's say, for arguments sake, 1000 then Craig and his Umpa Lumpas should get though them in about five working days and be waiting for the next shipment of boards. If ED's estimation is accurate, and the factory can make 300-500 per week, then I would guess that that's the rate they're likely to build them at from that point on.

Anyway, my answer to your question is: sorry, I don't work here so I don't know :p
