The sad thing is that we are such a small community that there's really no business in it. The tablets and phones have sort of pushed the handheld as a gaming/app platform into non-existence. The handheld gaming side is already taken by the Big N and Sony. Those devices aren't open and never will be. It's all about the money, and the software is the money to keep these devices moving. GPH were trying to make money off of the systems. The idea of it being open was the great thing about it. However now it seems that more and more people want to make something and sell it. That's great for them, it's a shitty economy and should deserve money for their hard work. Why make something for nothing when you can just make it and throw it up on an app store. It's the phone/tablet market that has killed the dying open source platform.

The thing is, there is a market for these things, there's a money-rich market even, but that means targetting the geek.

oh yeah, you talk about the caanoo that it's almost dead...
and the pissdora? will be sell more 2000/3000 units? it will be a miracle if they reach the 200 units for 3/4 mounths.. ah ah ah :D , i think the last possibility for this market is: GPH resurrext with new console... or we left to play angry birds on android
Ok, to get back on topic then!

GPH have (apparently) evaluated their business arms and decided that software (FunGP, those Wiz Games that never came out, et al) makes more money than their hardware division (which failed to launch, say, the wifi dongle for Wiz). This means that effectively GPH will very rapidly disappear, and their latest - the Caanoo - is now a finite commodity with no more to be produced. So what does that leave in terms of Open Hardware handhelds?

There's the Dingoo, which has had very little in the way of recent updates though does appear to have a thriving scene.
There's the Pandora which is currently undergoing some financial troubles and may fail yet.

There are various other devices that probably won't interest us as a community - the Ben Nanonote gets little love in these parts, and the Raspberry Pi is yet to launch. I can't think of any others.

So, given that GPH have stepped down, what else is there for our community?

Given that it seems from news so far available that Canoe production has ceased, I'd say the device is taking its last breath - it's a shame, as it would only need minor modifications to the case to be pretty much perfect. And if GPH are truly concentrating on software and discontinuing their hardware division then it's unlikely that they'll release a new one. If they do, I'll be one of the first to buy it.

Pandora has already sold (and delivered) more than 2000 units, by the way. Sorry if that upsets you.

Prooflink?
Considering as for October 2010 there was over 12k of caanoo already produced, I doubt that all is bad =D

Just curious what is your estimate based on?

It does seem there will be caanoo at cheap rates for as long as the supply lasts. But after that it could be grim, and even more grim depending what happens this year with pandora.

Cheer up buddy, we'll know pretty soon whether or not the Pandora makes it, and if it doesn't it won't be because of a lack of a market but because of all the shit that happened these last few years.

There definitely is a market for linux based handhelds, geeks got money, you just need to wet their appetites in the proper way ;)

Im fine ;-) Im just giving an outlook on the worst that could happen. I do expect that pandora will have a more successful and consistent production run on the new facility.
My point behind giving that grim outlook, is to cause those that came to conclusion to support gph and be critical of the pandora. GPH is done, they may come back with a open source device, but i wouldnt expect it for years. So if your truly here to support open source devices, pandora is it. If it fails we wont see any new hardware for some time to come, if at all.

Well I waited till today to do a preorder because I like dealing with people & companies whom I can reach in case they rip me off (*Evil*) :p j/k
I did do a preorder though because frankly, past dealings with ED (however limited they were) have always been pleasant and the things he's been doing lately do seem feasible to me (also, 10€ is peanuts).

I didn't order one in the beginning just because of past experiences in niche markets (ex-amigan here, seen plenty of things crash & burn) but for the first time in a while now I'm actually pretty confident in the project.

But you're right, whether you are a GPH fan or an OP fan, it doesn't matter, the market is limited, support what's out there.

That's your point, not mine.

1) Mysterious GPH is mysterious. They could asked bad lizard to be silent as always.
2) The R480 is two weeks away from public release, and it shall become true dingoo a320 legacy soon.

With upcomming great pissdora fail, all will only spice up, so It is time to inventory popcorn and romz.

Poor quasist, living in denial. Thinks GPH is going to do another handheld while calling Pandora a failure..

Not to mention, believes in that utter pipedream that is the nD.

My point was said with sarcasm in mind, to show the fallacy in your thinking.

1) Highly doubt it, people have been fired, and all the facts we do know do not go along with this.
2) Havnt heard of this, thats good theres something else out there.
Found this: http://dingoo-scene....-dingux-os.html
Doesn't seem too exciting, looks like no dedicated gpu (or they didnt use it). Quasist you have any more hard details on the hw?
Dingoo never really did anything for me, but if theres nothing else, then theres not much option.
