Questions Before The Purchase Of A Wiz

Hello everyone! I'm here today to ask a few questions that I had while lurking around this forum, as I may be purchasing a WiZ (or potentially a Caanoo) soon.

-How widespread are the screen problems/pixel-plague?

-Is bricking a WiZ really that easy?

-How easily do buttons wear out?

-Would I be better off going with a Caanoo or WiZ?

-Is the safest way to flash new firmware with a 2gb non-HC SD card?

Thanks to all who give insight!

Never had pixel plague (got it 2 months ago), from what I read pixe; plague occures when someone cracks the screen glass slightly

I've updated the firmware at least 5 times, no brick yet

No problems with buttons so far

Which one do you prefer, Cannoo (Larger screen, analog stick, built in USB port, double the ram but many say it's not very useful) or Wiz (OLED screen (though smaller), DPAD) Internal hardware is almost identical

I have been upgrading the firmware on my Wiz with an 8 GB SDHC card, no problems yet. (ADATA 8GB SDHC)

Awesome, thanks quite a bit Darkknight! I'm glad to hear that the problems aren't as widespread as I previously feared. :wiz:

Just been reading around the forum's so have you decided on the Wiz or Cannoo?

My decision was quite easy, I wanted the OLED screen and the DPAD. I was also impatient because the Cannoo homebrew software was not ready yet. Only thing I wish for now is that someone gets the black WIFI dongles out so I can buy one for my Wiz. Another thing I wish the Wiz had is a screen that is not sunk in to the device.

So far, I believe I may stick to the WiZ on this one, for mature emulation, a d-pad, and overall aesthetics. Hopefully I'll have no problems with my unit when Thinkgeek eventually has them back in stock :D.

Hell, if I can scrape up enough funds, I may end up with both the Caanoo and WiZ

I might as well add my experiences.

-If you crack the touch screen (or the OLED screen) the organic parts of the OLED screen will rot. Don't break your screen and you'll be fine. The screen's not even that fragile; I throw my Wiz in a pocket in my bag and nothing has happened yet.

-I'm not sure how some have been bricking theirs. The choice of SD card may have influenced something, or maybe the NAND failed.

-None of my buttons have worn out. I'd call mine broken in. Especially X and B, since I use them as B and A. I've heard that some have problems, but they seem to be rare.

-Wiz has a beautiful OLED screen, and is smaller. Caanoo is bigger, has an LCD, has a small stick (never had a Caanoo, so it might feel more like a nub on a PSP. I can't tell from looking at it), twice the amount of memory (though it's slower), and the accelerometer. The Caanoo is in its infancy, so Wiz software may be better (Wiz also has whatever works on GINGE such as Cave Story) for now, but I don't doubt that Caanoo will catch up.

-I use a 16gb HC SD Card, and I've flashed about 15 times. It doesn't not work, so I guess it's okay.

Thank you very much for your post Reo! I'm glad to hear that many of the problems others have had are usually due to mishandling or overall incompetence (when it comes to firmware updates). Looks like I'll be waiting for Thinkgeek to restock with the WiZ! (Or just order with courier service from play-asia  )

O yea, I have seen the inside of the Wiz before, that piece of glass is at least 1 cm thick. It probably takes a lot more then you think to break it.

I got my wiz a week or 2 ago, couldn't be happier so far!

No screen problems, i keep mine in a sock when im throwing it in my bag,

I've flashed dozens on times(yes i messed with it alot) and no bricking. (keep it plugged in when doing so)

Buttons feel good to me, little fidgity to get used to but nice and compact.

I'd go wiz for the D-Pad, nub stick wouldnt feel right for old school games i think.

I flash with a 2GB non HC card and have a 16GB HC for keeping my files all on.

Where are you ordering it to? if your in europe u can get it from germany here for 125 EUR and you get a booster pack with it. Cheapest I found, delivery was about 4-5 days.

For anyone interested you can get a 16GB HC class 10 card here in the UK for just under £16 which is a bargain! other places sell it for £32.

Let us know what you choose! :) Good Luck

Wow, it's actually much thicker than I would've expected; it must take quite a bit of effort to actually break the thing!

And on the plus side, I've yet to break a screen or drop severely any other handheld console that I've owned, so the WiZ shouldn't be a problem :p

Thanks for the good luck wishes, and I'm also extremely glad to hear that there have been plenty of good-fortune occurrences with the WiZ. Looks like ThinkGeek and Play-Asia have it in stock once again, so I'll be attempting to order one soon! :D :wiz:
