About Replacement Styli

I have a question regarding the inner part of the stylus, Elton...

In ED's latest video, he's using the stylus and the inner part is flexing quite a lot. Is this how it's going to be in the final product, or is it going to be rigid?

what is the link of the video? And at which part of the video that you find the inner part of the Xstylus is weak.

I need to know that so I can explain to you accordingly. Thanks.

Heres the video of ED's that -Tj- is referencing, your nice invention is showcased at the start

Any likely time when these may make MP and become available?

@Chaser No, what -Tj- meant is the latest video which Win 3.1 is demonstrated. However, thank you for your help.

@Tj the prototype displayed in the video is made of a material specially design for rapid prototype, which is softer than the REAL material that will be used for manufacturing. On top of that, the inner part of the Xstylus is designed to be thinner than the outer body, in exchange for a stronger outer body. That's because we have studied how human beings hold pen and found the finger grip area needs more strength than any other part. On the other hand, as long as the web of our hand is touching to the body of the pen, the pen can be hold comfortably.

Anyway, thank you for your question. I am sure a lot of Pandora fans have the same question after watching the video. Now, I just answer all their questions at once.

Oh thats cool, sorry for the error I thought ED had stopped with videos already (has now) so I'd missed that one.

He stopped with daily videos. He will still occasionally make a new video whenever he has time and something cool to show.

After multiple entries and removals, though, it loosened up quite nice.

With my dirty mind this early in the morning, I lol'ed as it reminded me of when I was much younger...

Back to topic, if the Pandora stylus is like the NDS one, that would be fine I guess, while I still prefer the one in my Dell Axim X3 as it just feels more ergonomic I guess. I am curious about that new one that was made by one of the forum members. Think that would be interesting to try (X stylus or something?)

Totally agree with you that the Dell Axim X3 stylus is a good if not the best stylus for small PDA.
However, with a pre-defined tiny pen slot like the one NDS or Pandora has, the best bet you have is Xstylus.

Thanks for the reply. Apologies for the late response; it's been busy at work and I'd been too tired to keep up with the forums, but yes, you got the video right. :)

I kinda figured it might have been the prototype material, but I had to ask, just in case. I'm working on some prototype stuff myself, and one of the materials used for durability is also the most flexible. I'm almost wondering if it's the same stuff you're using. :D

What's the status on these Styli? I'd definitely be interested in some. Do they have a price point yet? When will they be available?

More to the point, does it seem likely that I'd be able to order one direct from OPT, and still have it arrive when my Pandora does, or is it more likely to go the way of the TV cable - to be shipped at some (unknown) later date?

@TJ The material that I am using is called SLS (I have no idea what does it stand for)

@Benji Sorry for not be able to get back to you sooner. Please believe, I am doing all sort of thing to make sure Xstylus works and available for your Open Pandora ASAP. Last week, I finally received a mail from ED and he said my quotation is accepted. The only question is WHEN. Since it takes time for my factory to build mould and manufacture the pen itself, I suggest ED to start a early bird pre order for the pen. If we are lucky, the pen may be able to ship together with the console and save you guys shipping cost. What do you think?? May be you can support my idea by talk to ED.

@Everybody Other than creating a Xstylus for Open Pandora, I have also been working on Xstylus for Nintendo DS Lite game console. I just started a fund raising project for a Nintendo DS Lite Xstylus on kickstarter.com. Here is the link, http://kck.st/XStylusNDSL . If you find Xstylus is cool, please kindly share it with your friend on FB or twitter. :)

In case you don't about kickstarter.com, it is a fund raising website for people to gather enough funding, so that a project can be started. Its fund raising model is all or nothing, means that backer doesn't have to pay until the target is reached within a fixed period of time.

This sounds win-win for all those that have already received their Pandoras and want the Xstylus to match. Afterall we are all dearly missing something to wait Two Months for, so whats the projected lead time (give or take a volcano or two)? ;)

Kickstarter.com sounds interesting and perhaps could be used for Pandora2 if profits (god forbid, this was supposed to be about community Linux geeks making a cheap as hell machine at a loss, for everyone and their patient goat, in their spare time for 'fun' only) from Pandora 1, aren't sufficient to make Pandora 2 a non-preorder affair.

I'm of course jesting and I am glad to hear things are progressing for your novel product. Look forward to placing a pre-order and will look to a kickstart donation when the wife isnt looking.

4 days to go and not even halfway there. I don't think this is going to happen :(

I kinda got the impression that that was for DS Lite only, and a separate Pandora project might happen.

The Pandora project definitely won't happen if he can't get the funds for the DS project to begin with.

@Zoxc, XStylus for DS lite and Pandora models are indeed two separate projects. The success or failure of one shouldn't affect the other one. Thank you for coming back to this thread and ask about the XStylus for Pandora. Believe it or not, we have NOT receive any further reply from ED or the team since ED accepted my quotation. My suggestion to start a pre order for the XStylus, so I can start the working on the mould earlier and hopefully you guys don't have to have another long wait for it, has not been approved yet.

I am the one who love to see this project get going, but I am the one with least say in it. But as a user, your voice is very powerful, if you want to see this happens, please shoot ED an email/message to notice him your concern on the XStylus pre order.

Sorry, but I'm curious. How are they not related? If you can't get the $10'000 for a run for the DS, a console that counts in millions, how are you going to get it for the Pandora with only a few thousand units? You have an amazing product and I really want it to succeed and can't figure out how it is not garnering massive attention, but it stands to reason that if the huge DS market has only gained support of 32 people, I don't see how even our close knit forums can get more than a few hundred optimistically. :(

I could see it happening if XStylus became the default for Pandora, but I doubt OpenPandora has the budget for that at the moment.

@WizardStan The design of the two styluses are different. Even if I can get one set of mould funded, I can't get it to produce the other model. I am too disappointed about the about the XStylus for NDS Lite is not doing well on Kickstarter. We have done all the things we could to promote the XStylus, we sent out all the available prototypes out to websites that promised to do review on it. But the result is not good, only 3 reviews are published, as a result many NDS Lite owners did not know about the XStylus. I am not blaming anyone for this outcome, we should have started the Kickstarter project earlier, may be last summer when the 3DS is still a rumor.

@Zoxc Regarding to the XStylus for Pandora, it will be sell through the Pandora website as an official good. I am offering it to the team in a big lot quantity in a low low price that I can't disclose. I look at the deal as my little contribution to the wonderful Pandora gaming society.

As we have learnt the mainstream are interested in talking about on the hot stuff only, I know we can’t fight with it. So I bought myself a 3DS and created a 3DS XStylus. Compare to the Pandora and NDS Lite, the 3DS one is really hard to design because of its length, but we have found the right material to use and the result is very satisfying. The best thing is, this new pen, 3DS XStylus actually works well with the old NDS Lite! we have opened a page on facebook to gather suggestions from 3DS lovers. If we saw enough support, we may do the Kickstarter thing for it.

Here is the Facebook link: http://on.fb.me/gogreenbulb

For those who doesn't use Facebook, here are some pic of the 3DS XStylus:

We've got fantastic news that the XStylus for 3DS fits perfectly in the pen slot of the Nintendo DSL!
