The One Nub Club

i ordered one of the set of five off ebay while i wait for my two nubber to arrive, which is fine as i am mainly interested in pre-ps1/n64 anyway.
seems the left nub is faulty but can occasionally be coaxed into working ok.

it'd be nice to have some sort of visual calibration routine for the nubs and dpad

It has a slightly different feel to it though. Maybe that was the reason for disapproving it. It feels a bit weak to one side.
ED said it was a problem to do with tolerances. My guess is that the bad nubs do not make contact between the sensor element and the button in the exact centre. My faulty nub feels ever so slightly looser in the dead-zone, and it could be as little as 0.1mm in the part being at fault. At the moment, I'm happy with it as it is, for mouse button use.

It would be nice to get a replacement, but it seems reasonable that there are hundreds of other tasks more important than selling spare nubs (with all the nubs currently in the US, and no good knowledge of if they are being successful at screening out the bad ones)

Guess who just joined the club. It's been shipped!

So, I felt obligated to spam the boards with this message. :D

may I join, too ?

although I have received just a 0.5-nub-pandora, because the left nub is dead and the right knows only two directions ...
but I don't care, I use this one for tweaking and devoloping anyway.

greetings

They will probably help the one nub/no nub guys eventually after at least the first batch has shipped.

Ultimately, we've all payed the same price for these things (per unit price),and we all have respect for everyone's place in line.

One of the games I'm writing for this handheld, is a dual stick shooter - it would suck if there is still people from batch one, who can't play games like it- once all of the first batch units have been shipped.

If you can afford to be patient- let the guys deal with the rest of the first batchers, and hopefully they can maybe allow the one nubbers to send the handhelds back to the nub factory to get your units fixed, or ED and Mweston can offer there services. Just as long as the guys don't spread themselves to thin.

My left nub is perfect, but my right one is faulty when I boot. However, when i turn it in circles about 15 times, it works like a charm. It just needs some extra calibration I guess. Playing Quake2 last night with both nubs went without any issues.

I bit the bullet and when for a one nub ....I took the risk even though my pandora would of probably been here in a couple of weeks as i was 650 on craigs list. Got My pandora yesterday and i guess i was lucky as both seem to be working.left nub perfect...... right nub just needed some loosning and its perfect ....woohoo !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I joined last week friday already but didn't have much time yet for my one-nubber. Mine is actually broken in hardware it seems, as it can't be fixed by resetting the nub and you feel some resistance under the left nub.
This is a pure development machine though at the moment and thanks again to ED for offering me to skip the queue with this one :)

If you didn't need it for development, it may well be fixable - sounds like there is some swarf stuck in the innards. Probably best not try and 'loosen' it from outside (except some compressed air), you might shred the rubber!

I got one of those no-nubbers craig offered some weeks ago. When it arrived, the left nub was totally dead while the right only did move left and right. Today I found the time to check them by removing them from the PCB and disassembling (it's no problem with the proper equipment). Interestingly, I figured out that both problems were caused by broken paths on the nub's litte PCBs. For the left one, one of the paths on the back of the PCB was broken at two points (could be seen when looking closely). I fixed it with a very thin wire and some isolation tape on top of it, this nub is now working fine. For the right one, one of the four little squares which are "touched" by the inner nub was not properly connected to the path next to it. I could not fix this because any soldering on this square would prevent the inner nub from working properly, so I will need a replacement nub once it's available.

However, I guess my nubs are not the only ones with those PCB problems, so if your nubs do not work at all or some directions do not work it might be a good idea just to check the connections on the PCB.

Standard disclaimer should apply here: desoldering can be very challenging and shouldn't be attempted unless you've had a lot of practice. And opening your Pandora does actually void your warranty, so if you want to be able to return it in the future you may want to hold off on opening it up.

Can I join your club? At least for a week or two until I send my Pandora back for repair.

The left nub on my Pandora broke yesterday. Just wondering if any of you one nub guys has been able to remap buttons for mouseclicks? Pref the shoulder buttons. Tried asking for a guide in 'I need help' but got nowhere.

If not, guess I'll have to stick with the bluetooth mouse.

I am now also in the unvouluntary one nub club, my left nub is borked, doesnt centre anymore but it is still calibratable it justs always drifts.

Will send my pandora back at the end of the month.

sorry to hear that - another with initially good nubs which have gone bad

i know the team is positive and has given some very promising statements about the nub situation (and i'm really hoping it turns out that way), but i can't help but feel a tad apprehensive - won't nubs which are initially good, which go bad later, still pass the new QA regime?? Aren't there already thousands made? Without them all being thrown out and re-made, how can there be assurances that nubs which work fine to start with won't die shortly thereafter?

reassuring replies would be welcome :D

cheers, simon

As far as we know so far, the problems were tolerance issues - so while the nubs might work at first, they might've suffered the tolerance issue and become bad while using them.
The company doesn't do a simple function check, they check the inside of the nubs themselves to see if there are any tolerance issues.

Why some from the tested ones might still fail after a while, it shouldn't be many and the newly produced ones will be done in better quality.

Sooner or later.....everybody will join the one-nub-club........moohahahahaha

Kidding. hope you get your Pandora's fixed soon.

Arrrgh, who wants to form the no-nub club? My one working nub, the left one, has just broken on my Pandora, it is no longer centering itself. Hope the nubs go on sale soon, I opened it up already so I don't think I have a warranty anymore. Guess I'm stuck with the touchscreen and dpad only games for now. :(

Edit: OK, now it's worse, first it was just drifting, now it doesn't work at all. This seems like that tolerance issue.
Edit (again): After a reboot and spending 10 minutes looking for my stylus it's back to drifting.

I've just joined the club, bought Polossatik's one nubber :)
I guess that means Polossatik left the club :p

Probably keeping my batch 2 preorder, and if I can fix the one nubber possibly give it away as a gift once I get the batch 2 Pandora, otherwise sell it on eBay.

Cleaning broken nubs does not always help. I've had to swap my nubs (because I wanted the left one to be working). So think twice before opening your Pandora (and loosing warranty).
Just FYI.
