I've just ordered a dingoo. I've had a GP32 for years and have been waiting patiently for my Pandora since 4 hours into the pre ordering process but I thought I'd get a dingoo for a bit of fun. Also I'll be less worried about breaking it than the Pandora.

So my question is. As there are no sticky threads can you guys please point me a few interesting and/or useful threads? My interests are many and varied. Video, audio, retro gaming old computers, you name it, so if you found a particular thread informative please link it here. You never know maybe we'll end up getting this thread stickied :)

Cheers

Well, if you are looking for Dingoo-specific help...I can help if you have specific questions, but this is not really a very Dingoo-intensive board, you might try Dingoonity, look it up on Google...I'm over there, too.

Actually, I think it is rather nice of Admin here to provide even a small space where we CAN talk about the Dingoo here, as it's a competing product with the Wiz. SO...what specific questions did you have?

I'll try to help with anything I can, Dingoo-related...my skillz are fairly good with a Dingoo.

Well I'm not sure ;) I'll go have a look round the Dingoonity boards (love that name) and by then I'll probably be able to answer my own questions. If not then I may take you up on your offer.

True enough...

But the website is called gp32x.de after all! :)

I'm also glad that us few dingoo users get to share space here too. I had a GP32 a few years ago and it's good to be posting back on the old forum!
I may get a pandora - but I won't be in the first batch and until the pandora gets a bit mature the dingoo is a great distraction!

Well I've had a trawl around Dingoonity and this little handheld is going to be great fun :) I've already downloaded a shedload of native emulators and a custom firmware ready for when the little fellow arrives. I'll probably only have a stock dingoo for a few hours, or even a few minutes ;) I'm sure Dingux is on the cards soon too.

I never got this enthused by the GP2X, that's why I didn't get one. The Dingoo however has always been something I wanted to know more about but kept resisting the urge to check it our because of my Pandora pre order.

It looks to me like the Dingoo will complement the Pandora perfectly as a go anywhere at all handheld whilst still offering a pocket load of fun.

If someone wants to collect all the relevant info into one post, I don't have a problem making it a sticky.

Well.. As a token gesture at trying to drag this thread back on topic...

Native Dingoo stuff

When I first got the dingoo I played some nes and gba games then I downloaded the update pack for native emulators:

here it is:

http://boards.dingoonity.org/dingoo-games-and-homebrew/dingoo-mega-pack-1-0/

At the time this made my emulators completely up to date and gave me a few more games to try out.

Since then there has been an update for Proosystem (the atari 7800 emulator)

which you can get here: http://www.portabledev.com/files/filedwnld.php?file=proosystemV20.zip

And having been shocked with how badly the Megadrive emulator ran Sonic (Well.. it's okay so long as sonic doesn't move!) I updated it:

with this: http://www.mediafire.com/?yyrglymwwyw

I think that has updated most of the native firmware emulators although there is probably something I've missed!

Dingux

So my second evening with the dingoo was spent trying to install Dingux.

Basically there were 2 parts to it:

1) Install the firmware
2) Have an SD card with a bootable linux image on it.

The first part was a bit of a pain to be honest. I downloaded the complete idiots guide to installing dingux.

Windows : http://www.dingoo-scene.com/TheCompleteidiotsGuidetoDinguxWindoze.htm

and Booboo's dual boot installer

http://dingoo-linux.googlecode.com/files/dual_boot_installer_20090916.zip

The only part of idiot-guide I actually needed was section A (Flashing the firmware) - I just did what it said! (You need to find out what sort of screen you have and flash the right version)

So I ran the commands just like it told me with the dingoo in usb mode (switch on while holding B ) and ... nothing happened. The command line looked as though it had worked but my Dingoo remained dead and didn't start running the flashing tool.

I tried this loads of times with the same result, then I found booboo's comment somewhere on the web about pulling the USB out of the dingoo just as the commands had finished running. I kept trying this in various ways for about 20 minutes until finally the dingoo screen came to life. I was then able to finally flash the firmware. It seems that some of the newer dingoo's have a problem running the flasher program and I was lucky enough to own one of them. Still you only have to get it to run once!

The second part was/is easy! I Just downloaded an up to date version of the local pack that included all the emulators I could ever have wished for and unpacked it to the root of my fat32 formatted SD card. (I'm using a microSD card with a converter so it fits the mini-SD slot of the dingoo BTW).

Right now I'm using this local pack: http://boards.dingoonity.org/dingux-games-and-homebrew/dingux-local-pack-v0-31/

(it's actually version 0.34 Beta - ignore what it says in the link!)

I then needed to rename the correct zimage file (again it has to match your dingoo's screen type) in the route of the card to just 'zimage' all lower case.

From this point on Dingux booted whenever I started my Dingoo while holding select.

Since then there's been a lot of playing games and copying stuff onto my dingoo! It's really bringing back some happy GP32 memories to me so I hope it does for BaDToaD as well...

Nice post thingley. Plenty of stuff to get me started there :) All I need is the hardware now LOL.

Funny you mention the GP32 but somehow the Dingoo seem more in the spirit of the GP32 than either the GP2X or Wiz to me. Perhaps I'm imagining it but that's how it feels :)

Didn't say it was.
BUT, you have to admit that the Wiz is the main object of discussion intended for this particular website!

That said, I'm glad of this small space here where we can talk about the dingoo. And I hope Toad very much enjoys his...as much as I enjoy mine (I own 4 Dingoos)

I'm next looking at getting a Wiz or two...and a Pandora. I like my toys, what can I say?

I also want a DROID.

Just got a GPS for X-mas. that was another thing on my "want" list for quite some time...a GPS. Like I said, i like my toys.

AFAIR the site was originally set up for news and discussion on the GP32 and GP2X consoles. Pandora discussion started on this site long before Wiz. I don't know which section is the busiest (certainly not the Dingoo section!) though my gut instinct says it's the Pandora section - maybe that instinct is just because it's the only forum I regularly visit. Anyway it's certainly not a Wiz-centric site.

Again, I did not say that it was, necessarily...but the name of the forum, and it's URL would seem to indicate that that was the original intent!

It's the Pandora section by a factor of about ten. Unfortunately, the signal-to-noise ratio there is about 1/10th that of the other sections, so it sort of balances out.

Lotta folks out there, like me, who think the Pandora isn't ever going to come out...so why yammer on about it?
You can be sure that, if it DOES finally come out, I'll then put my name on a list to get one...but I'm not dropping a dime until there's a physical machine available.

Hi Kalisiin,

I have faith in the Pandora project and I'm sure it will soon be released. You're new to these forums and I can understand your concerns re the Pandora. Some of us have been here for years and have had many dealings with Craig and ED. They are both very intelligent, very capable guys. They have helped build this community from it's early days. They are both enthusiasts of retro gaming and open source as much as we are. M Weston is a clever designer. What better team could you ask for?

I have never believed the OP team are out to scam people and I believe they are intelligent and resourceful enough to ride out any storms and problems that arise. Plenty of businesses went under during and since the credit crunch. The fact that OP are still around and ED and Craig are still running their businesses is proof of their abilities.

Craig is a very generous guy. I can remember a couple of years ago when he was having a clear out at GBAX he came across a boxful of GP32 games. Rather than sell them on ebay he gave them free to regular forum members. He shipped them out for free too! I was sent 3 games.

That kind of attitude towards the community and the genuine passion he has for the Pandora and retro gaming and handhelds in general is one of the main reasons I was happy to support the Pandora project by pre ordering. Couple that with the decision to involve the community at all stages of the design of the Pandora and you really have one unique project that I am proud to be associated with in my own small way.

Well, you have your perspective, I have mine.
I have seen nothing out of Pandora but one delay after another.

I'll be happy to buy one, when one is available. I'd like to have one.

But I'm not dropping a dime until there is a physical machine available. There have been far too many "delays", far too many promised release dates that have been followed by more delays...not the sort of thing that inspires faith in my heart, or my head.

I don't mean to knock on anyone...especially not people you hold in high regard. But, at the same time...I just have a real hard time having faith in any project that has seen such repeated delays.
