Some game platforms (Wii, XboX360) have common avatar for games. Is there any free (libre) alternative to this lack in the FOSS gaming world? It whould be pretty interesting, 2D or 3D. Pandora interface would be nicer with one thing of this, eh?

(Pandora aside)

I've got a 360, but no Wii; it seems to me the avatar system is very underused -- on the 360 I see it virtually, never, aside from when its shown beside My Xbox type panels, or perhaps the once in a blue moon when I play 1-vs-100 and it shows the many avatars. No games you buy use the avatars for anything .. perhaps a couple XBLA indie games do, but none that I've purchased. My wife could spend hours dressing her avatar I suppose..

ie: Since game data is associated to the account, so when you hit Load Game it only shows your games, theres not a lot of need for avatars to differentiate anything.

But I agree, I want them more pervasive, and even cross-system .. you want the same avatar from Facebook to Xbox to gp32x, but its just not gonna happen for awhile :)

The studio I work for developed Scene It: Box Office Smash, which was one of the first commercial Xbox 360 games to use avatars, and we are working on more soon-to-be-announced titles that use them.

It seems the main problem with avatars so far is that they aren't allowed in Teen or Mature rated titles (only E) - which really puts a damper on making them a standard / used widely. If someone were to develop a Pandora avatar system early enough in the system's life cycle I could really see it being adopted by the community. Thoughts?

You've hit the nail on the head, the 360 avatar system came in late in the game which meant most games couldnt find a use for it. Though the question is are there many mature games that have the need for an avatar? I can imagine games like Resident Evil, Banjo Kazooie, etc dont really have a need for an Avatar, maybe for a multiplayer mode but that's it, which I think explains the low use. There seems to be a lot more mini game focused games on the Wii therefore there is more use of the avatar system created on the Wii.

This is sorta freaky, I was thinking about the same thing, but a bit different... Avatars that are half real, half not. Like, I copy and past my eyes, ears, nose, etc. onto a head. The trouble is, the contrast between real and fake is kinda alarming. Perhaps we could make them more cartoony?
I still think it'd be pretty cool.

But isn't a networked gaming community the basis for avatars? That is, the ability to play games and communicate with other people? Steam has that integrated in its system. It doesn't really have avatars, but it does have profiles, chat, voice chat, not to mention game invites, etc.

really dont see any point in avatars except to link our consoles to our gp32x/appstore account

Well wouldn't it be cool to be able to play with your avatar ingame?
Oh, and about using real parts as sprites, I got started with an eye:
