Pandora Cold

I'm gonna assume Craigx and Co are using commercial grade component. Such Electronics themselves are generally listed for no lower then 0 C. That doesn't mean they won't function, they're just not guaranteed to function at such temperatures. Industrial Grade components would probably fit the ticket, but such LCDs are rather expensive. Finally, I don't think they can get access to Military Grade Components.
"Not functioning", ok. I won't likely be turning it on and using it in temperatures below freezing. I'm just wondering if it could survive temporary exposure while turned off. i.e. let's say I'm camping somewhere and the temperature at night goes below freezing... it happens sometimes. Would it likely work ok if I just warm it up again before turning it on?

Oh, and zxcel, those are pretty much the winter temperatures in Toronto, which is in the very south of Canada. It's probably a few degrees warmer in "real" temperature, but we get lots of wind from the lake so it often feels 10 degrees colder than it really is. :)

Last night I tried to find the operating temperatures for a PSP, by way of comparison. I couldn't find anything easily -I'm not saying the info isn't out there but it is not easy to find. Memory Stick cards seem to quote -13F, which I think is -26C.

Military grade components yay! ParaPanda.

Really that only depends on the LCD, but for the most part it shouldn't be a problem. Anyone have an Archos 605 box to check what temperatures it is rated for? Most of the components should operate normally as long as they are warmed back up. The only exception to this could be the LCD. If the temperatures drop too low the liquid can crystallize and exert a force that could actually a.) break the screen or b.) cause dead pixels. Honestly, I would assume it should be fine because across the US you can find a whole slew of temp ranges and these manufacturers understand this.

Hi, Esn! It seems that guys from California will nether understand us :)
nubie says that "MWeston lives in Canada, I am pretty sure he wants to use his Pandora", so we can hope:)

Usually LCD don't cause any troubles. Most types of accumulators don't like if temperature is too low or too high, but it is unavoidable.
I think, main dangers are
1) connections between different materials (different types of plastics, plastic and steel, etc)
2) LCD cable, other cables (if they are exist)
3) movable parts

At temperatures as low as -10C (anything lower and I take the bus) my PSP has a "streaky" screen: ie, movement is very blurred. But as soon as it's warm again, it goes back to normal. I can't imagine the Pandora having any greater problems beyond that.

And to think I was mocked by all of you for the USB handwarmer. Who's laughing now when my hands are warm enough to play Abuse while yours are practically black and falling off. :p

The Pandora uses an LTPS LCD panel, which are commonly rated for a lowest temperature of about -15C to -20C a highest of about 60C. It's pushing it, but it should probably be able to withstand the cold if you just keep it in a warm pocket most of the time. Regular opertion at that temperature is likely to damage it in large exposure.

Thank you! That's very useful information to know. So I'll consider that up to 10 below zero is safe, below that and it might be getting chancy. :)

i think the question is a valid one and needs some kind of answer,i beleve its not the open pandora .co responsability or problem if the
device fails in anything below 10c - it is however the responsibility of
the team to ensure the item is packaged better for colder countries.

i hope the pandora gets to you safely and that you dont take any risks
using the device in extreme wheather conditions, you know from the
bigger hardware companies of mobile phones and such that these devices an fail in such conditions so the pandora will not be any different.

Actually, serial thermometers (or even audio-in thermometers :p ) are easier to build :p

So baically, I won't be able to use the :pandora1: as an MP3player, 3 to 4 months a year ??
I live in Québec City, where last winter we get more than 5 meters of snow. And where the morning are cold (-35 is not that unusual).
I'm able to use my phone as player (in my pocket) I hoped that I willl be able too with my pand' :(

And no, did't think about playing while waiting the bus in the middle of a snow-storm.... I's not that praticable with glove :)

Jeez, thats cold - I couldn't think at those temperatures never mind use an mp3 player. I think we had 6 meters of snow here last winter - that was length-wise not height-wise though.

You'll probably be able to use the pandora in the come conditions an iphone or ipod or archos could bear. So if these commercial devices doesn't work for 3 / 4 months a year because of cold where you live, it's going to be the same with the pandora. Same kind of electronic components are used... Seems quite logical...

Relax! Just keep it on the inside rather than on the outside of your winter coat, and it will be perfectly fine. I very much doubt that you walk around each day in temperatures below -15C on any part of your body except your face or sometimes hands.

Keeping it warm makes sense anyway, because cold temperatures drain batteries very quickly.
