Hi folks!

Continued to work on the renders (as promised).
Changed the lights, the material of the analogue nubs and made the PowerLED big enough to be seen when the lid is closed.

Then I created an SD Card and a 3,5" disk as size comparison right next to the Pandora :)

This is the result:

(Note: This render is in actual Pandora Resoluten: 800x480. Yep, the Pandora is THAT detailed)

Furthermore, I created soms Hi-Res-Render, which you can download here

Enjoy :)

More renderings to come :)

All it needs is a chilled bottle of wine and a roaring fire, and maybe a bearskin rug. Looks good!

To be honest, I'm still not keen on the design.

Sorry if this is not the right topic, but I'm gonna kinda rant:

If the system has a touchscreen it's kinda useless since it's in a clamshell design that can't be turned to be outside, also even if it was, well it wouldn't have even the D-Pad or X, Y, A, B acessible.

Also the ergonomy, it's clearly trying to be a "jack of all trades, master of none", a keyboard is nice, but the one in there is neither visually appeasing or in a totally right position, I mean, I have to acess to the joysticks who are actually conditioned to the upper part of the console due to the keyboard being in the lower part? both are getting conditioned and limited in functionality/position.

It's neither good for the 2 joysticks, nor is it for the keyboard, IMO; and if we are going to do something 100% satisfiynd for either, I think one should go... and should be the keyboard; or at least made optional through a acessory or something.

a screen keyboard would be fine, either normal or even the origami method:

Design principles like these:

Applied to a game console (that is, D-pads and X, Y, A, B on the sides) would be so much better.

I'm aware that this might be a little blunt to say now, but I think it's best said now than afterwards.

EDIT: this one is a perfect aproach regarding exterior look: (keyboard is questionable)

EDIT2: due to request, doesn't scretch the screen for me, but hope I figured what the green monster was (figured it was the bigger picture, and therefore reduced it to the resolution of the others, 400px width)

@pedrocasilva - can you please remove the image with the green monster? It stretches the entire page horizontally for no good reason.

The new render looks very nice and more like an actual device than just a prototype. The only change I would do is make the border around the screen black. I'm not sure if right now it's chromed or just light-coloured, but the screen itself will stand out enough without the need of a thick bright border.

Again, very nice job, the best Pandora imagery I've seen so far :)

pedrocasilva - The designs you demonstrate are patented. Also the Pandora is not a UMPC.
I'm not saying to clone it; just saying the direction we are taking is not the best; making something similar would probably not be a problem since these 3 examples go towards the same.

A gadget is something that has to be desirable through it's design above functionality (iphone, Sony Vaio thingy, etc)... and we are clearly trying to stuff as many functionality in there as we can... but it's not working the best it can together; feels anarquic, forced even.

GP2X for example is quite sleek for what it is, but this sadly doesn't come as so, yet; so my reaction is saying that instead of finalizing they could fine tune (and perhaps even rethink it a little); but of course wether I'm heard or not is up to them.

a screen keyboard would be fine, either normal or even the origami method:

The current design is very good, though the volume knob needs to be recessed enough that it can't be easily bumped by the palm of your hand.

For the joysticks. The Pandora isn't much bigger than DS, so I picked up my ds and held it how I'd likely hold a pandora. My thumbs oddly enough fell into the exact place where the joysticks would go. Though when holding lit like that the L/R buttons might be a tad harder to press depending on how they're designed. On the other hand my fingertips wrap around so they could easily press two inner L/R buttons. But I think I read there's not enough room internally for the buttons there?

And for a screen keyboard. Pandora's screen is tiny, it'd be very hard typing with fingers on the screen, so you'd have to use a stylus. That would frankly be much slower than using two thumbs on Pandora's current keyboard. Put it on a desk and use fingers for even faster typing too. I'm not even sure yet if the Pandora will have a place to store a stylus.

Last minute edit: Also, as for jack of all trades, master of none. There's already devices that are specifically designed for gaming, or pda functionality, web browsing. but there's nothing out there that does EVERYTHING in such a small device. THAT is the main reason I want a Pandora. I'm sick of buying things and then barely using them because they do such a limited number of things.

I also have a DS fat, and tried it, but I really dislike where the joysticks are, feels forced compared to be in the same line with the D-pad, they'd be better a little lower, in the place where the keyboard is.

I agree that it would be too small, this said, I don't think the keyboard is that much of a better choice compared to using a stylus; firstly I wanna play, not type, so it comes of as something I really don't need.

And it's also too small to type with two hands in public places, since it's a portable, so I believe a setup where the console could be shut while the screen was turned and using a stylus to type would be a way better approach. (even if it kept that keyboard when open, or something.

Like I said, I think the console is loosing itself in fitting in 1001 capabilities versus functionality of doing every single one of them (or the most important ones) real good; it's getting lost whether it wants to be a console or a mini-laptop with joysticks, and that kinda hurts it, IMO.

It wouldn't loose capabilities, it would just earn a real vocation; that's what it's missing IMO. If they were still going to the device that does everything, I'd still say that it could all work together better than it is doing now (points at those umpc designs). The console would be so much better if the screen could be turned and the d-pad and 4 action buttons could be accessed.

Devices designed for games, as in homebrew consoles better in specs and value than Pandora? I see none.

I just think the product could be better as the packaging could be more appealing.

I am so happy with these renders, this is going to be a kick aSS handheld.

Hold one, use one, then complain.

I am glad that you have an opinion, but I am afraid that you are in a minority. I think this will be perfect, see below:

Agree, agree, agree. This is so small that pedrocasilva's concerns are without basis (unless his hands are abnormally small, like smaller than your average 8-year-olds)

+2 for the screen, it isn't big enough for thumb or finger typing (unless you want to carefully craft a stylus out of your fingernail, both gross and potentially dangerous, not that I wouldn't try it, perhaps with some glue and a cut up stylus). We are talking about 1/2 the size of some of these UMPCs.

Seriously, this is just getting better and better, and the native res of the render, pure genius.

This new render needs to replace the current white one on the wiki, as it is better in almost every respect.
Dunno who replaced the previosly-new black render with the white one, but it's done. Bluwiki has the size comparison, and Wikipedia has the high-res.

EXACTLY, we WANT a device that is a Console/mini laptop with joysticks. We have been waiting for years, and now that one is here you want to rock the boat.

You don't seem to get it, we are home. And if you want something different, MAKE it. The device is made to be hacked, open software, hardware with added hackability.

Take one of these, put it in a case of your own design, it is just that simple.

Nope, not to us.

I don't get it. No one's forcing you to type instead of playing games. But it's there for when you do want to type. Good hey? And for a take-everywhere widget like this, I much prefer the clamshell to those other designs.

Super renders, ED -- lookin' fab, she is.

I will say that the first time I saw the design I did not like it. It looked weird (different) and I thought it was trying to be too many things at once.

After thinking about it for a bit and seeing these new renders...I think the device looks awesome! I cant wait to get one and start playing with it.

I agree with others that this is a device that has been missing from the market. Hopefully, it will live up to the hype!

what about the promised view from the back of the device?
Didn't you read "more renders will follow"...?
Give me some sleep, I just had 4,5 hours ;)
