Hi everyone
It would be really cool if someone could develop some kind of art program for the GP 200 like Colours on the DS. Or maybe get Dpaint working with Touch screen? That would be so cool.......the resolution isn't far off as well (320x256 I recall)....Dpaint V had some great animation tools....what do you think?

I haven't bought a GP2x or F 200 yet. Someone gave me a DS....it's ok but it's not got a BBC Micro emulator!

Can you plug in a USB keyboard (into the cradle) and just use it with the GP2x? (and a mouse?). It would seem so...I'd love a little mini BBC....

That Craiginator sounds so promising....I do hope it gets off the ground. Imagine running Damn Small Linux on it....

I've been following the forums for months now seeing what people make of things....there is a lot of frustration over the new model. I do want to buy one...........but I might as well wait for Spring.

You know, I know it's personal but I hate the PSP design and the thumb joystick. My hand gets tired playing it. ( I don't own a PSP by the way ). The GP2x's looked really good but it doesn't seem the joystick was that good. The Ds lite is well designed...the buttons are very comfy....he clamshell design is a good thing as it protects the unit.....why didn't the designers use the buttons like the DS and add a protective screen?

Sorry to go on, but it really frustrates me - these design decisions are basic stuff that designers should know about. I know you can't please everyone....but I feel designers are making such basic errors. The placeholder for a stylus should have been included! Imagine ithe stylus when not in use swingin around on a bit of string...unforgivable  !

Sorry for my 'unforgivable' spelling ...the topic should read 'Touch Screen and Art Packages'...I couldn't edit it after...sorry about that.

I was thinking about running DPaint on the GP2x, too - it really is the most excellent pixel art program (which is what, I imagine, the kind of art the GPx is designed for) and I'd love to be able to make pixel art on it.

However, the Amiga emulator, last I heard, was pretty slow and I loathe latency in art programs, it leads to all kinds of mistakes being made. Also, wouldn't it be a pain to get the resultant lbms from the disk images you're writing to? You'd have to go to your computer and extract the files using an ADF viewer/extractor. Not too convenient when you want to get right to the images, and especially not if you don't have the right software at the time!

It would be absolutely wonderful if someone made a DPaint clone, with the awesome file handling as well. You don't know how much good palette handling means to me these days, and how rare it is. Not even PSP and Photoshop got it right. :( All wrapped up in their 32bit nightmares. Having an 8bit capable anti aliaser, and the gradients, it would be wonderful :p Don't you think? I'm wholeheartedly supporting it :D

Edit: Hmm. Didn't notice GP2xPaint before... it looks interesting! I may have to try it out.

I am such a Dpaint fan and a pixeler. Nothing was as well designed full stop. It was such a pleasure to use.
I am not impressed by Photoshop. Ok it's not a pixel paint program ...but sometimes all I want to do is a little pixel painting. Dpaint V was a milestone! Ham painting....onion skinning.....

Colours on the DS is a great little app....but it's no pixeler.

I wish I were a coder. I'd love to code Dpaint again for the Gp F200! I don't suppose it's a quick job though.

I agree with you about latency...e.t.c
The thing I like about portable games machines for art is that they are cheap, portable ( so you can doodle when you want). It's the next best thing if you can't afford a Wacom Cintix!

I'll take a look at that art program for the GPs thanks.

I still run Dpaint V now. What a great program that still is after all these years.

If you have a PC and want a d-paint clone try ProMotion. It is almost a total clone of D-paint down to the keyboard commands.

Thanks a lot. I remember seeing Pro Motion a few years ago and for some reason I didn't get on with it...going back to it though it is really good! You are right...it's very similar.....but there's something you can't put into words when using low res Amiga....maybe it's the lack of seeing windows that get's the creative juices flowing. I will muck around with ProMotion tonight...

Hi,

What about porting mtPaint to the GP2X F-200 ? It seems to be a nice pixel art Linux compatible free software with sources available, and the GP2X meets its requirements :) The only problem I can see is that it uses GTK+ toolkit, and I don't now if that set of libraries would work fine on our handheld...

Bye !

Yeh that looks like quite a good pixeller art program. I like the palette design.
Trouble is you can't help think how it might translate to a 320x240 screen....

People are doing some great pictures with their DS and Colours:

I wish there were a paint program for the GP F200....like this.......in some ways it would be better as the screen on the GPs is that much bigger.

Can I ask is there some kind of tablet /mouse emulation hack on the GP F200 UAE now? You could run Dpaint in 320x256 under UEA ( I don't know how the GP would handle that res though ?) which would negate having to write another paint package.

I must admit I did run Dpaint on a Dell Axim X50 but it wasn't easy on a small screen! That's what I like about Colours...it's not too fancy..it was designed for that size of screen.

Colours or touchscreen support for uae4all/deluxe paint would be fantastic. I have tried the current touchscreen drawing program but would love something a little more feature packed.

Too bad a D-paint clone couldn't be made for the Gp2X F200. It used to run fine at 320 x 200 (NTSC) on my Amiga. I remember doing alot at that res. It was pretty simple too.

Who's to say it can't? I've been looking up on how DPaint actually works (imbetween getting addicted to using ProMotion for all my pixel art - it's so awesome I may have to buy it) and it seems to be a simple case of getting alpha blending to work in an 8bit colour mode, mixed with simple, MSPaint-like commands, (oh, and all that anti-aliasing and filters and stuff - but that's just alpha blending too :D). The most complicated thing about Dpaint is it's palette handling! (And the best bit, actually - I can't stand colour modes over 8bit ;) )

Here I found resources on how to do 8bit alpha blending:

It doesn't seem to take up that much CPU time, so it's definitely possible. If fact, it might be possible to adapt an existing paint program to it. Important parts might include quick, dynamic zooming (you don't want to be working at 1x at all for most things :p) and quick saving.
