Started playing Civilization on the Amiga emulator last night. Had forgotton how great a game it was. Really pretty playable on UAE despite all the keyboard controls. However, I couldn't get it to save on to a blank .adf. It said it was saving, but the file wasn't there when I tried to load it the next time.

If anyone thinks I'm doing something wrong, please let me know.

Anyway, if I can't save on the Amiga emulator I was wondering what the bes alternative was.

I've not really used OutcaST much, but I understand it has savestate capabilities which would be useful. How do people find the virtual keyboard when playing Civ?

I also understand that there's a SNES version. I would imagine the controls of that version would lend themselves to the GP2x a bit better. Although I've heard it doesn't have all the same features of the Amiga and ST versions.

Are there any other versions I'm missing? Is Civ 2 playable on the Playstation emulator?

What version do you guys prefer on the 2X

I haven't played either the Amiga or ST versions on the GP2X, but I can definitely recommend the SNES version. It might well be cut down from Amiga/ST but I can't say I noticed :)

Civ2 was definitely playable a while back on psx (around april 2006). I'd highly recommend it as it's also optimised for 320x240. I haven't checked it in a while though, so I don't know how well sound works...

Amazing coincidence - I was playing Civilization on UAE just last night too but then decided to play it on the real thing instead.
Yes, I actually bothered to setup my Amiga 1200!

I am really glad I did (as I'd been meaning to make sure it was all working still).

At first, when I flicked the switch, the bugger didn't start and I quickly remembered that it's mostly likely the Cobra 68030 accelerator in the trap door. I always had problems with getting it to sit "just right".

So I took it out and started it up - no problems! Booted up Civ AGA and was appalled at how fast it was not.
So I switched off and adjusted the Cobra - man that's tight fitting in there. They could not have made it *any* bigger. Pushed too far in and it wouldn't start. So I carefully pulled it out of the slot about 1mm. But I'm glad I did as the next time I turned it on - no problems!

Started Civ AGA again, nice! Except for the stupid intro which takes forever and seems to want to run through. Anyone know how to skip through this?

As for other versions of Civ - I've only played the PC and Amiga versions of the original Civ. Mostly the PC version. I'd still consider the PC version to be the definitive version.
I've also got the PS1 version of Civ 2 and it's really quite good. Optimized for joypad control therefore should work well with the GP2X.
If it runs on the PSX4GP2X emu it should be okay as mega-speed isn't really required for turn-based strategy games. Actually I might give that a try tonight!

The version for Playstation is Civilization II. Speed will be an issue with it as it is an issue when playing it on a real Playstation. It starts off okay but by the time you get to the 20th Century, every turn takes ages for the computer opponent to complete. It gets to the point where you can go off and make your dinner and eat it before it is your go again.

Played the ST version last night. Not too bad at all, and savestates work which is a huge bonus. Not sure why, but I'd still prefer to use the Amiga version if possible. With a bit of luck Critical will implement savestates in the not too distant future.

Does anyone know te score re writing to disk with the most up to date Emulator?

On searching the forums there seemed to be some suggestion that we might be able to play the PC version on Dosbox.

The intro on the Amiga is very annoying!

This is just weird, only last weekend I gave up on the GP2X with civ and went for my STE, took a while to get it going but I had a good old day right there... :)

Okay, so I ripped my copy of Civ II for Playstation and dropped it on my GP2X.
It starts, gets to the selection screen and then I get a blank black screen upon selecting "New Game". It seems like the game is still running but nothing on the screen. I can still hear sound effects and all that.

Oh no! Wait. I tried Civ 2 again with a lower overclock speed and it seems to be working fine now!
It plays okay at the beginning but most likely WhizzBang's advice will be sage for later parts of the game.

EDIT: I played it for a while - it seems to work quite well albeit slow FPS - but that doesn't really matter anyway. Personally I still prefer the original Civ's plan view than Civ 2's isometric view.

I've never played CIV on the GP2X because such a game needs a big screen and a mouse-like controlling is recommended to.
But for the Future I hope, that FreeCIV will be playable on the new Touchscreen Handheld and with 800x480 res (Civ in Widescreen! )

Jus wanted to say that, since the first post I've been addicted to Civ on Outcast. I don't feel you need a big screen or a mouse. It works very well. The virtual keyboard works very well indeed.

It's been a complete joy to play this on a handheld (although a touch screen and a keyboard would make it even better!)

Wish I could work out the disk writting thing for the Amiga version though.
