I also am disappointed. I was hopping for a better design. I hoped that the keyboard would be hidden (hopefully flip up or pull out. Guess ill stay away. Ill get the new iphone2

@atomicthumbs: Nice but there is still a few mistakes in the article. Well not in the article itself but the links and references. A few URLs don't seem to be right just yet. Also you need to mention that the render of the unit is just a mockup and not yet the final design.

lol, They're already thinking about deleting it. Someone should add some more info that isn't just the specs. Like the discussion history on here or something, and reasons for developing the system, as well as mentioning the GP2X.

I like it - I'm dreaming of playing all my old NES/SNES games from childhood, some PSX from college - and the keyboard/analog stick/touch pad just screams for some good ol' DOS games. The thought of carrying around old Sierra adventures, Ultima, and TSR Goldbox games sounds like heaven. Thanks for considering more than just console emulation!! I don't care what it looks like, I'm in for one!

omg I didn't even think about dosbox yet! Now that's cool. I was like: oh, the keyboard could be handy for amiga and c64 aswell as office and internet applications... why in hell did this not occur to me yet? LOL. Fuck yes, setting up a nice dosbox environment, playing some good ol' commander keen, and all the other apogee hits. Man, am I glad I didn't throw out my dos games collection.

Well, zodttd did say that he'd work on a dynarec'd Dosbox.

EDIT: also PLEASE HAVE A LINE IN! a mic port or something. PLEASE DO NOT ACTUALLY HAVE A MIC INSTALLED!!!
Why not both? I know that just having a microphone port would make that part completely useless for most people.

I would be pretty happy to see both an installed mic somewhere and an optional line in. I would want the line in so that I could hook up a say 50 - 100 dollar mic into it. maybe something even a bit nicer if it isnt overkill. the stock mic is likely to not be exactly all that great if they do decide to have one installed by defualt. I would just hope for a line in for people like me.

Well you do have your new Gizmondofloppieceofcrap for $99 to look forward to. You and the 5 other Jizdildo fanboiz can all sit around the campfire singing Coombaya and have a big circle jerk with them.

The rest of us will be playing with a REAL handheld.

By the way the renders are not final ;)
:lol:

I like the clamshell design. You have space for the various controls and a decent screen even though.
Maybe the only possibility to get pandoras hardware as little as it is.
Sliders make me thinking of my good old nokia 7650, always defect flexcables. Maybe a slider looks more technical but it is larger in any case.
... and the most successful handheld today is also a clamshell design. ;)
For me is important what is possible on screen. The case design of a handheld has to be only small and practical.

I for one am happy to see that these deisgns are not final as it looks super awkward to use.

I never cared for a keyboard, and it seems to be right in my face in these mock ups. I would love a way to just make it slide away so I can play games more conventionaly and comfortably.

Also, I am not a fan of the clamshell design. I really wanted to play some tatsujin and outzone on this beast but I guess that wont be happening now.

that dpad looks worse than the 1st gen 3 button genesis dpads. Glad to hear it's still being worked on.

I'm still really bummed about there being 2 analogs. What super important games NEED an analog, let alone 2 .But the people have spoken it seems.

But ya, overall it just looks way too crowded with junk. I'd appreciate something more minimalist, simple to use, and comfortable. (IE, not having my press my sweaty paws on top of the keyboard to use the dpad.)

I hope that people are able to think about what a proper and smartly designed system should be like, instead of just begging for feature after feature like a child writing a 10 page christmas list.

best of luck with all your work, and I pray that you guys make good progress.

peace,

King.

I'm not keen on the look and layout of the keyboard, but overall it seems fine.

I wasn't keen on the overall design to start with, but when you look at the DS Lite, its essentially the same, just replacing the bottom screen with 2 analogues and a keyboard.

Anyone know the physical dimensions of Pandora, how big it is compared to psp or ds?

Dude guys, I dont know why, but I'm digging the design :p
Normally, I would say it looks like a toy, kind of ugly, but then I imagined myself using it, and think this might work, although since I never held it, who knows. Anyways, would be great to have a cooler look, but cool might not be best to hold. Oh well, I hope for the best, since I'm interested in this beast. Anyone know if this would be able to play HD videos like h264? I figured I could use it as a way to put the HD animes that I got onto the TV :p might as well try to make it worth more.

I sense a change in thoughts. I was like so many of you, hated it at first but digging it now, especially as there will be a few modifications that we can still ask for. So yay!

The design is a bit of a shocker, but imo it is very good given that a keyboard had to be included (slide out design seems to me to be too prone to defects).

Maybe for people who don't like it the console should be easily moddable; internal cabling that can be easily detached and reattached (especially for keyboard) so that one can change the layout of the bottom half of the clam. (and back if one discovers that the original design wasn't so bad after all)

That's a really good idea. After all, this is a hacker's kind of device, isn't it?

Sometimes a cool color set makes the difference between boring and exciting. <_<
Maybe a changeable cover... or at least easy to remove for airbrushing. :rolleyes:
The layout of the device is practical. In my opinion no need to change general things.

I don't have the exact numbers, but it's larger than a DS lite, and smaller than the original DS.

I saw the Pandora through an article on engadget, and then discussed it on the Nokia Internettablettalk.com forums. Someone suggested I post here about my desire for one.

I just saw a black rendered version of the device on openpandora.org's main page.

If the device runs Maemo (Nokia's version of Linux), I will buy it.

The only other thing I might suggest is that, in order to separate the keyboard and gamepad surfaces, try a tri-fold design. To describe what I mean, add a third "flap" to the micro-laptop design.

You start with the closed device, similar in size to the current design. First you pull up the screen, and you've got the screen on the top flap, and opposite the screen is the gamepad surface (d-pad, 2 analogs, action buttons, etc.).

Then you fold the gamepad surface down, revealing the keyboard. This also supports an ergonomic feel for holding the device when typing, in that your thumbs don't like to be hyper-extended for lots of typing (the way they are on a slide-out keyboard, like the OQO, or on a micro-laptop). The thumbs are happiest when they're closer to parallel with your index finger, so the closer to that the better. Having the 3rd section allows you to hold that section against your palms, giving your thumbs a better angle for reaching the keyboard.

To give a basic/crappy ascii art illustration of how the trifold works out, here's an attempt at a side view:

=====1KKKKK2SSSSS
GGGGG1=====2=====

So, the 1s and 2s are the hinges, the Ses are the screen, the Ks are they keyboard, and the Gs are the gamepad. The =s are the component parts of the case (battery, curcuits, shell, etc.)

When closed, it would be like this:

=======
1SSSSSSS
1 GGGGGG=
= ======2
=KKKKKKK2
========

Fold the screen up:

=S
=S
=S
=S
=S
1 GGGGGG=
1 ======2
=KKKKKKK2
========

Fold the gamepad out:

=S
=S
=S
=S
=S
1
1
=KKKKKKK22=======
======== =GGGGGG

Sorry I can't make the representation any better.

But, even without a tri-fold, going with the current layout seen on openpandora.org, I'd still buy it (preferably in black, but white is ok). As long as it runs Maemo.

i thing This thread should probably be locked, and moved to the Pandora forum for historical interest. B)
