Knight Lore Update

wizard.gif

I have had a bit of a go at clearing up a couple of glitches :

The roving ball logic has been rewritten.
The chest and mine logic have been tweaked.
Added jingles to accompany the 'game won' and 'rating' displays.
The 'overall rating' descriptions now match the original game.
Squashed a couple of bugs( please report any more you find)
When you get all 14 'charms' the 'end sequence' now plays.

Download from EvilDragon's Lair

Or Equinox from SNES (Solstice 2nd part), or BATMAN (1986) or Head Over Heels from 8 bits machines, or Monster Max from GameBoy............ :D

Great games of course.

Great update. I used to love, still love, Ultimate games. Atic Atac was the first I played on my aunties speccy, I then got an amstrad cpc which I still have a soft spot for, shame we got speccy ports mostly as cpc had a much better palette.

It helps when you know the layout of the place. Here is a map.

I will see what I can do.

Never seen Knight Lore  ! What do you use these emulators for ?

Thanks for the feedback. This seems to occur when run from the GPH launcher. I use Ryo's menu and had forgotten about the built in one. I think I have found a fix. Look out for version 1.02.

I grew up with an Atari 2600 and a PCjr. What can I say?...

I have uploaded version 1.02 to the Evil one's archive. When he gets finished roasting babies with his fiery dragon breath I hope he will approve it.

This should solve Yod4z's black screen on exit problem.

Another (inevitable) bug fix - graphic glitch when colliding with stuff.

Volume control - use the volume rocker at any time to adjust volume. (You have to spell it out for some people). If you quit through the menu (i.e. don't just swith the GP2X off) the current sound settings are saved and reinstated next time you play. So if you turn the volume right down, next time you run it it will start silently. Useful if you don't want to disturb others.

WARNING
I have gone and broken Knight Lore. Must have dropped my crayon in the workings or something. Anyway, version 1.02 is knackered.

Sorry to those folks who downloaded that one. :( I think I can see my crayon lodged in between two bits down there in the murky workings. As soon as I can fish it out I will upload a fixed version ( 1.03 ).

This looks like an awesome, timeless classic. Lots of content, definitely will keep me occupied for a long time.

Did you do all the graphics? It looks very good. I loved the GBAX version, so I'll make sure to download 1.03 when it's ready :)

Your tower defense game is looking good. I have not given it the time it deserves because I knew I would get hooked and I still had to deal with this project. Hopefully 1.03 will be stable and I can start checking out all the great entries. I like your volume bar, by the way.

I have been surprised that so many people do not seem to have heard of Knight Lore. I guess you have to be over a certain age.

The graphics are based as closely as possible on the monochrome ZXSpectrum originals. They are just 20%(?) bigger and have been coloured in. I used 8-bit graphics to try and keep some of that 'old skool' atmosphere ( and because of a lack of artisic talent ). I also wanted to keep the amount of data low as I thought the overhead of the isometric view might strain the GP2X. As it is I have clocked it at 100mHz and that is more than necessary. If I had ruckage's drawing skills I would have a go at upgrading them to 16 bit.

Thank you for your comment. Good luck with the compo.

Awesome. Thank you for bringing back memories :) Somehow I had never enough patience to play it on original hardware or using emu. Do you have any plans to redone other oldschool games ? Whould be cool to see five week in paradise or exolon or Saboteur to name the few :)

Thank you Mr.Hando for your your excellent website here. Make sure you are not running version 1.02 as it is broken. The fixed version is now up on EvilDragon's archive. I am sure there were about 80 uploads last time I looked, but since the broken version 1.02 was posted it has shot up to 400 odd. That is a lot of crashing GP2X's. . Sorry chaps.

I have plans to sleep more at the moment  . No, I have not yet got round to considering what to do next. Was the Paradise game the follow up to Everyone's A Wally ? I missed out on that one, but I have the first one on tape somewhere. (R Tape Loading Error :) ) Emulator, here I come !

How about Batman or Head over Heels?

Cant wait to try this, looks brilliant.

Being an ex Speccy owner and someone who still loves to play Speccy games on an emulator this really does look very good. Knight Lore came out in 1984 on the Speccy and blew everyone away as its graphics at the time (in just 48k) were stunning and it was amazing how they managed to fit the game in that small memory.

Knight Lore was a funny game though, like Jet Set Willy it was a game which i never was going to ever complete but i just liked finding different rooms !

Alien 8 was the next release by the same company (Ultimate who then became RARE) and was much the same but still an excellent game. The 'Filmation' technique they created didnt surprise me when they did a few other similar games with it.

You cant get Knight Lore for the Speccy as its been denied so www.worldofspectrum.org doesnt host any Ultimate games but i'm sure if you look around you can find the original somewhere

Thank you for this game port digitaljez.
The kind of game that I used to love on my cpc, it reminds me Crafton & Xunk (a.k.a Get Dexter) a bit.. But, hopefully, never tried this one (fresh noob :) ).
I gave it a try yesterday (not so long) and I really enjoyed it.
Graphics are nice and I like the retro feeling that the colours gaves me.

Why RARE (or whoever owns it now) are so mean over something that has no further commercial value is a mystery. I have the Spectrum original but I aquired an emu-friendly copy with a quick google.

Someone on GP32Spain suggested that I was running a rom in a concealed emulator. Now you say it is a port. I am pleased people are finding it to be an accurate interpretation. I am glad you enjoy it.

Hey digitaljez, sorry for the offense ;)

I wrote "port" because the game already existed. Not that I suspected you to have ported this on 2x.
I even didn't know the original!

Your game is great! Very polished (nice gfx, nice gameplay) and a super retro feeling.

@Hando: +1 for Saboteur... would be awsome too!
I played it a bit on the Caprice Emu recently.
