Also, please show me a device with a high clocked ARM A8 Cortex. Nokia N800 has a 330MHz OMAP2420, which is ARM v6 (not v7 like the Cortex) and isn't really very high clocked at all. I'm interested in seeing specs for an ARM tablet device that could potentially emulate Nintendo DS.
Re. Design, Heh no it's just my Gimp (like Photoshop) modification of the n770 for what i wish for the N800 successor in 2008. It's not real :)

Re. N800, From the feedback i've gotten on the N800, it's too slow for straight unoptimized ports of stuff we want like SNES, UAE, DosBox. Also the 2420 can't handle 800x480 with its internal framebuffer controller, so N800 has a slow external one.

I don't expect we'll see any 3430 devices until 2008. Are there any other (simpler) Cortex A8 SOCs besides TI? With mplayer you don't need any of the video acceleration hardware.


There are other Cortex A8 implementations but they are quite lower end and probably more special purpose.

I still don't have all the details on the new instruction set but it looks amazing. I think ARMv7 is definitely the best instruction set on the market. It even combines in some of the few advantages modern MIPS has over ARM.

My only question would be: who pays the whole thing? Development, assembling.... everything...
Ok, In china you can easily and cheap manufacture everything today - in good quality. But at least some Money is needed at all.
And I don't know any sucsessful user-Hardware Project. Correct me if I'm wrong but there were many of these kind of Projects out there and I never heard something solid.
 
Exophase: I had an ARM Cortex demonstrated to me today at work, and even found a 36Mhz version suitable for throwing in almost any project and costing less than a cone of chips!

Somehow I think the ARM market is going to explode again, specially in the small microcontroller market.

I'd personally love to see a GP3X made by users, but it would have to be cheap to make, but I'm not sure how you would produce them. They would need to be mass produced, as I assume GP2Xs are. I suppose you could contract someone to make them, but that would cost quite a bit of money.

Sometimes user developed hardware projects do work, like PassMe, but that was on a smaller scale.

I've never used headphones with the gp2x, so speakers are a BIG point for me. The ones in the 2X are ample also. I like to hear whats going on around me whilst using the 2X, and I can't do that easily with headphones (plus the hassle of constant removal and refitting every time you move).

Hardware stuff is interesting and all, but what I really want out of my GP3X is some ace buttons. Nice deep face buttons that are responsive and feel good to hit and a top notch D-Pad or stick. I think nice buttons are why I keep coming back to my NGPC :)
 
The main problem I see with this thread is forgetting what the GP2X really is. Lots of talk of faster CPUs, higher resolution screens and all manner of different ports.

The simplicity of the GP2X is one of the things that attracted me to it. Also the 320 x 240 resolution, which is almost perfect for emulation purposes and as far as 2D games are concerned, easy for graphic development.

The only single thing I crave from the GP2X's successor is 11b/g wireless support so we could could build multiplayer games. That's about it. Oh, and a proper D-pad instead of the hybrid 'digital but feels analogue' crap. But that's it.
 
Yeah, there's something about the buttons on the xbox360/ps3 controllers that make them look and feel nice to press.
 
I personally like the psp style D-pad, its not the best but its simple and tough.
For the 3x it should be a bit bigger and a rubber grip should be added as your thumb tends to slip on the psp.
 
I've never run an emulator on the gp2x and am not interested in them myself, but if I were designing a "better gp2x" that I wanted to sell I would pick some realistic and specific set of systems I wanted emulators for, recruit the emulator porter dudes to help figure things out, and build it around making the perfect handheld for emulating those systems -- just enough CPU, screen, and controls to make it work smoothly.

I wouldn't buy it, but I think that's what a lot of people would like.

As for what I hope GPH does, I hope they pick a reasonable price/performance tradeoff from what's available in mid-late 2008, improve the joystick or replace it with a dpad, and port the gp2x firmware to it. Technology marches on, and whatever they pick will be a nice boost, making new things possible.
