Okay, I've done some recompiling. I set the sound down to 22050 instead of 44100 but without a rigorous testing method I couldn't detect much speed up. If any it may have been 1-2 FPS but when you are looking for speed ups I think sometimes you might find things which aren't really there.
As of right now this will break games that use higher frequencies than this. I could probably modify this, but it's kinda one of those "why bother" kind of scenarios. There are other things I can do to optimize sound, but I don't think that's where much is going in the way of resources. Could vary depending on the game though.

Right now the only thing that looks like a lead in the way of crashing is firmware version. I don't THINK anyone with firmware 2.1.1 has reported serious problems.

I use FW 2.1.1 and it crashes like hell...sometimes of course. Metroid Zero Mission like to crash at the start when I load a savestate, or it crashes randomly ingame when I was able to play hours before without every crash. It even crashed when nothing happend, I was studing a printed Map and dont touched the GP2X while Metroid was running, no enemy on screen, nothing happend and it crashed. Hmm.... And I think I have the right bios since some time.
One way to prevent crashing is to return to the menu every minute. Games don't crash when you are in the menu...dumb but useful ;)

Oh, Metroid: Zero Mission don't play the Original NES Metroid when finishing the game. When choosing this Option, the Emulator exits - without Crash this time. I think the Original GBA Game just use some kind of other rom + own emulator to play this game XD

And with the GP2X I really have trouble to do such moves like this here:

http://www.metroid2002.com/0/early_super_crateria_1.php

But maybe it's because of my lack of skill....

Well, I could finish the Game without this pro-skilled tricks in under 4 hours XD But only with an Item rate of 69% so I skipped the last boss and made a new travel back through all the maps and collect what I can reach. :) Here, with many practise and re-loading I could manage this move:

http://www.metroid2002.com/0/early_super_brinstar_1.php

and all with the GP2X standard-stick  The secret of Metroid are the sloopes, where you can recharge a "shinespark" and continue the "loaded" Status of Samus. Really, these Moves were not designed for GP2X Usage
But thanks to the great GPSP Emu, we can enjoy such finger-knoting stuff on GP2X to. :)

Just a lil update on my crashing problems, I've completed Advance Wars now, and moved onto Baldurs Gate:DA, and suddenly it all seems OK.. its crashed once in the last week.

This is still with FW2.0, all the same settings as previously.

One small glitch I've noticed though, is when you turn the sound off through GPSP, you still get the odd blip or squeek. obviously not major, but turning the volume down since the last upgrade takes about a zillion button presses. :) Did I read somewhere there was a way to set this back to as it was (ie; volume range of about 5 presses)?

I recently upgraded to 2.1.1 and have been experience freezes, about four of them.

I had only gotten one freeze(never in-game) with 2.0.0, since this version was released.

Like I mentioned before I have already suffered four freezes(in game) in one day with 2.1.1

All the settings are the same BTW.

This probably doesn't help, but I just thought I'd mention it :)

Thanks(for the third/fourth time :p) Exophase! This really is a great emu, I've been playing through Pokemon Emerald and I'm lovin' it :)

I found that deleting old game .cfg files generated from previous version of gpSP2X stopped freezes for me (could be a coincidence though, who knows). On another thread this seemed to help someone else too. Over clocking seems to be more sensitive also. I use 4 MHz less than I use on other emus.

@ Exophase: Just wondering what plans you had of another release of gpSP for the GP2X or PSP?
I'd like to keep working on it for as many platforms as I can, but other people keep stealing ports to random platforms, actually I've had two such occurences to ARM platforms now. Someone notified me that it was ported to a phone and the guy outright refuses to release the source.

I don't really know what I'm going to do.. doing gpSP for other people has always been my top priority but I really need any exposure I can get right now as well. Maybe I have to close the source, although at this point I doubt that'll really stop people, at least I can upstage "their" versions.

That's too bad man. I guess when the source is free, people think they can jack if they want. Do what you need to do; I hope it all works out.

Sorry to hear that people are being unfriendly about your source code. :(

I guess I was hoping you'd release an updated PSP version including findings and changes made whilst you developed the GP2X version. :D

Bad luck, Exophase... I suppose in one sense it's a tribute to the greatness of the emu, but it's also very very rude. Maybe you should make the source "available on request" instead? I mean, it's not as good as having the newest source up there for all to see, but it does mean you can screen people who want to port it a bit.

Of course, it also has the disadvantage that if you vanish (which amazing devs have an annoying tendency to do every so often - I'm thinking Vobbis here, but others too) the development either stops or has to take a very big step back to the last opened source, but hey.

Of course, you could always sue, but it strikes me that the less exposure to legal eyes GPsp goes through, the better, although I'm quite sure it's not escaped the attention of those at the top in any event...

I think you're talking about the oopsware release for Motorola Linux phones. He's a pretty well known character on the motorolafans board and has ported some great stuff. I doubt if he intentionally violated the GPL (maybe wanted to play with the source before releasing it?)
Anyway, he announces the source to be available in this thread.

That's right - as you can see from the post Phantom8 made, he was the one who asked for the source and oopsware directly refused, basically saying "don't bring up the GPL with me." I then asked him what was going on in an e-mail and only then did he release the source, but Phantom8 tells me that the source is for an older cell phone and might not be representative of the binary (he also said that in the thread). So I don't really know what's going on right now. But everything in Chinese makes it hard to tell :p

And, as far as I can tell that link to the source is all kinds of dead.

EDIT: Just doesn't work in Firefox.. bleh.

IMO, not only in China, it will happen all around the world. Once your product is famous and attractive. Many parties wanna to use it and release it to make mony. You can't control it. It like linux. Some company will use it and modified it and sell it without open source. It is against the law and no one is really challenge it.

I feel very sad for that guy. Not except gpSP, gp2xmame and picodrive from final burn is the same. I wrote a email to that guy to ask him to release all the source code too.

my humble advice would be to check in with him once in a while. and if he,s being obnoxious with handling your work tell us. and i (or we) will rant him into oblivion

any takers ?

DaveC are you with me on this one ? (lets politely rant him to death if he mistreats Gpsp) ;)

but if you want no such behavior from your community Exophase then just say so and we will silently watch as you take your own actions.

It's at this point that we need our friend from the XGP boards... from memory, he was one of the people who complained loudest prior to the GPH release of the source. And here, loud complaints might be useful!

I now playing Baldurs Gate GBA. besides a lot of crashes ( ;) ) there is a little but important ingame GFX bug: weared Items are not green highlighted so you can't see, what Item you are wearing and what item is just in the Inventory. Especially with rings, Amulets this drives you crazy and you really take care, what Item you want to sell... I wonder why these little green, transulent highlights not displayed with GPSP, I had no gfx- glitches in other games.

Blimey! I *thought* it was crap the way you couldn't distinguish the stuff you were wearing! I kept selling my pimp gear by mistake! I never even thought it could be the emulator!

Oh yeah, and no crashes at all for me on this game. strange. Is it the same problem, just random freezing?

Yupp, just the "normal" random freezes. But I save nearly every 30 Seconds (ingame and Emulator-stats) so it's not that big problem. :) But for the future it would be nice if Exophase can code the crashes in the way, only the emulator crash and not the whole Gp2X. Its Linux and not Windows there!
I have some good Equipment to but somehow the enemies are always tough. Next time I don't take a Close Combat Warior. And if someone can tell me if the various gems have a function ore just for selling?

Saving so often must be a real drag though! Its strange that now I don't experience the crashes, since changing games... this problem is really infuriating?

So, to recap...

I'm on FW2.0, using modified ram timings, clocked to 240ish, and sound is set to 8k. and you?

I'm playing as a wizard, I'm a little way into act 2 at the moment, and am finding it a bit annoying that the enemies are usually the same speed as me, so its difficult to outrun them and cast.. end up usually finding the end of the area they are allowed to cover and keep luring them there, then firing until they run away, and repeat.. I'm sure when I played it on my xbox I never had this trouble! Still, I'm quite enjoying it.

gems-- good question! I thought they'd be for refining weapons or something, but am yet to find anyone that will do it. I'll google it. :)

edit: looks like you just sell em.
