As my collection expands I have begun to search for some of the older gaming/computer systems such as the speccy, atari models, magnavox odyssey, and of course the Amiga! I read about how much everyone loved their Amiga on an almost daily basis, so I figured there would be no better place to ask some questions.

Obviously I plan on buying from ebay as that's one of only a couple choices I have. I was wondering what's a good model to buy? What will I need (harddrive? Size? hookups?)? Anything else that I'll need to get in on the action?

Also, what are some of the best Amiga games? I really mean *best*, as in must have at any cost

And any other advice anyone has.

Many thanks! :)

if you get a 1200 with a cd drive

for games These may not be "must haves" but In my opinion worth looking up.
try getting breathless for a fps (or gloom if power is restricted)

Vallhalla trillogy (vulcanology) for adventures

forpoint and click im gonna say

6th sence investigations or big red adventure as these are rare to find and are pretty good (no where near BASS)

for puzzles im gonna say pushover.

Others not so great include:
lotus trilogy
rick dangerous 1 and 2
DOOM (everything has doom)
Pinball dreams/fantasies
Hoyle card games

A 500 is good for the older games. A 1200 is needed for the later AGA games and runs most(but not all) of the older games.

If you want a full box for hard drives and what not you'll need a 2000 or 4000 respectively, but you'd be surprised how high a good Amiga tower still gets on eBay.

If you go the 500 route, make sure you have at least 1MB of RAM and a "fatter agnus". This can also be called ECS(Enhanced Chip Set). If you go the 1200 route, none of that applies. And in both cases, a second floppy drive can't hurt.

Phew. :)

An A500 is easy to track down, a serial null modem cable is usefull so you can tranfer adf images to real amiga disks from your PC.

An A1200 is great with an 030 accelerator and some extra ram but could be costly in the US.

My suggestion is to get yourself a copy of winuae and test some of the games out first. Then if you are interested get an A500. If you dont like floppy disks and you are still keen get an A1200 with an Accelerator.

I have 7 A2000s at the moment and am in the process of giving some away but sending them to the US would be murder, besides I dont think the power supply would work over there.

I currently have:

6 A500
7 A2000
3 A4000
1 1200 blizzard 1230 mkIV 030@50mHz with SCSI module and 96meg ram and 6gig HDD + DVD Rom
1 A600
1 CDTV
1 CD32
2 A1000

Let me know if you need a hand setting up winuae.

amiga 500 plus memory expansion is the classic and all the games you love will run on it, forget the rest, you will only have compatibility problems.

My favorites were:

Cannon Fodder
Gods

Wizkid.

Seriously, get Wizkid.

Take a trip to Lemon Amiga a sister site to the excellent Lemon 64 site.

Not as comprehensive as the 64 site but they still have a fair few reviews etc.

EDIT: Added another site

TweakGuides Guide to Amiga Emulation Page 5 contains some nice links to many ex Commercial Legal Amiga game downloads.

With the aid of Amiga disk imaging software you can turn these disk images back into Amiga disks for running on real hardware.

B.T.T.R R.I.P :(

Syndicate, The Amiga version was the best.
Ruff and tumble
Putty Squad
Alien Breed tower assault
Parasol Stars
Slam tilt
Hired Guns
Soccer kid
Pinball Dreams
Seek and destroy

Trooper

You will love the Amiga, I have 3: An A500, and 2 A1200s. I call them my 3 Amiga's .

Klown-o-mania - Weird isometric view clown fun collecting diamonds.
Cadaver - A deep Isometric view adventure.
Risky woods - Nice platformer, difficult though.
Alien breed 1 and 2 - Top down alien blast fest.
Addams Family - Platform adventure, great visuals and music.
Amigas - It's a cool breakout game.
Krypton Egg - The best breakout game you will ever play.
Cannon Fodder - Top down shooter with cute little men. VERY ADICTIVE.
Chaos Engine - Top down shooter, amazing graphics and audio from the Bitmap Bros.
Atomix - Nice puzzler, with atoms.
Datastorm - A truly amazing Defender style game.
Goblins 2 and 3 - Amusing adventure puzzle. Very funny.
Gods - Truly awesome side scrolling platform adventure. It's amazing!

New Zealand Story - Side scrolling platformer with Tiki the fluffy kiwi!
Populous 1 and 2 - The original God games. A must have.
Powerdrome - Fly around futuristic 3D race tracks. It's hard though.
Pinball Dreams - The first truly playable pinball game on a computer. VERY GOOD.
Pinball Fantasies - The second pinball game, even better than Pinball Dreams.
Pushover - Fun puzzler, like dominos but some of them explode LOL.
Secret of Monkey Island 1 and 2 - Need I even tell you about these 2 amazing adventures?
Silkworm - Horizontal Shooter. Amazing graphics, Awesome audio, mega game play.
Simulcra - Interesting 3D space game.
Speedball 2 - futuristic American football.
Stardust - Truly amazing, it's asteroids, but the graphics and music has to be seen to be believed.
Starglider 2 - WOW, this is very atmospheric. 3D fly around space and visit planets. Better than Elite!
Stunt Car Racer - Race around tracks that have jumps and ramps.
Virus - 3D shooter, very original control of the craft. Difficult until you get the hang of it.
Vroomm - Weee, a race game only very fast!
Wicked - Amazing arcade shooter. Very unique, you play against evil, and it's quite horrible.
Wizball - Brilliant side scroller, you can even play it 2 players.

All of them I have in my collection, and are truly superb games.

Really heavy and really big and Australia uses 240volt power supplies. Besides that I have no spare keyboards. :(

You could track down a nice 500 for much less in the states.

Yes FluffyUk,

Simulcra is indeed a great game.
I thought is was the only one that liked the game.
You should try moonfall. It also has this sci-fy atmosphere.

Forget all of the games everyone else has said. They are all lying. The best games (by far) are Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade - The Graphic Adventure and Indiana Jones And The Fate Of Atlantis - The Graphic Adventure.

Edit: Apart from..
Secret of Monkey Island 1 and 2 - Need I even tell you about these 2 amazing adventures?

Moonfall, Oohh not heard of that one, I will give it a go.

There was another game that I can't quite remember the name of, it basically took place in a 3D computer world, and also on a blue print style map. You had to work out on the map what you had to do, open doors etc, and then fly around the 3D word to fire at the relevant switches, then when you had done that, your little robot thingy would trundle along the blue print maze, through the paths and corridors hopefully to the exit :). Anyone remember the game?
