Cheap Laptops

How cheap is cheap? The lower-end MacBooks are pretty reasonably priced, and system76 are selling some at ok prices if you're looking for one to run Linux on. I don't know of any places with good prices in Europe though.

A laptop is something that you will start to depend on, and use more and more as time passes. I bought a very cheap laptop and now half of me regrets that. If you will use it a lot, then it's definitely worth it to save money and purchase a quality, reliable product that will accommodate to anything you may want to throw at it for the next few years.

I got a compaq presario laptop had it for 3 years not 1 hardware problem. Ive used 3 dell laptops (around £980 new) all hardware failed within 4 months (1 hard drive 2 battery faults).

My advice is to ask someone who knows what you want from a laptop and see if they can find you a good deal.

The Sony VAIO laptops (to me any way) have always had a good balance between form & functionality.
They look great & 9 times out of 10 do what you buy a laptop for, but for goodness sake don't even think about buying one if you want to run Linux.
Way too much hassle :(

It will be if he buys one from me ;)

EDIT: Just to make this post a little more usefull, What country you in Nova & Windows, Linux or one of the other operating systems?
What operating system you want to run is a big factor in choosing these days :)

I personally wouldn't recommend a Vaio. I would describe my experience with mine as "sub-par" at best. Next time I buy a laptop I'm going to spend the extra money on a decent Mac, I think. As Alex says, you start to depend on your lappy and the Mac experience is a good one, much better than the Sony one IMO.

might as well wait until those hybrid drives come out get a descent laptop then.

If your really strapped for cash you could try

olpc with its fedora O/s and 1gb shared memory and AMD CPU :D

 nice :D the ram upgradeability alone makes it a worthy laptop. not sure on the speed as I havent had AMD for a LONG time (amd k6-2 :p ) im assuming its its 2.8ghz which is more than adequate.

Cant really see you finding a better deal than that.

I actually quite like this. Ignoring the smallish screen, is it any good?

My bro brought one to college and it hasn't broke yet, so it can't be dreadful :)

i just got a hp nx6325 for 500 euros, they should be the same in dollars in the us.

it has a 15 inch xga display, a mobile sempron 3500+ (25W TDP), 512mb ddr ram, an ati x1150 integrated gfx card (i can play halo on this baby so its not that bad!, roughly the performance of a geforce 3 ti 200), 60 gig hdd, 4,5 hours of battery life with wlan activated and browsing.

this thing rocks. its ultra silent too. nice job hp! build quality is excellent btw.
