I sold my gp2x a while ago and i'm already starting to miss playing all the old retro games on a handheld. The only problem I had with it was the joystick, it just annoyed me so much. I guess im one of those people who prefers a d-pad. Anyway I was just wondering if there is a new model coming out with a d-pad or any future handhelds on the way that might be a good buy for a retro gamer like myself.

Cheers

:)

You are no longer welcome here for you are GP2X-less :p lol j/k, Not sure there will be another GP2X with D-Pad because a majority of the users (im guessing) are satisfied with the Joystick, if anything it will have more multimedia functionality built in (USB hub etc).

I haven't met anyone, yet, who is satisfied with the joystick. It seems to be the main problem when trying to persuade (informed) people to buy the GP2X, too. It needs to be replaced by a d-pad.

I'm fine with the joystick. Could be better, of course, but I'm happy enough. Most people that complain seem to like shooter-em-ups, which I do not. Probably depends on what you play.

Anyway, if you hate the stick so much, wait for the XGP or XGP mini. Couldn't tell you how long that wait will be though...

I have a problem with the joystick. Beat em ups and shmups are the worst affected, but every game suffers from that stick. Diagonals are the worst. A d-pad is just so much better for all of the games you can play on the GP2X. I wouldn't sell mine, as it's a great little machine and I have a lot of fun with it, however I would love it so much more if it wasn't for that frustrating stick!

I love shmups and have no problem with the joystick. i have some problems in fighting games but those are problems I would have on any joystick and even sometimes on dpad cause some moves are just hard to pull off. as long as you aren't using that horrible stock cap that came pre mk2 I really don't see why people could say that the stick controls horribly.

actually i think the stick with the mk2 cap controls shmups exceptionally well. I've done very well in the kenta cho game that was ported with the stick.

I enjoy shoot'em ups and fighting games and have no problem with the joystick. I don't even think about it. I can pick up my DS and switch to my GP2X without a thought.

I think it just takes time to get used to the joystick, I seem to be getting to grips with it a lot better now. The main problem I find with the controls that the A,B,X,Y buttons seem too close together but then I guess they didn't have much space to play with. Having said that I knew about these issues before I bought it.

:p I have a GP2X with a DaveC joypad mod. Its bloody sweet! I couldn't be happier.... sorry I didn't mean to rub salt in the wounds :)

Well, at least it's better than a d-pad. I generally prefer joysticks over d-pads. The stick of the GP2X is not of the best one, but with an alternative cap it's at least ok.

Take the stick of the GP32 for example. I never ever saw anyone complaining about it except because of the noises it made. It was really good for about every game out there which you can't say regarding a d-pad.

The joystick annoys me at times, it tends to go to the right or left sometimes when I press up or down. It seems like you really have to get it exactly right(not all the time) when pressing up or down.

It varies from game to game, though nothing big enough to warrant me selling it.

I still kiss it goodnight every night before I go to sleep :p

Man, there's no way I'd sell the gp2x. even if all the developers dropped off the planet or shifted to psp-only, i'm perfectly happy with the state the vast majority of the emulators run at.

The only game that's frustrating with the current stick is Sensible Soccer. Too bad :(
