Does Anyone Develop For Gp32 Anymore Or All Gp2x?

2 years ago I bought a GP32 and loved it.
Everyone was developing games, software, emulators and such.
It now seams to all have died.
Must I buy a GP2X in order to get updates?
Seams like a shame. Everything is always updating.
Who's to say that as soon as I purchase a GP2X, another version won't follow (like XGP rumors) and all development for GP2X will die.

I'm pretty sure MAME gp32 still gets pretty regular updates, but, yes, most development for the system has stopped. The system is no longer manufactured or supported by Gamepark. There are a lot of GP2X owners (supposedly more than GP32 ever had..); support won't just immediately dry up when the XGP systems are released (and there's no date whatsoever as to when those will even be released).

Just look at what GP2X does better than GP32 (which is quite a lot), and decide if it's worth it. If your happy with what your GP32 does right now, it might not be worth upgrading.

I'm still working on gp32 and I don't plan to buy a gp2x, but I'm not sure I'll release something complete (soon).
I think you should upgrade to the gp2x to get new (and better) stuff.

It's the nature of things. People like new stuff (new handheld game consoles) as much as the like old stuff (retro gaming and emulation).

The GP32 has had it's day, though I think people will continue to use them. A lot of the software is already pretty mature - most systems that can be emulated already are emulated - so where can you go?

The answer is you need more capable hardware to tackle more complicated emulators - the GP2X is just that.

Personally, I don't think the XGP is ideally suited to emulation whereas the GP32 was. An improved version of the GP32 would really be emulator developers dream platform.

I'd like to see a 400Mhz, 128MB RAM, SD card version of the GP32; this would do the job nicely. :D

There will be 2 GP32 games from teams where i am involved:

Crystal Babes (Puzzle Game) - Probably commercial
Giana's Return [Final] (Jump'n'Run Game) - 100% Freeware

Unfortunatly there is no release date yet, count with march 2007 or later.

There is another third title (Devname: May 69), but unfortunatly the project has been thrown back by copyright issues. We need to get a new theme-idea before we can continue work on this piece of software. The game might get commercial, tho we planed to have it released as Freeware first.

Hi Kojote! :)

Glad to hear you're still going forward with Giana's Return! :)
I second the idea for a 400MHz / 128MB RAM GP32. From what I've seen and heard the GP32 was very well built.

This discussion reminds me of when I moved from the Tapwave Zodiac over to the GP2X. The Tapwave Zodiac was a great product and was built well. This happens often with handhelds.

I don't know where people get this idea. GP32 had a lot of issues. The stick would become unresponsive, and many people had to mod them to make them function even reasonably well again (and then some of these mods ended up cracking the plastic casing). Triggers were notoriously unresponsive; I had to open mine up and bend the prong to get it to work (and that issue existed from the factory). The buttons were fine--though I prefer the soft buttons of the GP2X.

I hear the BLU+ did address some of these issues, but it also presented new ones...

WHAT?
honestly, the buttons were the greatest buttons I ever had on a handheld, the only two problems it had for me were the limited number of buttons, and tiny + rare memory (SMC cards :( )
The GP32 is a jewel, I will never sell mine, and it will always beat the GP2X in some issues like battery life using normal non rechargable batteries, the short start up time and the sexy white color ;)
Don't get me wrong, but although I enjoy my GP2X and use it on daily bases, but am in love with my BLU gp32_console

I myself own the BLU+ and never had any issues.
I play it everyday. The only reason I may buy GP2X is for the 2 extra buttons so I can really get into SNES emulation.... I unfortunelty can't just buy it. So if anyone is looking to buy a GP32 BLU+ with 3 commercial games, I'm your guy. (Wish some distrubuters took trade-ins).

My other request is.... Role Playing Game Development.
I'm addicted to playing role playing games (Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, Faxanadu, Zelda, etc).
Is there anyone out there developing a role playing for GP32 or GP2X (not a port or emulator existing). Something fresh, colorful, sounds, and not just scolling left/right, EXP build up, Weapon/Armor buildup, spells?
I know there are a ton of dedicated Role Players out there who've been waiting for such a game.

i've got a FLU unit and it is fan-bloody-tastic. especially the great clicky arcadey joystick. (why oh why didn't the gp2x get one like this :( ) the only poor part of it for me is the screen, which I didn't protect very well and is now smudged and scratched to f*ck.

admitedly I don't use it much these days, but that's cos I'm continually trying out all the new gp2x releases, and I'm a sucker for novelty-value ;)

I was writing this a couple of months ago but got distracted by something shiny and never got round to finishing it off. It is playable but lacks any sound or other refinements.

It is 80 puzzles from the Binary Arts Rushour® puzzle thingy.

Would you mind uploading it to the Archive? It would be more publicly accessible there.

There's a guy on here by the name of GP2X Future Coder working on a game called Salvaria or something to that effect. It's an RPG. There's also someone working on what looked like a hack-and-slash style RPG called Legends of Idhuriel but I don't know if it's going to get an English translation or not since the programmer is Spanish, IIRC.

Edit: These are for the GP2X. I don't know of anything for the GP32.

Could authors who use SDL not just build a GP32 version ?

Did most people sell their GP32's when they got a GP2X ? If so where are all the new GP32 users ? The scene has gone so quiet it must not seem worthwhile to dev's to put effort into producing stuff if nobody is going to use it.

If there are a bunch of GP32ers still out there they should let it be known and give devs the incentive to keep making GP32 versions.

Well there must be some GP32 users out there, though it is decreasing.
When I set up the new GP32 MAME webpage, I put a hits counter on it. Since I took on the code from Franxis earlier this year, I've had ~12,300 hits on the page. Of course there have been 4 versions out since then and it tends to get large increase in activity with each new release.

The disturbing trend is that the number of downloads has decreased substantially; v2.1 2600 times, v2.2 1600 times and v2.3 600 times. All this seems to indicate to me that people are leaving the GP32 "scene" very quickly.

I personally think that the GP32 still has a bit of mojo left in it, but I doubt that anyone is going to try and find it. One last killer app for it would be nice.

I have... something... like that planned/brainstormed. But there's no EXP, Weapon/Armor buildup, or spells. And the party size is as much characters as you currently have. And the fighting is literally fighting.

I want help on this, because I want to program something like this while I have time in my life, and leave a good, original, and innovative game, that is free, open source, and portable via SDL. I made my details cryptic and hard to decipher on purpose, so nobody can steal my idea; because literally, I can honestly say it will be the most different game ever created.

However it might be too much for the GP32. I desire it on the GP2X, but otherwise it's open for anyone to use.
