When oh when is Rlyeh going to release fmame to us?

I thought the contest was over 10/1.

I'm losing sleep over this...

:p

relax man, the contest ended but they are taking about 1/2 month to vote (slowwww I know) and then I guess they're initially going to release the emu's at the spanish meetup, and THEN distribute over the net. that sounds unfair + like a long time, I know, but realize this...

rlyeh (fMame coder) also entered his fGB emu into the competition, and as soon as he felt it was release-worthy then he gave it to the masses. I am guessing it's a similar situation with his other emu's - from what's been said aound here about fMame, it's probably not in a hugely playable form yet (slow, low compatibility) and therefore it's best to wait until he is apparently giving more attention to it, I'd say.

I don't wish to spread any rumors about the state of things, I am of course just putting 2+2 together here, none of this is official information -- just my take on things. Anyway given the guy's track record (+ mountain of work,) I'd say it's wise to be patient and hope for the best. I sure don't want to see a shitty "tech-demo-status" painfully unplayable emu just for proof it can be done, I'd rather wait longer + see something enjoyable.. you know?

Will this emulator be able to play Metal slug??

or is metal slug a game that will never be seen on the GP32 (appart from the neogeo pocket version)

I'm a newb to MAME, so what games are available for mame? Is it all arcade games? What is the file format for the roms?

mame stands for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator.
(sorry if u knew that already.)

i think it emulates (nearly) all old arcade machines.
could post a rom-list but it would be toooo long.
can email u, if u want.

i'm not sure about the roms.
some are *.bin or *.10. others are *.a12. and some just *[.nothing].
maybe some experts can tell u some details.

MAME emulates about 1500 unique games and several thousand clones. Basically the program is the windows of emulation: it's multi-purpose, every single game kind of loads on top of everything else (ie it's sort of like a core program, and the mamedev team submit drivers to add games to it, so it's cluttered), and consequently, it's also the least optimized emulator.

It basically emulates all old games excluding the ones with discreet circuitry/no roms to dump and/or cpu to emulate (for example, pong and monaco GP). It emulates most not-so old games, except the ones with protection that isn't cracked (most of it is though - CPS2 was encrypted, Konami-GX was encrypted, both are in MAME now). Basically what it does not emulate very well is stuff you'd still find in an arcade - almost anything 3D or high level 2D. So no DDR (although something, possibly MAME, supports beatmania because I've seen screenshots of it being emulated!), no Daytona, no Tekken (although I'd say tekken is not far off). What it does emulate that's newer is NeoGeo stuff, several taiwanese games and a few oddities like Point Blank.

Games like Metal Slug (any version) use a lot of memory in any emulator. Even if the GP32 could load them (which it couldn't cos' I think the smallest one is about 13 meg zipped?), MAME would be the absolute worst emulator to use for this. It's unoptimized like hell. A GP32 would choke. To put it in perspective, I have an old P166 MMX laptop with about 8mb RAM. If I run NeoGeo on MAME on that, it'll take several minutes to load. Hell, even if I load an old game like Gradius, it's choppy as hell!

MAME is practically impossible to get working decently on GP32, but I'm not going to say it's impossible. Someone just has to optimize the hell out of it...ultimately though, I think the short term answer is single game (or single hardware) arcade emulators. Anyone who was around before MAME will remember how awesome those can be...

Several hundred of the oldest games (abour pre-1985 or so) should be able to run at decent speeds.

The Zodiac may be a better platform for MAME. The 200Mhz CPU, 128MB RAM and ATI graphic chip may be enough to run many more games. My wifes old PC (200Mhz Cyrix CPU + Win98) handles about any MAME game I try on it.

Everything Gurty said plus:

Mame emulates 4150 games in total. 2359 Original games and 1791 clones. The oldest known game it plays is Gun Fight from 1975. It will also play games released last year. But due to moral reasons these games are disabled in all official builds of the program.

Also disabled is Pong (may have been removed now). This didn't stay in because it wasn't a true emulation of the game. Emulation of Pong is impossible on digital hardware.

Offshoots of Mame include MESS (a multiple computer emulator using Mame's CPU database), PinMAME (for pinball games) and the various arcade specific versions of Mame for CPS, NeoGeo and other hardware.

Hoping Metal Slug is going to play through Mame on a GP32 is a bit of a dream as it requires frameskipping on my Athlon with far more horsepower than a GP32 can provide.

More info at www.mame.net .

hrhr gun fight... played it yesterday against my friend :)
do you think multiplayer mame ist possible?

remember ryleh is working on fmame .. ryleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhh~ :) he will bring us full snes emulation and good mame emulation ;) ryleh is da best he can do everything go ryleh yay!
