Cnet Review

... and if you're feeling geekish, you can make your own games and apps with the System Development Kit (SDK) included in the package.

... I got a bag of candy. :p

They merely said it looks like, not it was based on.

We can pick this review apart all day, they haven't got the device yet, they're just going on what they currently have, which isn't much.

AND IT LOOKS NOTHING LIKE A BLOODY PSP!

Awesome,
More Press = More units = More potential homebrew devs = Even more cool Emu's and homebrew = Even more units shipped = More interest in commercial games production = Me pirating cool games for my handheld .

It seems almost to simple .

Protx GP2X  Wonder where they got that idea <_<
Although to be fair Protx have previously released some open source stuff.....clients' credit card number and pins for starters

Other things aside, it does look sufficiently similar to a PSP that a lot of people assume that's what it is at first glance. I think it's because they're both black really, though. Usually if I can hear them asking one another if it *is* a PSP or not, though, I can expect a question along those lines in a minute or so. At which point, I don the preacher's hat and boot up DrMD :).

Yes, despite the huge difference between the two systems, my friends call it a PSP ripoff (except one who like to play Llamatron).

Heck, if the white one was released, people would say "Yeah, that is SUCH a ripoff of an iPod", because most of the general population are ignorant.

This is exactly right. Stupid people who dont research into what their buying and blow money on something high profile like a psp or an ipod soon realize that what they bought was either crappy or highly over priced. So to cover up their stupidity they just call everything a ripoff of whatever they purchased.

But its ok becuase I can just slap anyone who calls my gp2x a psp ripoff. :D

It supports DivX, WMV and AC3 movies, but Protx claims its internal 64MB of NAND memory helps it play any movie at any resolution without the need to re-encode them
I like this sentence the best.

I wasn't aware we had WMV and AC3 support yet  .

Also, I know I've gotten the whole "second processor and separate video processor" roles confused before, but saying that "64MB of NAND memory" is what allows the GP2X to play videos at any resolution is a little absurd coming from a website that regularly reviews tech gadgets.

How stupid must the executives be to let this "journalist" keep his job? He must have read PlayAsia's website (or some other retailer), thought "I want a new toy to play with", and ordered one while doing no other research whatsoever. I wouldn't be surprised if the full review said something like . . .

I opened the package to find a console that looks a little different from the picture; there is this little red tab by the screen that is distracting, and it gets knocked around to the point where I am afraid it will rip off.

Then, I wanted to watch a movie. I put the files, from a DVD I have, on my SD card (not all of them would fit on my card though), but I couldn't find the movie when I selected "video" from the menu.

So, I thought I must be able to play some games. But, it didn't come with any kind of demo game card, and I couldn't find out where to buy some. I even selected "game" from the menu, but I couldn't find any.

I can't believe Protx released this handheld that doesn't do anything. I now have a rather expensive paperweight paid for by the advertisements on this website. So, please click on an advertisement so I can keep my job.

Wow, that was an awful preview from cnet, and its not geekish if you want to play classic games and create some. If that were the case then are the devolpers down at EA are geeks, rockstar? No.

I'm sorry but that is a very geekish statement.

CNet is pretty far from being the authority on tech reviews, although they're usually not that bad. They definitely confused the 64 MB of Main memory with the 64 MB of NAND storage, the codecs are just what are publicized as working but not anything they've tested, clearly. They're still going on 'claimed' 4 hour battery life (which is about the average, 4-6 hours with a taxing application.)

This review is VERY preliminary and it says they'll be releasing a more complete one later. So I won't fault them for this.

I hope they wait until after May, when all the pretty new upgrades are out. That way, it'll be a bit more ready for the "ignorant masses."

I second that only a true geek would see the subtle shades of geekdom
