New Xgp Pictures

Could be interesting - looks like a nifty little unit, and the extra power & 3D support would be great.

HOWEVER, unless they have drastically changed their stance on homebrew (which is yet to be seen), it is more or less worthless to me - if I wanted a handheld with good 3D support for commercial games I'd get a PSP. If they actually release a handheld with a decent amount of power & hardware (FPU, GPU, good amount of ram & raw processing power) that supports homebrew, then I might just have to look into it.

If it lacks even basic homebrew support, I'll stick with my 2x, thanks. If they've changed their minds on that issue, could be worth considering.

While on the subject of the mini I think it's odd how they are releasing 2 handhelds at once. The reason the big N has two is because the smaller weaker one is the earlier handheld, Nintendo didn't make them at once. I know everyone on this forum knows that, but I don't think GP does. They should release their big one, then 2 or 3 years down the road they can shrink that one and release a new handheld, then they'd have two. The SP is still selling along side the DS, Nintendo has both the high end and budget markets covered, but did this only over time.

Oh, and everyone seems to assumes that expensive handhelds=no homebrew, or it can't or is impossible. Wouldn't everyone pay an extra $100 for the GP2X if it had 3D capabilities? I know I would. I hope in 2 years GPH ups the GP2X's processor power and shrinks it, at the same time releasing a new faster 3D GPU handheld, making that the more expensive one and keeping the shrunk GP2X the same price for those who don't want to spend the extra for more features.

Releasing 2 handhelds at once is a mistake though, or at least I think it is.

Thanx,
Stan

I agree, as obviously one will get more attention that the other. Although if they do keep their new view on Homebrew, and the coders get behind it, I daresay I'll get one.

Edit: Just out of interest, joining late I dont know this, how long was the lifespan of the GP32, before they split etc?

Ok back to the topic at hand. I'm not liking this XGP. too expensive, two different units (huge mistake) they expect to have Quake 3 on it by May and they haven't even decided on hardware? Probably very little (if any) homebrew support. This console is supposed to compete with the PSP (unlike the GP2X which is for Homebrew). It sure looks sexy though, and i still can't wait to see what they have to offer at e3.

At least they will BE at e3. To bad GPH doesn't have the dosh to go too :( I wonder where GP gets all of the money from? They seem to be much more flush than poor old GPH. Yeah the XGP looks cool. We will see though, CGI glamour shots always look great. Remember how slick the GP2X looked in pics like that? Then it came out and.. Well it is not bad really but not quite as slick in those renders. I like the GP2X better from what I see here. It isn't cost I can afford the XGPs too, I just like the whole balance of the GP2X right now.

Drugs most likely is where they got their money.

DeLorean Park?

I don't think we are assuming that it won't have homebrew. It will probably have it. Even if it doesn't support it it will be cracked anyway. It is just that it really doesn't offer much more than what we have now with the GP2X. A widescreen doesn't give us anything better for emulators in fact it is worse (see previous page). The analog stick also doesn't give us anything for emus either again it is worse. The only type of homebrew that would be better are 3D homebrew games.

Would I pay $100 more for 3D? No. That is what the PSP is for. The XGP is like a PSP without the games so I don't know what they are targeting it for. Do they think they will take the 3D game market from Nintendo and Sony? If so they are dreaming. What I would have paid $100 more for would be a GP2X with extra RAM for the second core to make emulation better.

Thats what ive been trying to say this whole time :) well, i dont know what the xgp is going to have up its sleeve, but it sure has got to be alot otherwise it is going to sink and not be even remembered. Maybe as the most UNSUCCESSFUL console in the world... but nothing more, especially if it is challenging the psp.

With the xgp mini, i feel that its almost like something you woould get in a happy meal. Albeit, a £100 happy meal. hapy meal toys when i was a kid were prety meaningless, you wanted to get one, but after about a week or so, something better caught your eye.

Im sticking with the gp2x, at least its something unique compared to whats out now :)

Oh, I didn't make my post clear, sorry. I don't think the XGP will be homebrew, what I'm saying is if the GPH made an open handheld that had a 3D GPU wouldn't you pay extra for it? 100 was just a figure I made up, not sure how much more it would cost.

It just seems that most home-brewers think that home-brew handhelds have to be dirt cheap. It's kinda like saying people that like home-brew games are cheap, or really poor, which I don't think is true. Most people that own the GP2X also own SPs, DSs, PSPs, and pay for games because we have money. I see a lot of posts like 'it's going to cost a lot more than the GP2X so I won't buy it' or '250-300 is way too much for me'. My question is if it was open and cost 250-300 would it be worth it or is that just too much for a handheld? I think it would be and hope in the future GPH goes for more power even if it means a higher price. That's why I said in the future they should shrink the GP2X and give it more power while keeping it at $180 for those who don't want to pay more and make their next handheld more expensive with 3D capabilities. This is more or less what Nintendo does, and I think it's a really good idea to have a cheap handheld and a better more expensive one.

Stan

Does look very nice and 3D is always good in my book as long as they don't expect people to pay extra for it, Lets be honest 3D on a handheld is really as useful as wearing a back pack to power a handheld for 40 hours, It's niche and not that useful but if it comes down to a choice between the GP2X and XGP and they both perform similar for 2D but the XGP has 3D for the same price i would guess most people will go XGP.

I'm discounting the homebrew arguement here because at this point we know nothing really at all about the XGP except what you have been told by people who are gaining from sales of the GP2X, Are they really gonna be unbiased ?

Can you explain exactly how different? Its got wide screen, got 3d, aimed at psp market, its got similar features... pretty much the only difference is the media format is uses and the company who makes it.

I just think its going to dive thats all, my opinion only. I also think this topic should be moved to an XGP ONLY spot. But thats my opinion. No need to like just be blunt, unless that is your opinion of course! I just want to know how drastically different the psp is to the xgp?
The DS vs the PSP, two drastically different consoles altogether. The GP2X VS the PSP, they are again drastically different, all except the media and mp3 functionality. An XGP vs the PSP, there isnt really much difference at all! just like saturn vs playstation in 1995. Same diff, different console type.

I still wanna buy the XGP mini just so I can have a blatant Gameboy Micro ripoff.

But come on, it has a slightly bigger screen and media functionality for only $50 more..
